ANSWER:
The same as any other species on earth -
To make more of itself and therefore keep the gene pool diverse.

(Apologies to the religious types out there, but any other I can think of
places people in some way above animals and all higher lifeforms work in
roughly the same way, ie DNA etc.)

Thanks for the comment Alfred. I tried to stay away from mentioning any
kind of creator-God type of character for two reasons:
1) I'm not superstitious
2) Second guessing the mind of a universe creator would be like a baked
bean trying to figure out what the head of Heinz foods was thinking... An
impossible task.

-- OR --

A universe creator created a universe which would evolve intelligent(ish)
beings who were able to contemplate the question 'What is the meaning of
life?' and maybe one day arrive at a suitable answer. But then again maybe
not, who knows?

Fist off, forgive me, I'm not much of a writer but I'll try to make this

as clear as I can.
If one looks at the earth and all it's components, we see that
everything has it's place to make life possible. This planet is a
living, breathing, thinking, and procreating being. The atmosphere
provides protection for space debris and harmful radiation (the skin).
The trees clean the air, converts co2 into o2, and helps lower the air
temperature (the lungs). The polar caps run the pump that circulates the

oceans water and maintains a fairly constant average temperature world
wide (the hart). We as human beings have a vital role in this organism
call earth. We are the brain, the decisions made, the actions we take
all directly effect our body (the earth). Our purpose for being is to
keep the earth healthy, and protect it for harm. But the earth is only
one in a larger living universe.

The purpose of the human race is a question that demands of an answer
the utmost seriousness that I can only reply in that manner......... We
were put here by the creator of "That which is", for the sole purpose
of perfecting the hot pepper. The habenaro is approaching the goal of
the ultimate heat, but much needs be done in the quest for the perfect
pepper. In the infinite cosmic approach to hot we are a long way from
there, which is probably good, as I assume when we have created the
perfect pepper the powers that be may decide they are quit tasty with
humans......

Good answer, sort of along the lines of the Gaia (or however it's spelt)
living-earth-as-a-distinct organism idea.

How do you know that this is "our purpose",
did you have an encounter we don't know about?
With an alien life-form perhaps? I mean: Who the hell told you this?
People at other newsgroups think otherwise. So please,
don't act like you have "the knowledge".

Sorry, but I disagree: 'He who dies with the most toys, still dies'

My answer to this question is that the purpose of the human race is to
fill in another gap and to evolve further, or if the case should be
destroy ourselfs and out planet while attempting to do so

Hey, chill! You're OK, Jer.
Although lots of people think I kill-filter everybody out
as soon as I have a little quarrelling with them, this
is not the reality of the matter. In fact, I keep reading
every posting I get my eyes on, I'm, like you, a very
positive-minded person; I like humans, also, or maybe
even more than others, those being portrayed as less
intelligent. Stupidity is a blessing, by the way,
let's not forget that.

The term "superbrains" in the subject-line attracted
my attention, that is definitely not to say I have one.
I'm currently working on reviving my childish stupidity,
'cause obviously life is a lot more fun being stupid.

On the contrary! I understand him completely!

Haha.

But suppose, for a minute, that he DOES know....or that maybe EVERYONE
KNOWS EXCEPT YOU!! Perhaps we have just been put on this earth as living
drones for a play in which YOU are the main character. Impossible you say?
How do you KNOW? Because they think, therefore they ARE? Maybe they DON'T
really think. Maybe they are a complex system of androids that the
divine-whatever has put here to keep you from getting lonely. Think about
it.
