DADL WG AGENDA:

Featured The RUSSEL Project (Dr. Robby Robson)

Description:
The goal of the RUSSEL project is to remove barriers to effectively
sharing, using, reusing, and repurposing existing digital learning
assets. With this in mind, the project is developing an “out-of-the-
box” open source digital repository that DoD organizations can deploy.
This repository will include support for SCORM packages, paradata, DoD-
specific metadata, taxonomies of learning objectives, and Communities
of Practice. The repository is being built using Alfresco as a base
technology with a significantly re-imaged user interface and added
functionality. It is designed for integration with other systems via
web services.

The RUSSEL project is also building a prototype tool for designing
online lessons using existing content. The tool, which has been
characterized as a “remixing” tool, helps users learn and apply best
practices for instructional design and reuse. The output - is a SCORM
package that includes resources, design and development notes and is
intended to be handed off to programmers and content developers. The
tool will be integrated into the repository and is intended to
encourage the reuse of content.

We will give an overview of RUSSEL, show demos and screen designs, and
solicit input and feedback.

Bio:

Dr. Robby Robson began developing web-based learning content and
learning management systems in 1995 and chaired the IEEE Learning
Technology Standards Committee from 2000 – 2008. He has led several
Department of Defense projects that explored the use of emerging
technologies for training and has contributed extensively to SCORM. He
has also been active in the National STEM Distributed Learning (NSDL)
initiative funded by the National Science Foundation, where his work
includes contributions to the theory and practice of reusable design
and to technology for educational digital libraries. His most recent
work is in applications of semantic technology and natural language
processing to training, intelligent tutoring systems, and competency
risk management. Dr. Robson co-founded Eduworks in 2001 where he has
guided research, services and product development. He holds a
doctorate in mathematics from Stanford University and has held posts
in both academia and industry.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The objective of the DoD Advanced Distributed Learning (DADL) Working
Group (WG) is to facilitate collaboration among all stakeholders that
are involved with the content development, instructional systems
design, technical implementation or related support of any distributed
learning environment for the DoD. The purpose of the working group is
to allow the ADL team to brief you on new developments and provide a
forum for DoD ADL stakeholders to share lessons learned, best
practices, and solicit questions to the other group members and ADL
team.
