The American Ethical Union calls its members and Societies to participate in the national “Secular Week of Action,” April 29 - May 8.  The 2022 theme is: Action for the Unhoused.  Held annually before and after “The National Day of Prayer,” the Secular Week of Action highlights human approaches to human problems.

Participation by Ethical Culture Societies will demonstrate to the broader American community that non-theistic congregations care for and serve their communities.  Registering your event will also show other non-theists where they can volunteer and serve during this week.

AEU members and Societies are called to join the Secular Week of Action as Societies (or as individuals, if there is no Society action planned for this period).

Action Needed:

  • Register any ethical actions scheduled for this time period at WeekOfAction.org.

    • Actions do not have to be “on theme” to be registered.

    • Actions may also be held on dates near the specified week to be included.

    • Individuals may plan personal actions and register them.

  • If your Society does not have an action planned for this period, consider planning one, OR review what you are already doing (“share the plate,” “book discussion,” etc.) and identify the ethical action in what you are doing.  Then register the action at WeekOfAction.org.

The emphasis on registering the event is an important component of the Secular Week of Action.  By registering your event–no matter how small–you will be listed in the national database of events that week.  People seeking an event to join will be able to find your event and participate in it with you.  By registering your event, you will add to the impact of the national event as an expression of caring and service from the secular community.

Secular Week of Action is a joint action performed by the member organizations of the Secular Coalition for America, of which AEU is a founding member.  Foundation Beyond Belief is hosting the event this year and has developed additional resources, which you can find at WeekOfAction.org.

Other Actions:

  • Like The Secular Week Of Action Facebook Page - they’ll be posting project ideas, memes, and other fun stuff you can share to let your friends know about Week of Action.

  • Share The Week Of Action Website - Help raise the visibility of the secular community and the work we are all doing to make positive change.

  • Post Pictures - Whether you’re participating in a virtual group activity or as an individual, find creative ways to photograph your servicework and share online to inspire others

  • Go Live - Live stream on YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, or other platforms. Are you working on a creative project? Interact with your audience while you work. Take suggestions from viewers as you go, or auction off creative choices! Make sure to talk about your activity regularly in advance so people know to tune in.

  • Network With Other Groups - Like, follow, and share the posts of other volunteer groups across the country to support one another’s work!

  • Use The Hashtags

    • #SecularAction

    • #Action4Unhoused

    • #WeekOfAction

Please feel free to ask questions about this project and to share your projects here as well--but, did I mention that you should register your project at Week of Action.org?
