DADL WG AGENDA:

Featured Topic: Multiple Access to Supplemental Learning Objects(MASLO) - Dr. Rovy Brannon & Ms. Cathrin Weiss

Description:
The Mobile Access to Supplementary Learning Objects (MASLO) is an open source mobile learning publishing system. The Academic Advanced Distributed Learning Co-Lab in Madison, Wisconsin is developing MASLO under an ADL Broad Agency Announcement. MASLO allows non-technical authors to easily create basic training content packages that can be deployed to mobile phones. These packets are downloaded into a native mobile phone (Android or iOS) application. Once downloaded by a learner, the packs can be run without an active internet connection. MASLO consists of three components:

1) A lightweight mobile learning content authoring tool built to run on Mac, Windows, and Linux computers
2) A cloud storage mechanism (the pilot is using Amazon S3)
3) Applications for Google Android and Apple iOS players

In this session, the presenters will describe the MASLO system, its current status, future development plans, and how agencies can download the open source code for their own deployment.

Bios:

Rovy Branon has led learning technology research and development as the executive director of the Academic Advanced Distributed Learning Co-Lab at the University of Wisconsin-Extension since 2007. In 2009, he accepted an appointment as associate dean for online learning. He is also an adjunct online faculty member for Indiana University-Bloomington, where he teaches instructional technology. He has more than 19 years of instructional media and learning technology development experience in corporate, higher education, and not-for-profit settings.

Cathrin Weiss received her B.S. and M.S. degrees in computer science from Saarland University, Germany in 2007. After that she joined the Dynamic and Distributed Information Systems group at the University of Zurich in Switzerland as a research assistant, where she conducted research on database technologies for the Semantic Web. Cathrin spent two years as a systems programmer working for the Condor Project at UW-Madison, before she joined the Academic ADL Co-Lab at the University of Wisconsin-Extension in 2011 as the lead software developer for the MASLO project.
