:G'night.
Another report from the Con ...
Michael has been Voted Off the Island. Don't ask me, I have no idea
why, it seems to have something to do with ending up in the wrong city
to get dinner.
I have a thousand Con Crushes again this year. No, I won't tell you
who they are. I will tell you that I'm crushing on bloody well nearly
90% of the attendees.
Angela has done an -amazing- job at cat-herding.
Angela has further done an -amazing- job at finding us a hotel.
Everything has gone smashingly well. Angela, you are the goddess of
Con organizers. You have done the best job of all of us. :*
Damian is one of the most handsome men I've ever met.
I adore Dom and Nichole. They're my favorite couple of the Con.
Ben is my hero, my protector.
The bad news of the Con: Christie, one of our non-rmta'ers who braved
the Con, managed to fall (it was Dom's fault!) and did some damage to
her knee. With the help of Rich, Jonathan, and her friend Kelly, they
went to the Duke hospital and got her some crutches and a knee brace.
There's so much more, but it's 4am and I got less than five hours of
sleep last night, so I'll give up for now.
/nad
Might as well try and keep the thread proliferation down... :)
Anyway, the Con's winding down, people are departing, and being
practically immobilized by dancing-related injuries has given me some
opportunities to reflect on my first con...
Well, I had a -blast-. Despite an initial bout of shyness that
triggered an episode of stuttering, I had a truly great time meeting everybody...
First things first: all praise and honor to the Con organizers, who
busted humps to bring off an operation which combines all the more
difficult aspects of storming Omaha beach with a brigade of anarchists.
And also to everyone who shouldered various responsibilites, such as
getting the auction together and dj-ing and all. If I could, I'd borrow
Koert's topper just so I could tip it to y'all.
You guys _rawk_.
- Angela: <bow>
{{{{{{{{{higs}}}}}}}}
The rest is just going to be a bunch of rambling impressions:
- Aimee has an uncanny knack for calling people when they are still
groggily asleep. I think it must be the key to how she gets them to her
nefarious bidding. I could also have cheerfully gone to my grave
without knowing what a Hot Carl is. But, as they say, knowledge is power...
- Hyoun is breathtaking in a cocktail dress. He's also got mysterious
powers of teleportation.
- 'drew needs to relocate to NC, so we can go get bombed at He's Not and
talk about books. :)
- One of the most frightening discoveries I made at the Con is that Ben
doesn't rehearse those puns of his, folks. That stuff is going down in
real time. The guy actually _thinks_ like that...
-I found myself coveting several Con-goers articles of clothing,
including Pom's cloak, Dom's shirt, Koert's tux, and Colin's kilt.
- I really look up to Michael the Polar Bear. Literally. :) Plus, he's
a fly dj.
- Jeni's bad example led to me spending so much on cds this weekend, I'm
prolly gonna be pimping myself to put food on the table by the end of
the month. But then, I would probably be dragging myself around the
house on my elbows right now without her superlative backrub...
- or without Rosser, my main hookup for the Naproxen Sodium. :)
- Rich is just an all-around cool guy. Anybody who can make pleasant
small talk in a hospital waiting room at 2:30 am was raised right. :)
- Nadyne should think about parlaying her expertise in Ego
Defenestration into a lucrative consulting career.. :P
- Amy kept laughing at me for some unaccountable reason every time I hit
the dance floor. Why could that be? But she's got such a nice smile I
really didn't mind... :)
- I'm glad Heather got her digital camera, and I am sad that Brian beat
me out for that sorry-ass bowtie. I was really, really trying for that...
- Rob and Kelly get many thanks for their hedged but game support of my
trans-Durham navigational ability.
- All praise to the courage of our lurkers, such as Dan and Kelly and
Kristy, who braved our freakshow...
- I wish I'd gotten to talk more to, well, just about everybody, but
especially Bramble and Nymsa and Colin and Koert and Lydia and Nichole.
And Korenstopher. And Ulrike and Fernando. And and and...
- Bon voyage to Jennie. We'll miss you. Hurry back!
I know I've left some people out - I'm punchy and groggy - but let my
brain rehydate, and I'll do better soon.
I'm glad I got to meet you all. You guys are great. All of yalls.

:Defenestration into a lucrative consulting career.. :P
Actually, I'm incorporating it into my thesis. I'm hoping that I can
publish a significant body of work based around my ability to insult
anyone within a ten-mile radius (including myself).
There's a heap going in the other room. All of the remaining folks
are participating, with the exception of nymsa and evilcolinfindlay
(nymsa's not feeling well), Koert (who has more sense than joining 15
people on two double beds pushed together), bramble (ditto, I assume),
and me (can't be that close to that many people at once).
There shall be posts full of in-jokes. Ain't post-Con grand?
/nad
Now mine! Since I'm going off for a week, I figured I should write this
while still fresh....or at least as fresh as I'm gonna be. *wiping
sleepies from her eyes*
:Michael has been Voted Off the Island. Don't ask me, I have no idea
:why, it seems to have something to do with ending up in the wrong city
:to get dinner.
Aimee was second off the island, for getting us lost on the way back
from dinner, all the while sounding perfectly confident that we were
going in the right direction.
:I have a thousand Con Crushes again this year. No, I won't tell you
:who they are. I will tell you that I'm crushing on bloody well nearly
:90% of the attendees.
Tell me about it.
Now, for some specific mentions...
Angela is awesome, no doubt about it, and Aimee does a fistfuckload of
work for no reason that I can discern except out of the goodness of her
heart. (I wonder if that's worse than calling her cute.) The hotel
worked out so well we didn't have anything to bitch about. They were
incredibly accommodating, the food was fantastic, and the rooms were
more than decent.
I'd forgotten how much fun Jonathan is to be around. He's such a funny
bastard, an honestly sweet guy, and a hella cool dancer -- he probably
used more energy in those few hours on the dance floor than I did all
weekend.
Nadyne and Rich remind me slightly of myself and Brian, but I think
we're a -little- more toned-down.
Rosser reminds me an awful lot of Chas, especially on the dance floor.
It was kind of freaky for a while.
I didn't expect Koren's voice to be so deep. And, for someone who
professes not to like men with long hair, I found Corey to be oh-so-sexy
on the dance floor.
Michael -is- huge. I had to stand Brian next to him to get a sense of
proportion, he's that big.
Dom and Nichole seemed somewhat overwhelmed with everyone for a while,
but who wouldn't be? And they're so cute together. :)
'drew is quite nifty, and I don't know if I'll ever pronounce the r
anymore, thanks to /nad.
Alan looks so happy while bouncing on his big blue ball. And I finally
got to see him drop his pants.
Christie and Kelly are incredibly brave. I'm sorry there was an injury
and I hope it doesn't mean Christie will never hit the dance floor
again. =(
I wish I had more time to talk to nymsa and bramble and (especially)
colinfindlay (I'm a sucker for accents, dammit) and Koert and Ulrike
and, well, everyone else.
And now, since I DID get the digital camera (yay!), here's a link to my

I love the fact that you found it in your heart to get these up so
fast! I love looking at the pics. It really helps to drive the point
home that I wish that I was there. I had to search for a picture of

he got voted off the island because it's all his fault. ;)

random impressions follow, some of which may even be coherent:
first off, this can't possibly have been a con 'cause there were no
hotel problems to speak of, afaik. the hotel was lovely and the banquet
was yummy and veggie-friendly and although a small crowd of hotel
employees gathered in one corner of the banquet room and pointed and
whispered, we didn't appear to frighten the hotel staff much. big
((higs)) for angela for doing a wonderful job of local organizing, and
as always, for aimee for running this thing every year.
either n.c. is really easy to get lost in, or none of us have any
fucking sense of direction. :) however, i was astonished that a veggie
can eat quite well--i mean, it *is* the south, where they think nothing
of putting meat in your veggies whether you want it or not.
siobhan has the coolest hair color i've seen in quite some time.
john looks good with no hair, and koren did a lovely job shaving him.
garrett is utterly adorable. period.
dancing in corset bad. bad! but at least john and damian had the
opportunity to try it on after i ditched it. (which, afaik, is the only
striptease on john's video camera).
speaking of which: camcorder rapid response team indeed! i can't wait to
see john's con video. it's....interesting. i'm hoping john will edit out
most of the footage of my tongue.
michael the polar bear and colinfindlay do a hilarious, if somewhat
disturbing, masochism tango.
at some point during the weekend, everyone's ass was on alan's big blue
ball.
i seem to have acquired a number of new titles as a result of this con,
including midori whore, backrub whore [1], amaretto stone spice and
fastrada flor de maria morales. (thanks damian, i know i'm prolly
spelling at least part of that wrong.) it also was determined that while
some women use men for sex, i use them as furniture. there are photos to
attest to this, i'm sure.
i can, in fact, get along quite nicely on almost no sleep. i've never
been awake this much at a con.
it's just not a con if you don't learn about a new and unusual sexual
practice, and thanks to dom, we did. who's up for a hot carl? ;)
anyway: i know if i attempt to say something nice about everyone who was
there i'll leave someone out and then i'll feel bad later. so suffice it
to stay that i immensely enjoyed meeting you if i hadn't before and i
was very happy to spend more time with old friends, some of whom i
haven't talked with much at the last couple of cons. you all rock.

I don't -personally- know everyone's sense of direction... But being a Nord
Carolignian for well over a decade, driving for roughly half that, it is
frustrating. Since limited planning occurs (Fayetteville, Greensboro,
Winston-Salem, North Raleigh area), roads and townships seem to sprawl
everywhere. I remember the first time I got lost in Greensboro... The
attendant at teh gas station told me to find one of five major roads and go
from there as everything -- as he put it -- runs in "wacky, eccentric
circles."

Heh heh heh. Yay. Many times there would be big phatty hunks of bacon in
my green beans... And, at one place I asked for vegetarian baked beans, it
came back with a side of ham. Hey -- at least it's a side.
Hey -- at least you didn't dine at the UNC-Greensboro cafeteria, featuring
its ever-popular "Three Cheese Vegan Quiche." :P Oh yeah.

The Con, in a nutshell:
I get to work today, and a cow orker comes up to me and says:
"Man, you ok?"
"Yeah, why?"
"You're walking all funny and deflicted."
"Walking funny?"
"Yeah, like you're in pain or something. You look like you been in an
industrial accident."
And that, after all, is what it's all about. :)

As a con first-timer, I've now been spoiled and will expect this
standard of hotel quality at all future cons. Thanks Angela. ;)

Mim! Oh sure, don't speak up until I'm back on my side of the Mason-
Dixon line. As long as we're doing the retroactive compliments thing,
I was rather taken with your volume of flame-coloured tresses. Rich
-did- say that the second-spouse addition would be kosher with him,
didn't he....?
To follow the random impressions trend:
As fastrada connors pointed out, Alan's BBB has been warmed by every
posterior at the Con, and managed to knock out a ceiling panel or two
as well.
I'll be starting my monthly blackmail payments to Talamasca at the end
of the week. Doubtless he has more bare-chested, gyrating footage of me
than fully-clothed at-rest shots, and I'm sure I was only aware of his
presence half the time. You move like a cat, man.
I'd like to praise WyrdWoman's ice-cube transfer technique. Her skill
at avoiding the dread fate of becoming papyrus is also laudable.
Michael very graciously hosted the same-sex lust-a-thon in his room,
if perhaps unwittingly. Did you know that his housekeeper offers a
variety of services?
As reported, Ben is a shoot-from-the-hip punnist, which is as unsettling
as it is entertaining. Rich aka Flavo did an admirable job of keeping
pace with him at the cruel table.

it renewed my faith in humanity to have so many righteous, groovy folks
in one place at one time.

I was thinking about this last night. I seem to recall at the 1998 Con
in Atlanta, Michael also got us lost. Or was it Becky Blue Girl? All I
know is that we got a not so short tour of a not so nice part of
Atlanta. Eventually we got there but not after my feet hurt more than
my hunger pains. Maybe it should be a Con rule that no one lets Michael
be a guide?

This was the point I was trying to make. This is something you would say
about a story, for example. A moralistic story expresses a concern with
morality. A person would be _moral_ (characterized by morality.) "I'm very
moral, and I write a moralistic web site."

This is what fastrada flor de maria morales was saying, that moralistic
connotes "narrow-minded." Kind of like the difference between "complex" and
"complicated."

just to interject here: while we were all in the room, koren called

Seeing as how roughly every fifth phrase that pops out of my mouth never

veiled allusion with hints of innuendo. I call it alluendo. :-P (Alluendo

Move to Raleigh, then. Raleigh's nice.
See, not all of the Triangle is ghetto. Other folks in the Triangle tend to
call Durham ghetto, because it has a significantly higher crime rate than
its surrounding areas. Some people (like myself) do this quite jokingly,
other are completely serious.
I can't speak for Durham (other than to amuse myself by pointing out things
as "the ghetto" and "not the ghetto"), but the rest of the Triangle is
fantastic. It's a very liberal area, especially compared to the rest of the
State. We boast some fantastic coffee shops, bookstores of every size and
description, great bars, restaurants, varied cultural events, good schools
from kindergarten all the way to higher education. We're 2 1/2 hours from
the beach and four from the mountains. The summer's a little sticky, but
winter is just about right. Both spring and fall are incredible....

out the problem - the roxboro exit i was fmailiar with to get to the hotel
was from 147, not 85. 'doh!

some of which we viewed at karen's place in lexington. the open-shirt
table-dancing scene was particularly entertaining. john may be able to
retire with your blackmail payments.
there's more of me and colin showing on that video than you, but i don't
think either of us minds.

that was *my* room michael was pimping himself out of. actually, i got
the impression that the services he was offering were complimentary for
all hotel guests. once again, the best hotel ever! :D

i slept less at this con than i ever have. i'm a baby about getting my
rest, but this year i'd still feel wired when i went to bed, and i'd wake
up completely alert 5-6 hours later. i finally crashed on karen's second
floor porch for a whole 9 hours monday night, and i slept 12 hours last
night with a brief interruption to get fredrik to the bus station. don't
worry, this time he was only going 200 miles on the bus.

what are you talking about? you were still ticklish. ;)
i'm sure in dom's sick little mind, we all really *did* want a hot carl,
too. ;)

826 was the laundry room on Friday night, where the scary bald guy
showed up and where the housekeeping services were first made known
to us.... I was referring to the 817 debauchery that followed the
banquet, whereupon cag phoned, the Love Chair lived up to its title,
heterosexuality suddenly became the minority, and lap dances made an
appearance on the agenda. ;)

I'm quite aware of that, having had a goodish conversation with Fredrik
(which was very cool). After asking him which languages he spoke, I
took the mention of German as an invitation to showcase my variety of
stock traveler phrases. ;)
I unfortunately didn't get a chance to speak with Ulrike, though I did
inadvertently shoot her with Corona spray as she passed though my
vicinity. Sorry 'bout that by the way....

It would be even more tasteless to point out that stairwells are
conveniently deserted at four in the morning.... Now quit your

erm, i don't know about pimping himself, but this particular same-sex

Yeah, it does, and I've got an "in" with them. Actually, I've got a
very big "in" with the Fairmont here in town, were if everything
breaks right, I'd love to put us.. I know, I know, it's not the
"normal chain" but a brief history: it's been the home of a political
convention, it's ranked as one of the top 100 hotels in america, and
if we didn't have an "in" room costs are over $400/night.. but with
the "in" we have, the break may put an entire floor at less then $70
nightly, to occupy an entire floor (with of course, your own private
ballroom we'd have 24/7 access to) but, admittedly, that's the
longshot one :) But not saying I'm not letting my contact with them
work on it :)
But the Westin, as well as another Marriot are right in the right
place in town here in KC: the problem with the hyatt is that it is in,
ahem, not the good part of town (Crown Center) it's horribly
expensive, and there is almost nothing nearby.. I'd love to put us
near westport or the plaza, so those are the places I'm investigating,
and those are the places I've got contacts.

well, strictly speaking, you're not supposed to publicize what you've
heard during the game unless it's ok with all parties. but as there's a
fair amount of flaunting going on here, i'll waive my objection. :)

Not a statement of fact, luv, just alluding to the second unintentional

Not possible. Besides, when asked at "I Never" if you'd ever had sex with
an rmta-er, you said, "Ask me after Sunday." So I had permission to pry.

I had the Leg Spasms of Death for three nights in a row. And I dance

Yes indeed. I got to talk to Nichole a little and she said I looked
