About once a week I get that ubiquitous picture of a groups of cute
colorful ceramic clown planters with the single cactus arm growing out
of their little baggy pants. I'm sure that by now most of you here have
seen it - it's usually accompanied by the following text:

" A class of elementary students started a class project to make a
plant pot to take home and wanted to have a plant in it that was
easy to take care of, so it was decided to use cactus plants.
The students were given green ware pottery in the style of a clown
plant pot and they painted them with glaze and had them professionally
fired at a class outing so they could see the process. It was great
fun.

"They planted the cactus seeds in the finished planters and they grew
nicely but unfortunately were not allowed to take them home.
See attachment to understand why.

" The cactus plants were removed and a small ivy replaced them and the
children were then allowed to take them home. The teacher said cactus
seemed like a good idea at the time......."

I had never thought critically about it before, but couldn't the teacher
have seen the potential results long before it was time to take these
little buggers home? Cacti grow so slowly in the first place that
someone was bound to notice it, right? And for that matter, the picture
shows such cute clowns, but they're mostly alike. Anyone with a child in
grade school knows full well that each kid will want to paint the hat,
coat, pants, etc. a different color.

Okay, it's gotta be a UL. Now I have to spoil the fun of all those who
continue to send the stupid thing to me.

If you'd tell us the filename, we could probably find it on the web
somewhere.

Story and url to photo can be found at
http://www.users.fast.net/~jbrewer/Buffam/Stuff/funny.html It appears
more than obvious what the consequences would look like - similar cactus
clown planters are also offered for sale at various sites on the web.
The above mentioned web site also has a list of ulish product
translation mishaps such as "Coors put its slogan, "Turn it loose," into
Spanish, where it was read as "Suffer from diarrhea".

You know, upon studying those clown planters a bit, it appears to me like
they were designed specifically for that purpose!

If you will look closely at the background in that picture you
will notice that it isn't a classroom at all; it is the shipping
room of the mail-order firm which markets those things. They
are offered for sale, complete with cactus, at a number of
web sites and mail-order catalogs.

What's more, each of the plants in the photo is clearly more than a
couple of years old.

Not to mention that the colouring doesn't look anything like the
painting of elementary school chilluns. Too much green, purple, and
orange, and the painting on the faces all looks identical. Too much
detail on the bows and shoes. Obviously an assembly line job, and the
text that accompanies the picture is obviously just a joke. A cute
joke, but not very funny nor plausible.

Unless said teacher is very young, or very old,, well, I live in Cactus
country (Arizona) and currently have an indian sitting "Indian Style" with
such a cactus in his lap. These things, of all varieties have been sold at
park and swaps and such since I was little at least ( the 70's) and can
still be found very easily, so I can't imagine that the teacher did it by
accident.
