We are seeking an enthusiastic and hard-working field assistant to work with lekking hermit hummingbirds at La Selva Biological Station, Costa Rica. The study is part of a broader project on the social function of visual and vocal displays in long-billed hermits (Phaethornis longirostris) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lBEekrX4cP8; http://www.earthtimes.org/nature/hummingbird-tunes/2453/ ). The position entails at least one month of work during Mar-May 2014. The primary role will be to assist on mist-netting/banding of lekking males as well as obtaining recording of acoustic signals. The assistant will gain experience in banding techniques for hummingbirds and field experience in tropical biology and behavioral research. Work will begin at 5:00 am and end between 2 and 4 pm, six days/week. The assistant will be part of a 3 person field crew and will also have the opportunity to participate in further stages of research including data analysis and interpretation. The assistant is expected to cover housing expenses+station fees ($~750 a month total). Food will be provided.
