Hi All,
Please join us on Tuesday, 2/10 at 4 pm in SCCE A131, for a talk part of the Data Science Initiative speaker series.
Speaker: Prof. Mia de Los Reyes (Astro)
Title: Small Galaxies, Big Data
Abstract: Extragalactic astronomy is entering its big data era! Telescope surveys are mapping the sky with greater detail and depth than ever before: for example, the Rubin Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) will image the sky every three days for the next decade, obtaining over 20 TB of data per night. This will revolutionize, among other fields, the study of low-mass "dwarf" galaxies (10-100 times less massive than our Milky Way). LSST will observe hundreds of thousands of dwarf galaxies—orders of magnitude more than we have ever been able to see before. Identifying and characterizing these dwarf galaxies, particularly in such large datasets, is a major ongoing data challenge that my collaborators and I (and many other astronomers) are now trying to address.
Light fancy refreshments will be served before the talk.
Feel free to spread the word to faculty, staff, and students.
