Libarian’s Guide to Homeless Live Trainings/Webinars

When: May 14, 2026, 2 p.m. ET

Registration Link: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/1216469293934/WN_NvsyC8l_TB63r6yP_vX3Xw#/registration

Topics Covered: The Science of Conflict (For Libraries)

  • How your actions change the brain of someone you talk to.
  • How trauma and traumatic brain injury can change the brain's response to conflict
  • The three stages of conflict — and why you’re probably worried about the wrong stage

NEW CONTENT and support materials: The new “Conflict Prevention & De-Escalation” trainings will be shorter (30 minutes), but still full of practical tools that staff can use immediately.

The biggest change is that there will be three versions, modified for where you work:

  1. Conflict Prevention & De-Escalation School
  2. Conflict Prevention & De-Escalation School for libraries
  3. Conflict Prevention & De-Escalation School for homeless service providers and nonprofits

What else is new:

  • Facilitator’s guide for group discussions and role play
  • Spanish captions will be available on Niche Academy.
  • Training will be grouped into 3 series — Core, Intermediate, and Advanced — and numbered so you always know where to start

To access The Librarian’s Guide to Homelessness core training on Niche Academy, go to the State Library of Ohio’s Training and Professional Development page and click the homelessness training link.  Once in Niche Academy, you will be prompted to login or create an account. Certificates will be issued within Niche Academy after the completion of the core training or webinar.  The Librarian’s Guide to Homelessness core training purchased by the State Library in 2019 and has been renewed through August 2026. The online training, authored by Ryan Dowd, is available for all Ohio public and academic library staff.  The four-part training is an empathy-driven approach that provides best practices for library staff on how to understand the homeless population and serve them better. There are also practical tips on how to deal with and de-escalate common situations and issues, and make staff feel empowered and safe.  Archived webinars are available as separate modules in Niche Academy.

If you have trouble accessing the training or upcoming webinar, email Erin Kelsey, Library Consultant at the State Library of Ohio at: eke...@library.ohio.gov.
