This place just opened up (I believe less than 2-3 weeks ago). A couple
of my friends have been there and had positive things to say about it.
According to one of them this is definitely better than Sarovar (not
sure if that's saying a whole lot).

Have any of you been there? They have a [lunch??] buffet for $4.99. This
is in the shopping complex right next (South) to H-E-B on Lamar &
Rutland (or is it Rundberg??).

I just went by there and got some more info.

It's in the Northgate shopping center- the South-West corner of Lamar &
Rundberg, NOT Rutland :o(

The buffet is for lunch (11am-3pm) on weekdays. On the buffet the had
Chicken Tikka, Chiken Korma, Biriyani, Rice, Nan, Shak Paneer, Keema
(ground beef curry). The price, $4.99, is for a limited time. But they
couldn't (or wouldn;t) say how long it would be before it's changed.

Sounds like you need my new Restaurant Service. You give me the money (+tax
and tip), and I go and write a review for you.

So, did you actually try the place? It used to be an Urgent Care Center
and they spent a fair amount on fixing the place up to be a restaurant.
They were working on it every day for 4-5 months. If it doesn't succeed,
it'll be one a waste of money.

Was it an Urgent Care Center? Tandoori House?

So, what would you say about Spider House?
I'm an editor of a newsletter and need to write Restaurant/cafe reviews.
I'll give you $1.00 (+tax) for a cup of coffee. lol

Excellent idea (for a business)!!!!!!! Almost as good as the one Homer had - Step 1) Come up with an business idea, Step 3) Make tons of money (or become a millionaire or something).

No, I haven't (I'm not too fond of Indian restaurants - in general). But I am planning on going soon. And as soon as I do, and post a review here, I'm going to be expecting a payment from you all ;o)

I guess I should open up a paypal account or something to be able to take payment?!?

It was a medical office. At also served as a Red Cross [blood]
donation center for a while after 9/11.

Spider House I already reviewed. And it'll cost you more than $1 for
coffee there - nice try though ;-)

I thought Tandoori House next to YMCA north park branch has changed its name. They
had a lunch buffet for about $4.99 as well.

For having to sit down on a 30-year-old sofa?
I give them credit for having syrup (I don't like to use sugar for my iced coffee.
It won't melt!)

Tandoori *Palace*. Different place, a block north of Shalimar. It used
to be a Pho place, and previous to that a thai place. Wasn't very good
the one time I had dinner there (as Tandoori Palace).

Well, I finally made it to Shalimar. It actually IS pretty good. But
the lunch buffet for $4.99 is not going to be last much longer. the
items I found on the buffet were,

Biriyani - rice with Beef
Chicken Tikka - marinated Chicken baked in Tandoor Oven (I believe)
Keema - ground beef with peas
Mutton korma - goat meat curry with a touch of yogart
Naan - bread
Shaak Paneer - spinach with cheese
Vegetable
Pilaf
Fruit
Dessert

The Chicken Tikka was very juicy and not red like most other places.

My only complain - everything's too "spicy", not hot, but spicy :o(
But it didn't bother most of my friends, so maybe it's just me.

Their lunch hour is from 11am to 3pm.

We checked out Austin's newest South Asian restaurant the other night,
Shalimar Restaurant at 9310 N. Lamar. It's a halal (i.e., "Muslim
kosher") place with "Indian, Pakistani and Banglasdeshi cuisine",
meaning lots of beef and chicken, including (yum!) seekh kabab.
My wife had an excellent aloo palak (spinach and potatoes) so they
do okay by vegetarians, too.

On the plus side, I'd have to say that Shalimar is the cleanest,
best-lit budget South Asian restaurant I've ever been in. On the
minus side, it has a pair of hi-res big-screen TVs positioned so
they're visible to every seat in the place. That might be a plus
except they're tuned to a satellite channel showing Bollywood hits
in all their violent glory.

We got there in time to see the very pretty and somewhat daring
love scene (real kissing!) from the beginning of Hey Ram, which had
us pleasantly glued to the TVs over each others' heads; but after a
commercial break it was followed in short order by the gang-rape of the
young wife from the love scene, mercifully off camera but with plenty
of screaming, followed by a bloody reenactment of the partition riots
of 1947 Calcutta. Not exactly the right ambience by which to enjoy
one's roti-kabab, and nothing we'll bring the kids to see, either.
Nor could I quite get over the cognitive dissonance of crossing
communal lines (quasi-Hindus that we are) to watch Hindu-Muslim
atrocities in a Muslim restaurant. When the proprietor came out
with a remote control I thought he was going to change the channel,
but he just raised the volume. Fortunately he left the meat cleaver
in the kitchen.

I guess when all is said and done, the famous South Asian tolerance
wins out, at least this far from the front lines. Still I don't
think I'd want to try doing the same thing in Ahmedabad.

By the way, according to the online Vocabulary of Indian Food, "seekh
kabab" has nothing to do with Sikhs; a seekh is a skewer. Silly me,
and I had been wondering why the characteristically Muslim dish was
named for the Sikhs!
