Weird non response to syntax

Hi folks,

I have miniconda on my MacBook (Apple M1, Big Sur), and it seems to run Python from the terminal, but I can not get it to recognize basic syntax (It will add numerals, but nor upgrade or install modules). Not sure what is missing, but can anyone give a clue as to where to investigate? Thank you.
