I took the risk initially of inviting Alex Vitale to speak, hoping other Ethical Societies would chip in and help pay a fee.  Some Societies, when this was going to be a smaller venture, offered to chip in.  I asked our speaker about a fee, and he did not name one at all.  RYSEC decided we can absorb the additional cost of Zoom for the month.

So I recently took the risk of inviting two professional musicians, who are artists-in-residence at our Brooklyn Society, to do 3 pieces of music for our program Sunday: DuPree, accompanied by Barry Kornhauser.  Some of you have heard DuPree at an Assembly before.  It seemed like just the right music for this topic.

We need to be fair in paying them for this work, including their practice and performance time.  I am coming back to ask that you contribute to this effort, as you would have had our speaker asked for a fee.

We are likely to be 200 or more in attendance Sunday.  Some coming will be new visitors, coming for the content and speaker, not knowing who we are. The quality of the overall program will be enhanced and our message of Ethical Culture/Ethical Humanism embodied in the work of the music as well as our careful attention to the message in words.

Please let me know what your Society can contribute.  Their usual fee for such work for Ethical Societies is a break on what they would be paid in other circumstances, and it's simple fairness to pay them for this work.  Not all Societies have much of a budget for this, and some will contribute towards other national programs later, so if you’re able to contribute, please do. RYSEC is increasing their Zoom costs for the month in order to accommodate the size of the room, and will contribute something towards the music as well, but we are not in a position to subsidize the whole cost, as we are among those Societies facing significant financial consequences of the pandemic. Which is why we’d love to have support in a mutual effort.  Individual contributions to the program costs are of course also welcome.

Send checks to RYSEC, 4450 Fieldston Road, Riverdale, NY 10471.  Or pay at our PayPal page if that works better for you, rysec.org/giving.    Mark the check or payment for “11/15 Platform Costs” and we’ll be able to account for it correctly.  Also, please let me know how much you sent, if possible, so I can make sure that we’re accounting for the funds correctly.

Thanks so much for your mutual support for this program.  I am hopeful RYSEC will be able to return this mutual support with some future shared platform meetings.

Act to elicit the best in others, and thereby in yourself.

Hi Jone - Can we get a sense of scale on the need for contributions?  I don't know whether to put you on our million dollar contribution list or a lower list.   Thanks

Richard

Hi everyone,
So normally NYSEC pays outside speakers $200.00 as a modest honorarium and we have never had anyone ask for more or decline on the basis of that. But, we tell them up front when we invite them. Some speakers even forego the honorarium and ask us to keep it or donate it.  I'm sure we can contribute $200.00 towards Sunday's expenses.   Monica

How can I be removed from this list?

Jone, I do not understand your comment, are you looking for $300 from each participating society? or the total amount RYSAC is in debt for is $300, of which each society can contribute to?

We are raising a total of $300, and each Society can contribute.  I would not have arranged something and expected $300 per Society!!!

So we can contribute up to $200.   Let us know what's needed depending upon what others
commit to.   👍 monica
