I find I learn better from video than from books, so I've been looking for
videos to recommend for beginners.

So far I've found this one:
"Getting Started in XC Skiing - Classic Technique", narrated by Steve
Gaskill, packaged by the National Cross-Country Ski Education Foundation
("Instructional series V1006").

I think it has very helpful demonstrations and tips for beginners.
Including "how to fall".

OK -- not the newest clothing and style, and not "slick" -- but definitely a
better way to learn Classic skiing technique than just reading about it and
looking at still pictures.

Anybody know any other beginner videos in English?
(for Classic or Skate or both).

Has anyone seen the interactive DVD-ROM, "Fundamentals of XC Skiing
Technique", from www.xczone.com ?

The late 80s video by Dan Clausen, Nordicross!, is a very good
tape for beginners and intermediates. It includes long classic
and skate sections and gives the fundamentals of skis and waxing
for each. It's still available. Check Eagle River Nordic or New
Moon.

The two videos on classic and skating produced by Nordic Equipment are
good for beginners. They are in the New Moon catalog.

The video on Classic technique I've got from Nordic Equipment Inc seems to
me like it's targeted for racers, not beginners.

I like it as racer-technique video, but:

- - It does not have a _progression_ of technique levels, like beginner -
intermediate - advanced. It just tosses you in with Oddvar Bra as the model
of _the_ right way to ski.

- - many of the tips and exercises are oriented toward enhancing speed and
strength for racers, not fun (or survival). e.g., maximum extension of
stroke, specific separate exercises for arm and abdominal muscles for
poling.

When I compare it with a video targeted for beginners -- like the "Getting
Started" video from NCCSEF and Steve Gaskill -- the two have very little in
common.

I also have the Skate technique video from NEI, and I don't remember it
quite as well, but I think that also was targeted for racers, not beginners.

I've been hesitant to say that anything critical about the Utah
tape, but I don't think either of them are that helpful for
beginners, except for the games (and one can get the Odvar Bra
tape separately). I still suggest the Dan Clausen tape. What's
the title of the Gaskill tape? I recall a dryland one with
classic rollerskiing and another with that fellow sitting in
front of a monitor dissecting technique of WCers.

I have the original PBS series Cross Country Ski School on VHS from back in the
80's . Excellent basic skiing instruction. Contact me if anyone wants a copy.

That was the brother and sister classic skiing in the Canadian Rockies
if I remember correctly. It was one fantastic series...

Hi John-
That is absolutely the best instructional series I have ever seen. How would I get a copy?

Ah, it's been 10 years... Haven't heard from JW in awhile.

I may have a copy buried in a box in the garage. Also try your local
library's Interlibrary Loan dept and see if they'll go for a VHS
request. My library's site is down right now, but a direct World
Catalog search turns up several library copies around the country:
http://www.worldcat.org/search?qt=worldcat_org_all&q=the+Cross-country+ski+school.
If I recall the series correctly, I found Bill Koch's "if you can walk,
you can ski" approach friendly but misleading; both are valid forms
of propulsion, but there's a big difference, namely the one between
walking and boulder hopping. I like Dan Clausson's 1988 NordiCross!
VHS better. It covers classic, skating and waxing. Last time I spoke
with Dan he disowned it, probably because of the skating, which was
different at the time, but I found the classical section and the
handling of downhills worthy.

Looking again at the catalog link, I probably confused this with the
ESPN/Bill Koch series. I have the skating VHS for that.
