We are searching for candidates for a 1-year research assistant position for a project on social behavior of anubis baboons in the Laikipia district of Kenya. The project focuses on a well-habituated population that has been studied for several decades. The research assistant will be responsible for conducting focal observations of adult females and males, collecting and processing fecal samples for analyses of hormones and DNA, and monitoring growth and development using photographic techniques.
Prior field work experience is preferred, but not required. Successful applicants should be able and willing to collect detailed behavioral data, hike over rocky terrain at about 7000 feet elevation, and be in good physical condition. The research assistant will collaborate with other project staff and researchers, so congenial temperament, ability to work well as part of a team, and reliability are very important.
Although there is no salary, costs of food, lodging, local medical insurance, and in-country transport to field site will be covered by the project. Applicants will be expected to pay for their own airfare to Kenya, but the costs of economy fare (roundtrip) will be reimbursed after a successful period of at least 8 months in the field. Candidates are expected to have their own health insurance in the US or home country.
Term: 1 year, beginning September 20 2013
To apply: Please email a current CV, names and contact information for 3 references, and a letter describing your interest and qualifications for the position to Dr. Joan Silk, jbs...@asu.edu.
