More details Monday, but Usenet's Black Ink Irregulars beat the Purple
Pros in the annual (except for last year) San Diego Pro/Fan. The topic
this year was JLA and Avengers, in honor of Purple Pro Kurt Busiek.
The BII jumped out to a 105-0 lead, followed by a run by the Pros to
make it 125-90. But the BII pulled it out at the end, winning by a
195-85 score.

We also learned that Len Wein still can't get questions about his own
work (being beaten to the punch on it by BIIer Tim Lynch) and that
Kurt does remember his own work, both getting the toss-up related to it
and giving a correct answer on a bonus on his work after the BII missed.

Total Pro-Fan record goes to Pros 5, Fans 3.

Erm for those of us who have never attended San Diego by virtue of
living on a completely different continent, could you explain what
this contest is and who makes up each team, besides those mentioned
here?

It's the annual fans (exclusively rac'ers?) vs. pros trivia contest at
the San Diego Comic Con. I don't know who was on each team this year.
Tom does a good job providing details on the match, so no doubt those
are in the forthcoming post he promised above.

I may have been on the winning team this year, but I didn't answer a
single question myself. At least I didn't cost the team any points,
though. And my performance matched that of Carlos Pacheco for the pro
team. :)

I checked google for the old threads and put this win/loss chart together:

2003 JLA/Avengers (fans) (BII 195-85)
2002 no match [replaced by "Beat the Geeks"]
2001 Super-teams (PP 135-125)
2000 works of Jack Kirby (PP 225-85)
1999 pre-Crisis (emphasis on Batman and the Legion) (PP 140-130)
1998 pre-Crisis Superman (PP 150-135)
1997 Silver Age (BII 195-160)
1996 no theme (BII 280-125)
1995 no theme (BII wins)

I note that during the 1998 threads, you claimed it was 2-2 instead of 3-1, and
that error has continued. Using contemporaneous discussions, I see it as tied 4
matches apiece, not 5-3 in favor of the Pros.

It's a group of four pros versus four fans in comics trivia: the Rich Morrissey
Pro/Fan Trivia Competition. The pro group's core typically consists of Kurt
Busiek, Len Wein, and Mark Waid, (aided and abetted from time to time by
luminaries like Tom Brevoort, Marv Wolfman, and Roger Stern) while the fan
group's core typically consists of whoever Tom Galloway can round up (Rich was
on the fan team for years until his death in 2001; the team usually consists of
RACers, who have included Jim Drew, Jim Murdoch, Tim Lynch, John Sardegna,
David Goldfarb, Alfred Day, Pete Bickford, Eric Sturgeon, Elmo, Sidne Ward, and
me, among others over the years).

In previous contests, there is a tossup question where a person hits a buzzer
when he thinks he knows the answer (penalty points if you incorrectly guess an
interrupted question). If you get it right, you get points and get to pick a
category of questions, and as a team you collectively discuss the answer. Get
that right, you get more points. Winner has the most points when time runs out
or the questioner runs out of questions.

Um, can I have a reference on the 1997 result? The score looks right,
but I think that you have the result reversed. That's the year which
has inspired Tom to bore us all numerous times with, "But only by
one question, that we would have got if I hadn't spaced out!".

As far as I can recall, Rich was only on the fan team in 1998 -- to be
sure, I missed 2000, so he might have been on that one.

Um, something's wrong with this. Per your own post back in 1996, the first
match was in 1995, with the BII winning 280-125. 1996 was the Silver Age
only, with Sidne and Elayne having a bet on the results. And I'm sure
we lost that one, and since that meant Sidne couldn't read any Legion stories
for a month, she'll back me on that. Your 1996 post has the score at
Pros 190-BII 170 (and we definitely lost on the last question due to my
infamous brainfart on "Dr. Erkel" rather than the correct "Dr. Erdel").

The 1997 match had the theme of pre-Crisis in general, and was won by the
BII 195-160, again per your own post at the time. So the record is
Pros 5 (1996, 98, 99, 00, 01)- Fans 3 (1995, 97, 03).

>luminaries like Tom Brevoort, Marv Wolfman, and Roger Stern) while the fan

Actually, Rich was only on the team one year, the 1998 Superman year. Given
that he was probably the only person to know more about the pre-Crisis
Superman than Mark Waid, he was invaluable in keeping the match close
(Mark was a bit faster on the buzzer). Without him, we would've been
completely crushed by Mark (who got all of the Pro team's tossups that year).

And Jim Drew was the other person who was originally guaranteed a slot on
the team if he wants it. The Pro/Fan started when he and I were banned from
the now defunct regular trivia contest for being on the winning team three
years in a row. Len had played and was in the audience when we won and were
banned, so he suggested adding a Pro/Fan to the schedule and has captained
the Pro team since. David Goldfarb later was also on the winning regular
contest team three times, and also has a guaranteed spot due to banning if
he wants it.

I'll confirm the results for 1996. It was the summer I was in LA finishing
up my dissertation right after San Diego and I couldn't even read any
Legion comics for a short break.

OK, fans, this is a prime example of why you should never smoke crack and post
to usenet at the same time. I don't know how things got so fubared, I triple
checked the results.

Here's my analysis again:

1995 First annual "Celebrity Trivia Challenge" (no theme)
BII: Tom Galloway, Pete Bickford, David Goldfarb, Eric Sturgeon
PP: Len Wein, Kurt Busiek, Roger Stern, Ted Elliott
BII wins 280-125 despite thinking that the TV Wonder Woman's
bracelets were made of amazonium instead of femininium.

1996 Silver Age (Showcase 4 to Amazing Spider-Man 122)
BII: Tom Galloway, David Goldfarb, Greg "Elmo" Morrow, Jim Murdoch
PP: Len Wein, Kurt Busiek, Roger Stern, Mark Waid
PP wins 190-170. Sidne loses bet with Elayne, has to give up reading
LSH books for a month. BII team nicknamed "Rogues Gallery
Revenge Squad" in reference to a "Flash" storyline. Tom thinks
Urkel brought the Martian Manhunter to Earth. Johanna wears a
cheerleader outfit to cheer for the BII. Tom is the only one of
the fans to get any tossup questions correct.

1997 pre-Crisis
BII: Tom Galloway, David Goldfarb, Jim Drew, Jim Murdoch
PP: Len Wein, Kurt Busiek, Roger Stern, Mark Waid
BII wins 195-160. Len Wein can't remember stuff that happened in books
he wrote. Fans bring copies of Liefeld's "Captain America" to
try to distract Waid, who kept banging his head on the table
when the BII got an easy question.

1998 pre-Crisis Superman family
BII: Tom Galloway, David Goldfarb, Jim Drew, Rich Morrissey
PP: Len Wein, Kurt Busiek, Roger Stern, Mark Waid
PP wins 150-135. Wein still can't remember stuff that happened in
books he wrote. BII team nicknamed "Usenet Chapter of the
Jimmy Olsen Fan Club", complete with the wearing of bow ties.
Audience keeps saying "finish the question!" because Mark, Tom,
or Rich keeps answering before the question is completed. Mark
is the only one of the pros to get any tossup questions
correct.

1999 pre-Crisis (emphasis on Batman and the Legion)

BII: Tom Galloway, David Goldfarb, Jim Murdoch, Alfred Day
PP: Len Wein, Kurt Busiek, Mark Waid, TBD
PP wins 140-130. Wein finally remembers stuff that happened in books
he wrote. Sidra Roberts wears the Grell-designed Night Girl
costume.

2000 the works of Jack Kirby
BII: Tom Galloway, Jim Drew, Jim Murdoch, David Lynch
PP: Len Wein, Kurt Busiek, Marv Wolfman, Tom Brevoort
PP wins 220-85 (or rather, the Kirby Iron Chefs beat yancystreet.org).
Waid defers his seat to Brevoort (who is supposed to know more
than Waid about Kirby), only to find several times he knew the
answer and Brevoort didn't.

2001 Super-teams
BII: Tom Galloway, John Sardegna, David Goldfab, Michael Grabois
PP: Len Wein, Kurt Busiek, Mark Waid, Tom Brevoort
PP wins 135-125. BII team nicknamed "Space Canine Patrol Agency's Human
Auxiliary" (and chants the SCPA's cheer in unison). Tom is the
only one of the fans to get any tossup questions correct. Event
renamed in honor of Rich Morrissey.

2002 no match, event replaced by "Beat the Geeks"

2003 JLA/Avengers (through 1986)
BII: Tom Galloway, Tim Lynch, Sidne Ward, John Sardegna
PP: Len Wein, Kurt Busiek, Mark Waid (Carlos Pacheco was a no-show)
BII wins 195-85. Wein back to not remembering stuff that happened in
books he wrote, though Busiek remembers his books. BII team
nicknamed "Snapper Carr/Rick Jones Fan Club".

Record to date:
Purple Pros - 5 (1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001)
Black Ink Irregulars - 3 (1995, 1997, 2003)
