Some of you may know this already but I have an update on the issue that's come up where the host cannot unmute people.  It's actually a little more complicated, apparently, the restriction only applies if the host has previously muted them, which is, of course, exactly what we do at the start of meetings.  Looks like this "feature" came with Zoom 5.0.3

In Zoom 5.2 it's made explicit in the participant's screen because the option now says, "Ask to Unmute"

There's a lot of discussion on this on the web

This new "ask to unmute" is annoying -- and after reflection, I get why they're doing it.  If someone mutes themselves because they want to have a private conversation, or they may have noise going that might be embarrassing, it only makes sense that the person who's muted should consent to being unmuted.

I can't help but think of the person who, unfamiliar with technology, took the phone into the bathroom without turning off video or sound.  Fortunately, those hosting saw and hear what was happening and quickly muted and turned the video off.   Yes, actual occurrence during a meeting recently.

James Croft explained (below, highlighted) why the new unmute behavior is actually OK.  Better than OK, as a matter of fact

When the host requests that someone unmute themselves that person receives a high priority pop up asking if they would like to unmute. If they can read and click yes, they know how to unmute - it’s easier even than regular unmuting!

It’s a very good feature. It makes it so the user is in control of when they are unmuted, which is exactly what you want for privacy and security. It just means that presenters have to be on top of things and know when they are meant to speak.   Yeah, that's the idea, to make the user control whether they are unmuted.  But it's difficult when you have people in the audience who don't know how to unmute themselves.

What I find very odd is that this apparently only applies when the host has muted  you to begin with!   I don't understand that at all.  And I just did notice in a Platform that there were still some people who I could unmute - maybe theym are ones who came in late and were not explicitely muted by me, I don't know.
