There is a pro-war rally in St Paul at the MN state capitol
tomorrow(1200-1400 if your in town).
It has to be held on Saturday, as those likely to attend have jobs and must
work during the week when the anti-American/pro-oppression/pro-Saddam
rallies take place.
I think I might ride down there, as I expect it to be well attended, and
parking will be at a premium.

Voicing your support for the war is your right as an American.
Calling someone anti-American simply because they express the opposite
opinion also does not make this a better country.

No, we don't need their oil. No way....... nope, our bikes don't need no
stinking oil.

But, the bike tires need a cup or two.

The polar-tech, lycra, et all we wear might need a few drops.

Damn, the bike shoes have rubber soles.

Oh shit......... look at all this plastic!!!

Fuck..... the road is asphalt.

Yikes, my bike lock has a plastic cover. And the gears don't stick cause I
use Pedro's OIL.

HELP........... OIL IS EVERYWHERE........ OIL OIL OIL ......... ARAB
OIL........ AMERICAN OIL .......

THERE IS ONLY ONE THING TO DO..................

LETS KILL ALL THE WHALES AND MELT THEM INTO OIL............

BUT THEN THERE WON'T BE ANY WHALES, AND DOLPHINS, AND SEA WORLD, AND DISNEY
WILL THEN BUILD PLASTIC ONES........... AND THAT WOULD REALLY SUCK........

I GIVE UP.......... LETS INVADE IRAQ AND TAKE ALL THE OIL AND KILL EVERYONE
AND THEN WE CAN WATCH IT ON TV.

I mistakenly used the term "Anti-American" to describe the protests; More
accurately it would describe many of the current group of protesters who
basically drift from one cause to the next, be it animal rights, world
trade, welfare rights, etc, etc.whatever anarchical cause that floats their
way. Among these are paid 'activists', who like the high school kids who
skip school, stop the sign waving, quit and go home as the clock chimes the
appropriate hour. There are quite visible ties between the paid protesters
and various communist organizations who seem to have missed most of the
history of the latter 20th Century.

The 'oppose the war but support the troops' stance is one I cannot accept
when it manifests itself in public protest. During the Viet Nam conflict,
the NVA was clearly aware of the growing political turmoil in the USA. The
propaganda value of seeing what appeared to be street riots bolstered the
morale of the enemy and caused them to persevere against a superior military
foe, prolonging the conflict, and costing American(and Vietnamese) lives.

Do you really think the American service men and women in the dessert feel
'supported' when they see the 'Stop the baby killing' signs?

"Towelhead" would be best described as a cultural slur.

It might be an ethnic slur, although it applies to multiple ethnic groups,
so it isn't really a good ethnic slur.
Sikhs, for example, have an impressive amount of fabric arrayed on the head,
but are neither Arab nor Muslim. (They don't live in the Middle East,
either, as a rule.)

It's not likely to be a racial slur, as both the person making the
"towelhead" comment and the people being insulted are likely to be
Caucasian. It would be unusual to racially slur your own racial group,
although it's theoretically possible.

It's generally considered to be a culture, for which the most common
religion is Islam. However, there are also Christian Arabs and a few
Jewish Arabs. The Jews of the old testament were of Arab culture as
well. The Arabs have had many conflicts with the Persian culture in
Iran. That was the major reason for the Iran/Iraq war back in the 80's.

My point was that Arabs are not a race. They, like the Jews,
are Semitics, which is a race. Calling someone a towl head is not

Well, no, not really if you don't mind millions of Muslims vowing to destroy
the USA and all that it stands for, and willing to achieve martyrdom in
their holy cause. Other than that, there's not much downside. Oh, well,
and it will be pretty expensive. And a bunch of US soldiers will die, not
to mention hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of Iraqis. But, hey,
what does that matter - you'll have oil a-plenty for building all the
plastic whales and Disney theme parks and powerin' the family SUV to drive
clear a cross the US to see 'em.

Well it is interesting that people on both sides can see that when a person
in a democracy or republic sees an action as equivalent to murder, they must
protest. When else would they? Yet neither side can understand the
intransigency of the other when it is their idea of murder.

It is absurd to expect a peace protester that believes that war or a war is
equivalent to murder to not protest. Just as it is absurd to think that
someone that believes that abortion is also murder. It would be a much
poorer country if everyone stood aside for what they saw as murder and did
nothing. Even when I disagree, I would think less of a person if they did
nothing.

our north, Canada. And if we wanted to drill for our own, we could do
so at any time in Alaska and offshore.

Here is one big reason why we really are at war:

A group of American anti-war demonstrators who came to Iraq with
Japanese human shield volunteers made it across the border today with
14 hours of uncensored video, all shot without Iraqi government
minders present.

Kenneth Joseph, a young American pastor with the Assyrian Church of
the East, told UPI the trip "had shocked me back to reality." Some of
the Iraqis he interviewed on camera "told me they would commit suicide
if American bombing didn't start. They were willing to see their homes
demolished to gain their freedom from Saddam's bloody tyranny.
They convinced me that Saddam was a monster the likes of which the
world had not seen since Stalin and Hitler. He and his sons are sick
sadists. Their tales of slow torture and killing made me ill, such as
people put in a huge shredder for plastic products, feet first so they
could hear their screams as bodies got chewed up from foot to head."

And here is another reason:

Huge Suspected Chemical Weapons Plant Found in Iraq
Monday, March 24, 2003

Coalition forces discovered Monday a "huge" suspected chemical weapons
factory near the Iraqi city of Najaf, some 90 miles south of Baghdad,
a senior Pentagon official confirmed to Fox News.

Coalition troops are holding two Iraqi generals said to be in charge
of the facility. Defense officials told Fox News that the officers are
providing "good information" that could be crucial to searching out
and dismantling Iraq's weapons of mass destruction program.

And a third reason:

First, a few links from The Observer (uk), NY Times and PBS:

http://www.observer.co.uk/focus/story/0,6903,591439,00.html

And from Aviation Week & Space Technology:

Iraq's Tie to Al-Qaeda Terrorists, Airline Hijackings
From: Aviation Week & Space Technology
Headline: Satellite Photos Believed To Show Airliner for Training
Hijackers
Byline: Michael A. Dornheim
Dateline: Los Angeles, January 7, 2002

Satellite images of a facility near Baghdad show an airliner that
Iraqi defectors say is used to train terrorists in the art of
hijacking.Space Imaging, which operates the Ikonos civilian
surveillance satellite, was prompted to look for the aircraft in
existing photos after a ''Frontline'' television show interviewed two
Iraqi defectors who described the hijacker training and the aircraft
used for the mock attacks.

One of them drew a map of the Salman Pak training area, and Space
Imaging was able to find the facility and the aircraft in photographs
taken on Apr. 25, 2000, of an area about 15 mi. southeast of Baghdad
on the Tigris River. The zoomed-in photograph is a close match to the
hand-drawn map, lending credence to the defector's story. He is Sabah
Khodada, and said he worked at the secret Salman Pak complex for about
six months as an administrator. The facility is run by the Iraqi
secret service, and is used to teach assassination, kidnapping,
hijacking of airplanes, buses and trains and other terrorist
operations, Khodada said. ''This camp is specialized in exporting
terrorism to the whole world.''

Foreigners were trained separately from Iraqis, both Khodada and the
other defector said. The aircraft is sitting by itself far from an
airport. ''In this camp, I saw [people] getting trained [in]
situations where security will not allow you to get weapons into the
plane - then what you need to do is to use...very advanced terrorizing
methods,'' Khodada said on the television show.''They are even trained
how to use utensils for food, like forks and knives provided in the
plane....

They are trained how to plant horror within the passengers by doing
such actions. Even pens and pencils can be used for that purpose. They
can do it, and they can overcome any plane because they are very well
physically trained, and they are very strong. They can overtake a
plane in a very efficient manner. ''Training will include the way they
would sit in the plane, how they enter the plane.... They will, for
example, sit in twos, and they will assign who will sit to the right
of the other guy, and who will sit to the other side. Two will sit in
the front, two will sit in the back and two will sit, for example, in
the middle. They are trained to jump all at one time, and make a
declaration that 'We are going to take over the plane. And nobody
[move], don't move, don't make any moves.'''

They will probably use a pencil or a pen, or even sunglasses or
prescription glasses. Somebody will hold the crew members of the plane
from their chins upward tightly, and you will pull it on his neck. He
will think you are going to slaughter him and kill him. Including in
this training is terrorizing by making very, very loud noises and
screaming all over the plane. That will [create] the planned horror,
and will terrorize the plane, including the crew.'

"The aircraft was also used to practice fighting a hijacking, Khodada
said. He called it a Boeing 707, but the position of the wing on the
fuselage better fits an aft-engined aircraft. The camp was visited by
United Nations inspectors on a holiday in January 1995. The inspectors
''went all the way inside the camp,'' Khodada said. ''They saw the
plane, they saw the train, and they didn't care anything about it,
because [the commanders] told the United Nations, 'This is a camp to
train police, antiriot police.'''

Khodada said he was sure the Sept. 11 attacks involved Iraqi training
because Osama bin Laden was not capable of such a high-level
operation. ''These kind of attacks must be, and have to be, organized
by a capable state, such as Iraq,'' he said. ''Even the grouping;
those groups were divided into 5-6 people in the group. How about the
training on planes? Some of these groups were taken and trained to
drive airplanes at the School of Aviation, north of Baghdad....
Everything coincides with what's happening.''

This guy was so obviously not a vet but a phony, to be taken in by that sort

How do I know that he was a phony? First of all he was dressed in an E6's
uniform, with civilian pants and shirt! He probably got the jacket as
Army/Navy surplus or at Goodwill.

He was shown saluting, with his hand held over his eyebrow like he was
shading his eye from the sun.

No Marine has ever or will ever salute in that manner.

The fools that try to pass themselves off as veterans should be herded up

dependence on oil, which IS a very, very good thing.

The data I listed was old (from 9/1/00 -8/31/01). Here's the latest from the
DOE:
http://www.eia.doe.gov/pub/oil_gas/petroleum/data_publications/company_level
_imports/current/summary2002.html

The second column lists imports from the Persian Gulf (Persian Gulf includes
= Bahrain, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and United Arab
Emirates.). Not every company imports oil from the middle east.

I'll wait for some strong confirmation on this. I do seem to recall the US
blowing up a "suspected chemical weapons facility" in Iraq a few years ago.
It turned out to be an aspirin factory; but we got to kill a few dozen
Iraqis in the bargain. Yeee haw.

> And from Aviation Week & Space Technology:

HUGELY in bed with the Bush Administration, don't you agree? Who are
AAW&ST's biggest readers? Employees of defense contractors, of course. They
need to manufacture some reasons to be at war, now don't they? Hmm. I
wonder if they have any vested interest in finding a smoking gun?...

> Iraq's Tie to Al-Qaeda Terrorists, Airline Hijackings
> From: Aviation Week & Space Technology
> Headline: Satellite Photos Believed To Show Airliner for Training
> Hijackers

Again, I'll wait for some confirmation on this. The entire story hinges
around allegations by one defector, and little else. Nice try, but not
quite good enough. I attended a speech a few months ago given by former
chief weapons inspector Scott Ritter. His insider information on the
inspection process, and his conclusions regarding the likelihood of the
existence of WMD's in Iraq were quite compelling. His speech wasn't
filtered through the standard propaganda channels, either. There is a
shipload of jingoistic propaganda spewing forth from the US. You really
need to watch your sources at a time like this.

Look, I'm not saying the Saddam's Baath regime is good. Heck no. They're
bastards. But already we're seeing what the anti-war folks expected: lots
of collateral damage (read: dead women and children, destroyed homes, etc)

The fact remains that regardless of suspected "smoking guns," the US
coalition's aggression (don't call it a war) against Iraq is not being
received well by Iraqis. I'm siding with the historians and political
analysts who all agree that the war is likely to greatly *increase* the
amount of terrorism worldwide, especially aimed at the US and its citizens
for the forseeable future.

Now *that* is what I call a downside. Our only hope now is that the
coalition forces use great care and precisely extract the Baath regime from
Iraq. I hope for an early end to the war, and a minimum of coalition and
Iraqi casualties. That's the best we can hope for now. I have relatives
fighting in Iraq, and I support them fully. May they conduct themselves
professionally and get themselves home quickly and safely.

I'll forever regret Bush's hasty decision to invade Iraq. I do not support
his presidency as legitimate, nor his leadership as competent. I'm not
alone on this by a long stretch.

I am with you Ed. You probably do have about two brain cells.

You and the marching many in the streets are the very ones that the folk

We can go even further. Most of what Kessler says rebuts ideas that
have never been posted here, AFAIK.

It's an old technique, Jack. Attribute the most extreme views to all
your opponents, by whatever vague associations necessary. Then knock
down the extreme views you yourself stated. The dimmer people reading
your posts will think you've said something worthwhile. Hell, you may
think that yourself - depending, of course, on how bright you really
are.

Fact is, Jack, I'm not a pacifist. I'm not a socialist. I don't expect
universal peace through the the imposition of socialism. In fact, I've
never taken part in a political protest until this invasion was
imminent.

I'm merely a guy who thinks this thing is a major, major mistake - and
one which was made under false pretenses.

IOW, _I'm_ not the fool ringing some bell about socialism.
