As far as I have read, you need to use MILO. I have a XL266 that I want to
install Linux on, but I just haven't gotten the trick to loading MILO. It
looks similar to the SRM, but I can't get Linux to load from the MILO
prompt.

Anyone have have any suggestions for us?

The easiest way is to install RH6.2, which still used the arc/alphabios/milo
based install, RH7.1 was changed to use SRM which is not available for the
XL's. But you can upgrade to 7.1 from 6.2

Make sure the disk is wiped clean before you try to do an install, as in NO
EXISTING PARTITIONS.. else the install will not create the partitions it
needs, usually resulting in a bad install.

I have installed Redhat 7.0 to XL-266.
I use ARC console and after using trial and error method I managed to use
MILO to boot XL-266.

Installation is only possible using installation program in text mode.

(Xfree86 thinks XL-266 is a Jensen computer and then hangs.)

I have RH7.0 running on my XL300 machine with no trouble at all. Follow the
instructions exactly for loading MILO from alphabios and it will work.
Check out
ftp://gatekeeper.dec.com/pub/Digital/Lin.../Miniloader/docs/HOWTO/milo.howto
If this link is dead then don't worry, the LDP alpha docs have the same info.
Make sure that when you set up milo you use the version that is shipped with
your distribution, since this keeps the vintage of the software on a par. I
found out that when I used the RH6.2 boot and ramdisk with a RH7 cd it would
not boot.
Thanks,
Scott

I have RedHat 7.0 installed in the XL-266. Actually the Alpha XL-266 boot is
working well with MILO, that is no problem. Linux operating system is also
working, I can use gcc etc. The problems arise when I am trying to install X
window system. Xconfigurator do not work. XFree86 says before hanging
"Jensen is not supported any more". This is a known XFree86 bug. I do not
know if this is a problem with XL-366.

Does anybody know which XFree86 version >4 is working, and where are the
required .rpm packages?

XFree86 4.1.0 is working well on XLT300.
X4.0.x seems to have problems with Alpha, hangs often...etc...
Don't know 'bout .rpm files ,I compiled from sources.
