Prentiss Riddle
I miss Gaby & Mo's, the lesbian but straight-guy-friendly coffeehouse
just across I-35 from UT. It wasn't on my regular path but I always
enjoyed its special spot in the slacker universe when I stopped by.
Now the property has been occupied by Sacred Cup, which may or may
not have a unique identity the way Gaby & Mo's did. I mean, there
was an awful lot of anarchist literature lying around so I guess
it could be incubating the next revolution, but that might just be
a reflection of the neighborhood it's in. Great cup of coffee in
any case. I took a moment for a mirrorshot and a shot of a "hey"
graffito apparently connected to the ones I'd seen before on the Drag.
Speaking of anarchists, I just stumbled onto Monkeywrench Books
at 110 E. North Loop, on one of Austin's last remaining funky
alternativista habitats, the Curve. Ah, it reminds me of the good
old days, when I was a greenie pacifist fellow traveller and kept up
with fun anarchists like boog "gentle anarchist" highberger and Bob
"I've Got a Nietszche Trigger Finger"/"The Abolition of Work" Black.
(I wonder what boog and Bob Black are up to these days?) I didn't find
much that was all that compelling to me in Monkeywrench's offerings
(their used books are sadly overpriced) but the people seemed friendly.
As a souvenir I picked up Ted Rall's graphic novel "2024". More on
that later.
And speaking of Austin funk, the mysteriously long-lived but
under-patronized Indian grocery store South Asia Bazaar has finally
bit the weavil dust and been reincarnated as Austin's most centrally
located low-budget Indian restaurant. Various veg and non-veg meals
for $3.99 and up (click on the mirrorshot below for a closeup of
the menu). Has anyone tried it yet?

I found Gaby & Mo's to be too worker-class lesbian un-chic. Very
proletariat, but without that "wink and a grin" Good Vibrations Valencia
store, er, vibe that made the butchfemmedyketransbistraightwhatever thing
inviting. In other words, it was so-so. It COULD have been a contenda.
Austin definately cries out for a real power-femme place where everyone can
mix it up and not feel unwelcome.

i've never really liked it that much. expensive with lousy decor. and TOO MANY
lesbians. jesus, i am a STRAIGHT male and do like meeting girls. i can think of
a lot more fun coffee houses all the way around. for E. Side, my vote is with
Cafe Mundi. nice atmosphere, affordable and some straight grrrls.

it's a reflection of the neighborhood. and reflection of white anarchists moving
into ethnic neighborhoods, talking about fighting gentrification an being a part
of that process themselves. go figure.

Bob Black. now that brings back some memories. reminds you of how staid and
preachy a lot of other anarchists have gotten these days.

there's also the anarchist of the radical, individual consciousness like
Thoreau. the tendency towards radical individualism is politely dismissed by
folks like Bookchin as "lifestyle" anarchists. which again shows you how staid
anarchists can be.

pretty much sunk under the weight of real anarchist organizing on globalization
issues. i like stuff like that, but ya know, it's the more organized ones that
are having an influence. i imagine Black has grown up, gotten married, has kids
and prolly has a job. me know Monkeywrench kids well, one and all. very
politicized and serious with no real memory of the good ol days when anarchists
were about 90% concurrent with punk rock. store just starting so book inventory
will take time to grow. they're just trying to get by. they also are hosting a
lot of film events, groups and speakers.

me skeptical of political theory as an end-all to human problems and
organization. too many anarchists think they have "the solution" to life's
problems. sorry, but life is too complex for ANY theory to solve all the
problems. people need to start giving a shit about each other as human beings
and think about a thing called LOVE. it sounds hippy-dippy, but it's generally
true.

inherently cool about the place just cause it has lots of lesbians. the
opportunity to meet lesbians in Austin is hardly "rare" or exotic. it happens on
a daily basis. like i say, been to Sacred Cup too many times to count.
atmosphere ain't all that and the prices are steep. i'd rather go to Mundi if
i'm on the E. Side.
and i hardly feel "threatened" by lesbians. why would i? the point is that once
you've been there a dozen times, it's more of a "been there, done that"
attitude. i'd rather go to a bar or coffee house where i can meet strait grrrls.
if i'm single and straight, why in the hell would i want to consistently go to a
place packed with lesbians? that makes about as much sense as hitting yourself
over the head with a mallet. or is trying to hook up with girrrrls now non-PC?

Sometimes, I DO go out just thinking about pussy. What of it? Who will judge me?
I am just one iota, one speck in the Universe. My morality is my own and not up
for others to question. The final judge of whether I live my life on the hinge
of Right or Wrong is myself. Feminism is a set of guidelines and a philosophy of
equality, not to be misconstrued as a new form of Morality. I will "think with
my dick" whenever I choose. I will not lock myself in a box and flaggelate
myself for my "sins".
If I see something I desire in life, I will move towards it. If I see something
I abhor, I will reject it. The guidepost for my life is my heart and Love. Love
will tell me what is right. Not a political ideology. Ideologies are mere
outlines of possibilities. But life itself is so much richer. If I see a girl
and I desire her, this is good and natural. I will move in her direction. I need
not question why. I need not turn at every moment of my life and open myself to
deconstructionalist introspection. I would rather move and be in action. This is
Taoism.
If it's my dick and eyes that move me, then all the better, for I can thank the
constellations my heart still knows passion and desire. Let these passions
consume all of my senses and my whole being. Let them wave over me like the
dawning of a Sun. My eyes should be lit with burning fires and not tamed by
others. I see a women and my eyes are swept with Beauty. So, too, the play of
light on water, the rubies of fresh strawberries, the opulent saphires of
leaves, the soft vermillions of twilight, the hazy umbers of women by candle
light. All of this, and more, I move towards.
I wouldn't let age get in the way of anything. I am old enough to have fathered
some of the girls I date. ;-) I've also unlocked part of the reason why older
men frequently date younger girls. It happens that many of them, beyond being
young and pretty, also happen to be *single*. That seems to be a prerequisite
for dating. Go figure.
