Position Description:
The Lilongwe Wildlife Centre (LWC) is the only wildlife rescue, conservation and education centre in Malawi. We have about 200 animals at our centre including primates, antelopes, carnivores, reptiles and birds. Almost every week new animals are coming in, mainly coming from illegal trade. Whenever possible and suitable we endeavor to release those animals back into the wild again. To accomplish this, we follow as close as possible the guidelines provided by the IUCN. For more information about the centre and our activities please visit our web-site: www.lilongwewildlife.org
The LWC is planning to release two serval cats back into the wild. Both animals became a victim of illegal trade and were taken in to the centre at the age of four weeks. The animals were reared in a big natural enclosure, and at the age of almost one year they are old enough to be released. The animals will be released according to the soft release strategy. Place of release will be Kasungu NP.
For this study we are looking for somebody who wants and is capable of collecting data while the animals are in their release enclosure as well as post-release. The post-release study will focus on collecting data on spatial movement, activity patterns and hunting behaviour. To be able to collect data the animals will be provided with GPS collars.
During this study you will be guided by Dr. Emma Stone (Conservation Research Africa).
