Hi All,
Please join us, on Tuesday 3/11 at 4:30pm in SCCE E110, for a talk part of the Data Science Initiative speaker series.
Speaker: Prof. Vigil, (American Studies and Education Studies), and Eleanor Stolzoff '27
Title: Digital Dakhodia: Interventions in Indigenous Language & History
Abstract: As an interdisciplinary scholar whose work centers around questions related to cultural history, Professor Vigil will talk about her work with the rare archival newspaper "Iapi Oaye" and translators from the Dakota Oyate (Nation). This Dakota Language project is engaged in digitizing images of original 19th-century documents to make this moment in Dakota and U.S. history more widely available. Translations of the newspaper provide new access to its contents, at an especially intense time of struggle for Dakota people, given the persistence of settler colonial structures. In addition to the website, this work has led Professor Vigil to new work in Book history concerning the intertwined technologies used by Dakota people, such as wowapi waniyetu (or "winter books") and the printing press, to preserve their history, language, and culture.
Light fancy refreshments will be served before the talk.
