Hi list,

Is there a simple way I can tell if my echovision glasses are  connected and working with my iphone.

I mean is there something I can do or say to my glasses  to know this without opening apps on the iphone itself?

Thanks,

Yeah, on the home tab there will be a glasses info card with information about your glasses . The first line has your glasses name and status.

Ok, I'll bite;

What home tab?
Is this on the glasses or the phone.

Remember my question was asking about some way of knowing if the glasses were connected and working with the glasses, without checking the iphone.

Could be the glasses are on my head while the phone is in my backpack or another room?

Sometimes, my questions are real groaners.

And, should my glasses remain connected after I restart my phone.

Thanks,

Hi,

There is no way to tell if the glasses are connected to your phone without the app. The good news is that you really don’t need them to be for most things. They only need the app to connect to a new wi-fi network or change glasses settings. In all other cases, a connection to wi-fi is all that’s needed for them to function. You can check the battery status and wi-fi connection with a triple press of the power/camera button.

If you do not open the app, you can tell by turning on the glasses with the power button, and then tapping the button on the top of the right arm once for a scene description. It will either give you a scene description in which case you will know you are connected, or it will say no network available, which means they are not connected. Or if you have your phone playing some kind of media, and you turn on the glasses, your sound might go to the speakers in the glasses. And the home tab refers to one of the tabs on the bottom of the screen in the EchoVision app. Not sure if that is the answer you are looking to receive.
And as to whether they always stay connected, my own experience says yes mostly but not always.
Thank you,
Lisa

Many thanks to Brooks and Brannan for their prompt responses.
I am connected; when I did a single tap on the right button the scene in front of me was describedin detail and colour.

and we are go agiga, go!

So far, that's the only feature I've been able to get working, except that as I understand it you are supposed to be able to ask questions, haven't gotten that to work yet. Probably because there are no clear instructions.

Jean, not sure if you noticed that when you open the app, there is a "Guide" tab at the bottom right.
This includes the user's guide and it states:
AI/Action button
Press once: Q&A mode, EchoVision listens for a question or performs a scene description
This seems fairly clear to me and while I received my glasses on Saturday, I only had time to set them up yesterday and so far the above works as described.
One thing which I would find an improvement would be to have the touchpad on the right side, but obviously I understand that it's probably too late for such a change although now that several hundred Pioneers have the glasses or will son have them, I'd be curious if Agiga did a survey whether the touch pad should be on the left or right arm, what the majority response would be.

Best regards,
Sieghard

I would also like it on the right arm. My left hand is never free considering I am a guide dog user.

Hello Hailie, I also have a guide dog and hadn't even thought of that yet. You can reach around in front of your face to tap or swipe with your right hand, but it's definitely a bit more awkward. Of course then there are all the many white cane users who probably argue the opposite if they are right handed and use their cane in the right hand.

Getting a scene description is clear, what isn't is that you are supposed to be able to ask questions. I thought I said that in my message.

I'm just the opposite, my right hand is always taken with my mobility cane so I would have preferred the AI control and touch pad on the left and the power/camera button on the right. Not a big deal, I can adapt.

Monty, I think your question is valid, Buddy's solution to press the power/camera button 3 times is certainly one way, the other way would be to ask something or start live AI which won't work if they were not connected.
There are also two connections here, the one to your iPhone if you paired them via Bluetooth which is not required if you don't want the glasses to also act as a headset and the Wi-Fi connection.
As far as rebooting your iPhone, go right ahead, it certainly won't disconnect the glasses from your home Wi-Fi since while you use the app on your iPhone to establish the initial connection, once it's done then it's done and your iPhone could be powered off and the glasses will still work just the same.

I would actually prefer separate volume up and down buttons and that the power/camera button also accept single and double taps instead of the touch pad, I find that frequently when I put my finger on it to do something like change the volume level, it sees a tap and mutes something or does something else that is triggered by a single or double tap. It's annoying and frustrating.

Jean, I'm not sure why it's unclear to you, for me when it says "EchoVision listens for a question or performs a scene description", then that seems pretty straight forward.

There are actually two bluetooth connections, one is for control of the glasses, it will have BLE in its name. The other is for using your glasses as a headset. Since the glasses' primary functions are through WiFi you don't need the app to be running on your phone to use them. The only times you absolutely have to have your phone near by to use your glasses is when you are away from home and have to use your phone's hotspot.

The power button does support single, double and triple press as well as press and hold for 5 seconds. Again from the user's manual:
Power/camera button
• Hold 5 seconds to power on or off
• Press once to take a photo
• Press twice to start video recording, again to stop
• Hold 30 seconds to force a restart

And, as I listed the functions I realized that Buddy's tip to press the power/camera button 3 times to hear battery level and Wi-fi status is not listed in the user's guide, hopefully this can be corrected in the next update.

You would think so, but so far I have never been able to get it to answer any questions put to it. Like my microphones are permanently muted. So I figure that the instruction must be missing something because I'm doing something wrong even though I am following the provided instructions.

I unfortunately can't help you there, I tried just a few minutes ago by pressing the AI button and asking specific questions about the scene description it gave me in our living room and it worked for me. For example, part of the scene description was that there were two pictures on the wall and that there was a large cabinet with a TV and various decorative items. I asked "describe he left picture" and it did so correctly. I asked to tell me about some of the items on the cabinet and it listed a snow globe (correct), a soundbar in front of the TV (correct) and a globe and deer figurine on top of the shelf, also correct.

Oh really? That is nice to know because the only way I knew to get a report on the battery would also send logs to Agiga. I'll have to try that the next time I use the glasses. Something else I'd like to see them document is the wearer detection feature, so far there isn't anything about it anywhere.

And just like Agiga there is no description of how you did that, so for me it is useless information.

Hi everyone,

My dad has been working with his glasses for a few days (mine are coming soon) and he got disconnected from the wifi while we was using the glasses and couldn't get them to reconnect.

We tried to reconnect (I'm 2 states away) and still didn't help. I haven't checked in today to see if he was able to get them back online. Anyone else experience this or have any suggestions?

Things have been going fairly well for him the past few days up to this point. I'm looking forward to getting my pair!

Thanks,
Tammy

I did this exactly as I described "by pressing the AI button and asking specific questions about the scene description it gave me in our living room".
In this case I pressed the AI button and after a couple of seconds it gave me the scene description. I then pressed the AI button again and asked "describe the picture on the left" and after that was done I pressed the AI button again and asked "tell me more about the items in the cabinet.

OH, so it is listening for the second or so before it takes a picture and if it hears you it grabs your question instead of taking a picture, is that it? I thought that there was something missing because how would it know you wanted to ask a question versus wanting a scene described. I really don't like these multi function controls that change their behavior based on what you do or don't do. They can be very confusing.

A good example is the problems I have with the touch pad. It frequently reads my swipes as taps, so instead of getting a volume change, I get muted output or microphones. And unmuting them turns out to be a challenge. I usually end up turning off the glasses, then turning them back on to unmute them..

This very same problem was one of the reasons why I returned the Envision Ally Solos glasses.
