Please join us, on Tuesday 11/19 at 4:20pm in SCCE E110, for a talk part of the Data Science Initiative speaker series.
Speakers:
Sarah Walden McGowan (Head of Digital Initiatives & Web Services)
Chelsea Wells (Digital Stewardship Librarian)
Title: "Migrating Emily Dickinson: Data Science in the Library"
Abstract:
Members of the Digital Initiatives & Web Services team at the Frost Library will provide an overview of a recent software migration project to transition Amherst College Digital Collections (ACDC), the library’s digital archive, to a new platform.
In this presentation, we will explore how digital preservation extends beyond simple file storage to ensure long-term access and usability of digital materials in an ever-evolving technological landscape. We’ll walk through the migration process, including metadata cleanup, vendor collaboration, and strategies to maintain data integrity and leverage linked open data. We will also share the rationale behind our move to a new system and how this shift supports more effective data management, sharing, and safeguarding of our digital assets.
Additionally, we will provide practical tips on research data management and digital preservation, offering faculty, students, and researchers tools and strategies to strengthen their own data practices. Ultimately, this case study highlights how libraries are evolving in the digital age to protect and preserve our cultural heritage for future generations.
Light fancy refreshments will be served before the talk.
