Has anybody out there noticed that Google (DejaNews) has only ten (10)
postings on this news group since Tuesday afternoon (9/24/2002). Is
something going on? Is there a problem with Google? Are posts missing
from other newsgroups, too?

Hadn't noticed until you pointed it out, but it is weird. Maybe this
is just an especially good week for living? Took a peek in some other
high-traffic groups (misc.survivalism,rec.food.cooking) and they seem
ok. Posts I made elsewhere since Tuesday via Google made it out but I
have noticed that since their new balefully Yahoo-like "Google
accounts" came out, Tuesday I think, their pages (including the search
engine) break the Find function on some browsers ... also isn't good
that nobody from their barracks is posting on
google.public.support.general ...

I posted to this thread from AOL and unless my settings (I'm not used
to it) are set to my posts not being archived, the post should have
shown up between these two posts or after this one.

One group I post to that is really slow doesn't show any posts after
Sept. 24. It's not entirely unusual for that particular ng but does
make me wonder.

The Google (DejaNews) site has been posting only three or four
messages a day in the alt.obituaries newsgroup. Unfortunately, they do
not give any e-mail addresses or phone numbers to send messages to
indicate that they are down. I wonder whether they even know that
there is a problem. The newsgroup seems to be working fine through
other newsservers.

Does anybody know how to get hold of Google to let them know what is
going on?

I tried that e-mail address and got back a very nice form letter.
However, it appears that Google (DejaNews) is back up and running as
of October 3, 2002. Posts from late September 24 through early October
3 still seem to be missing, however. I wonder whether they will
recover them or not.

The world's most complete and publicly-accessible Usenet archive was
sloppily allowed to slip into a coma for over a week with no notice or
trouble report at all -- only to later come back live, as it turns
out, with a new banner-ad and keyword-tracking scheme sewed into it.
The real obit here is the 'technology news' industry who, not having a
press release to copyedit, never even mentioned this in a passing
brief. Was Google's downtime mentioned in _any_ news media at all?

I've enjoyed its historically smart design but have never been a
Google rallier. I predict that even those who cheered the loudest will
begin to quiet if not rescind their cheers entirely over the coming
months.

All (initial) posts are restored to Google (DejaNews), and Google is
currently recording new posts. It appears, however, that they will NOT
be going back to pick up past strings missed.

Google never went back to pick up those articles that were missed.
