I am unable to enable DMA for either the DVD or the CDRW.
They are both connected to the motherboard IDE slots as Masters, with the
HDD connected to the Promise RAID PCI card.
The IDE Bus Master is from Via.
Selecting UDMA in the BIOS, and checking the DMA box in Device Manager
reverts to the previous setting on restarting the computer (that is
'Disabled' in the BIOS, and unchecked DMA box in Device manager.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated. Should I post this in another
Newsgroup?

I found that for my AOpen CDrom drive (not the writer), there is a jumper
that had to be removed from the back of the drive to enable udma. Take a
look at the faqs on the aopen site.

A long-shot, but you don't list a sound card on an otherwise hi-spec
system. Historically, many problems like this have been caused by SB16
emulation - just disable it in the Control Panel - System - Device
Manger. Only old DOS games seem to use SB16 emulation - so no great
loss.

The jumper I gather is off by default, as it was off when I got the drive. I
have not experimented with putting a jumper on. I have not found much in the
way of documentation with regard to jumper settings on this part of the
drive. The DVD drive does not have jumpers other than those for
master/slave, so I suspect the inability to enable DMA lies elsewhere.

Thanks for your thoughts Ian. Please let me know if you think of anything
else.

The sound card is a Creative SoundBlaster Live! Platinum. I will try your
suggestion, and let you know how it goes. Thanks for your thoughts Roger.

I don't have that motherboard, so I'll ask the obvious.
Will the DMAs work with the drive directly connented to the motherboard??
It could be WinME too.

Thanks very much Roger - disabling SB16 emulation allowed the DVD and CDRW
to use DMA.

I am not a computer expert, but have some knowledge. I have not seen what
you suggested documented anywhere, and certainly not in the manuals which
came with the optical drives.

Thanks again,
