Programming for the People
Jeff, is there any chance Active State can make these releases
available to folks that want to try them out without the silly
license managers and the need to hand over all your personal
information?
I remember trying out komodo long ago. I had to turn over
my email address. At the time I seem to remember reading
something along the lines of "we won't spam you". Well,
I could not get it to work because of the stupid license
manager. The "tech support" guy was no help, the only
thing he sent me was more spam about how I should buy
the product and then it might work. It is so silly to
put your hard work into something and then have some
idiot manager decide a license manager is needed to
"protect our IP". It just keeps people from trying out
your product. If they try it, they might buy it.
As it is, I would rather just download the TclPro tools
from sourceforge.
Mo
I suppose I could email you a trial license directly. It's
understandable that you may not want to hand over critical
email addresses, and I'm sorry about the experience you had
with the previous version.

Truly, I'd like to avoid all the license stuff as well, but since
someone is paying my way, I have to agree with the licensing
decision. As it is, the email address for license requests does
become a useful key. The idea is that we hope you will become a
paying customer, and then the address is needed for all contact
and support info. Also, there are people who just continuously
download trial licenses, abusing the system. Our record here is
over 180 for one address, at last count (on a different product,
obviously, since ASPN Tcl is so new).

Ah, but then you get an quality-uncertain version that is based
on older builds of Tcl with less extensions ... Really, for
$495 (or $445 right now), TclPro and Komodo provide a lot of
useful functionality. The extra, intangible benefit is also the
time we get to spend hacking directly on the core as well as the
tools for future improvements.
