How can we center our learning goals as we make decisions about AI in our classrooms? And how can we communicate our thinking transparently for our students?

Given the disruptive aspects that generative AI presents for student learning, deciding whether and how to permit the use of generative AI or integrating it into our teaching can be highly fraught, depending on our individual perspectives and experience levels.  This can lead us to avoid thinking about the issue, have visceral reactions when AI is discussed, or make all-or-nothing decisions about its role in our classrooms. This workshop will introduce a structure to reflect on and brainstorm about the learning goals and expectations you have for your students and how generative AI might sometimes augment and other times hinder students’ progress toward those goals.
