The webpage of Loadstone is down:
http://www.loadstoneinc.com/

It seems to be down since over a year:
http://groups.google.com/groups?q=loadstoneinc.com&scoring=d

-

Usenet implies that there was a transition of Fortress from Loadstone
to GrafX:
"
[...]
The latest mail from Loadstone was that they (loadstone) didn't
support the
product (fortress) anymore (to make it compatible to VO2.5b3)
[...]
"
http://groups.google.com/groups?threadm=ab9539%241uga%241%40news.versatel.net

But nothing on the GrafX-site mentions something about a transition of
the product rights to GrafX. Loadstone is still referenced:
http://www.grafxsoft.com/fortress.htm

-

David Kuechler is the author of Fortress.

David Kuechler *is* Loadstone.

Loadstone (www.loadstoneinc.com) is out of business.

Thus David Kuechler is out of business.

There is rumor about David Kuechlers death [1], but no denials /
confirmations can be found via internet researches.

Howerver, this would explain, why Fortress is not 'up-to-date' with
its functionality.

This would explain (at least partly) the delays in VO2.7 developement,
too, as David Kuechler is listed as the main VO-Core-Developers [1].

[remark: writing and maintaining a CS-Database is a fulltime-job.
Writing and maintaining a Language-Core is a fulltime-job, too]

-

Due to the absence of the main Author (David Kuechler), it is not
advisable to use Fortress, cause further developement, maintenance and
support is not guaranteed.

Existing VO-applications which use Fortress can be migrated to e.g.
Advantage Database Server (ADS) from ExtendedSystems Inc., a company
which is definitely in-business and has a mature product [2].

Another benefit of ADS is the availability for different
Client-Systems [3]. This increases independency from VO, as
application-data can be simply accessed from other languages.

This increases independency from GrafX, too, as ADS simplifies the
migration from a VO application to another developement-tool. This is
maybe the main reason why GrafX is not crediting the effort of an
independend vendor (ExtendedSystems).

How? Simply: with the inclusion of his free product (free ADS Local
Server and ADS 2 seat developer licence) as an 3rd-party-product on
the VOx.x CD.

Ilias,

Except for some rough comments and some especulation, I agree with you. I've
tried the Fortress version that comes with VO 2.6 and have found it
practically unusable. On the other hand, ADS is a good - and well
supported - product.

Marcos,

Interesting comment. Perhaps you should try and find out then why some
people do use it and use it quite successfully. Perhaps you didn't ask
enough questions in the NG? You are as bad as Bilious Ilias if you don't
explain your criticism, especially when its provably inaccurate.

Geoff,

snip[ Interesting comment. ]
Accurate comment.

snip[ why some people do use it and use it quite successfully ]
To a fixed path on a local server fine.. but quite frankly VO as it is
works fine the same way.

Again you put somebody down who has a valid comments which are have never
been addressed from previous discussions on this matter.
I will ask you again.... tell me and everybody else how to run Fortress
across a TCP/IP address so you can run a VO application remotely. ?

Lets see if this time somebody can show exactly how to do this?

Without this ability the product is Useless for serious work.

Just want to clarify a comment that I made re the word UNUSABLE..

It is very USABLE on a local network with appropriate pathing.
I did all my tests on this and it worked fine... I had it running in 2
hours.

My point is more about running a system from and to a remote IP,.. where you
login in and have appropriate security.
The pathing from this aspect is anonymous and the connection should
establish alone the pathing.
In this way I think Fortress needs some more work done to meet my
requirements.

However each persons needs are different and you should assess the product
on its merit.

friendly words.

remember: "Without this ability the product is Useless for serious
work."

-

TCP/IP in conjunction with CS-Databases implies "remote IP".

otherwise the "TCP/IP" becomes only a marketing-thing.

-

anyway, all this discussion is off-topic.

The main fact is, that Loadstone/ David Kuechler is out of business.

I'm flattered <g>. Just two comments:
1) Coming from Geoff, I don't mind... <g>
2) I think that Ilias has some valid points in his (hers?) critics.
However, he (she?) could be say a little more friendly.

Regarding Fortress, IMO a product is usable when it has a solid user
base, plus support, KB, tips & tricks, upgrades, patches, etc. I
provide this services to my customers.

Thanks again for the kind words,

Marcos

<g>. ... and was in humour anyway. Hence the term "Bilious Ilias" The first
word means "sick" and rhymes nicely with the second.

When? But its definitely a 'him' - I've seen his uni pictures and of his
travels around various IT trade shows. It seems that his involvement in
similar forums has also been as disruptive and as unwelcome. In my books
that makes him unemployable because he isn't able to learn and incapable of
interacting sensibly with his peers.

If this were the case alone, how come any of us are using VO <g>. No, I
think the only criteria is that it works. And work it does. I won't go into
Phil's complaints regarding internet usage because I wouldn't have thought
that its primary focus anyway and DBF's over the internet????

There's a problem in using ADS for VO:

[ADS] - Extended Systems Inc. does not care about VO!
