I think SPISPOPD should have been nominated for Game Bytes "Best Game
1993"!

BTW, any news on the release date? I've seen some screen shots from
the alpha version. Wow!

According to the press release, SPISPOPD will be available as shareware in
the 1st qtr of '94. It will feature an open ended architecture, so that
users can modify the ray-traced animation to look like polygon filled
graphics. You will also be able to program the general midi support to be
simple beeps and chirps from the PC speaker. If you act quick, I think I
saw the alpha out on one of the ftp sites--I think it was
uradumbass.so.ami.

I truly think that a few of us need another reason to live besides waiting
for Doom and tormenting each other. Thank goodness it's only another
30-100 days before SPISPOPD is released!

Simple. The reason it wasn't nominated was the lack of player gender support. Most of my female friends only play games with female characters, like Epic's QWERTY-UIOP. Considering the huge influence of this huge market segment, it is no wonder SPISPOPD was left flat. Also the fact that it required a 12mhz 286 with 384K free ram, and the killer, a two sided floppy drive, detracted greatly from its appeal too. Of course I'm telling you all this from playing the alpha, which I accidentally downloaded from so

me pirate BBS, thinking it was the DOOM FAQ version 245.3. I have seen the alpha and WOW! Of course I've since deleted it and wont tell you where to get it from, no matter how hard you beg.

I found this very upsetting. I really like to appeal to my feminine side

I heard that instead of having actual ray-traced pumpkins, they're going to
rewrite the engine to use polygons due to size considerations (and besides,
life-like ray-traced pumpkins would add nothing to the game) As a side note,
the promised Real-Life-Sound, for that extra "you are THERE" effect as pumpkin
innards splatter your coveralls, was taken out because "it would be REALLY
neat, but it's just not practical because, er, well, ummm, yknow.."

Last I heard, the release date was still firm until the week of release...

SPISPOPD, where the sanest place to be is the pumpkin patch 'round back...

Well, it's a nice game, since I snagged a beta from a friend. Features include:

16.7 million color palette on a 256k vga card using palette translation
Full surround sound using THX technology with
Native GUS, Soundblaster, and speaker sound.
3 player support over null modem or standard modem (300 baud to 28.8k)
Intelligent computer players using Turing AI logic
Moving walls, ceiling and chair you sit in (chair not included but plans are)
Gravis gamepad support (Using 2 gamepads for 2 player action!)
God mode is real neat: All game factors including gravity can be changed!


I'm uploading this to ftp.uwp.edu, wuarchive, and of course ftp.uml.edu
It's in the incoming directory for now, but will move of course.

Look for file: SPISPOPD.ARJ, SPISPOPD.A01, SPISPOPD.A02, SPISPOPD.A03
each is 1.44 megs.

The beta crashes on anything less then a double CPU 486 running Windows 4
and 32meg ram for right now, since it's using a lot of overhead and buggy code.

Final specs call for it to run on a 8086 with at least 10 meg harddrive
and EGA graphics.

Id, You guys have outdone yourselves! WAY cool! I'll register this on for sure!

on the Beta-zed and there's NO WAY this game should ever leave dry-dock. Really

Hundreds of people have downloaded it and emailed me much thanks.

Id has admitted that the current beta is buggy, but since they want as much
good PR as possible, they will allow people to grab this for the next 2 days
only. After that, the beta is illegal. Grab it now!

Look for SPISPOPD.ARJ and 3 other files A01 - A03 all 1.44 megs

still in incoming directory on ftp.uml.edu, wuarchive, and ftp.uwp.edu


Hint for good play: Run a clean system with Windows 4 running in real mode.
Use a good set of speakers for sound, and wired up the chair as directed
in the instruction. WAY cool!

Diane, what's wrong with it? I found this game whips butt!

For instance: The pumpkins look real, even when exploded
The dogs seems to move like real dogs
The room with the snake is WAY harder then any old Wolf3D one.
The Weaponry is pretty neat, especially the megawatt laser.

Remember, it's just a beta, and the wall shooting doesn't work well, the
frame rate sucks, and of course, it's a crashing monster 90% of the time.

Anyone else got any favorite bits? I understand the Apogee rep already
is waiting with baited breath to use the engine for Easter Ernie.

I heard that the REEEALLLLYYY cooooool guys at ID put in female characters
not so long ago. However they are still being criticized due to the fact
that there aren't characters that represent every single racial/religeous
group. In addition, id has been slamed by a feminist group because the
female character's body is too "perfect" >

No joke, SPISPOPD is WAY cool! Best game ever! It stands for Smashing Pumpkins
into Small Piles of Putrid Debris. Download it Now! I understand that
Compu$erve has even make it a half price download for the next 2 days.

IF you see this game, you'll never play anything else (well, till Easter Ernie!)

Also, an anonymous source has confirmed that Easter Ernie will be out in late
May 94 and right after that Birthday Bert in late June 94.

well of course the boss on the finale level was the absolute best part,
tho' I had to have 2 new 4M simms FedExed overnight so I could finish
it, and even so I had to reboot my sytem 17 times before I could get
past the evil gramma guarding the elevator and the explosions at the end
blew out both my speakers...wow what a cool game!

But confusing newbies is so much fun! :-)

Of course, the best part about SPISPOPD is its open nature. Everyone on
the Net has participated equally in writing the code, composing the music,
and drawing the graphics. Anyone can add any feature at will. And the
general public knows as much about the specs and file formats as ego does.
(Note to the clueless: ID DID NOT DO SPISPOPD! THEY'RE JUST DISTRIBUTING

I heard that to make the game virtual reality, it will come with these
easy-to-use tools and instructions (in Australian) for playing the
game in VIRTUAL REALITY. Basically you've got to buy a CyberMan 2000
(less than 2000$ dont worry), take your monitor and strap it on to
your face.

Just like being there! Though if you dont use it properly your face
may fall to the ground.

Probably have all these people wasting tons of moneyt of Pentiums just
to be able to play SPISPOPD. IS there a beta for SPISPOPD 2 yet?

Due to an unfortunate setback, SPISPOPD will not be available for mid-94
as expected. We will ahve to put it back to December 30, 1994. For
SURE.

But hey, its still legit for best game of 94!

Denis, before you go posting to the world, check with people who know better:

SPISPOPD is gonna be released Feb 29! I just got email about it and
basically, the unfortunate setback was solved (the proper application of
a flame thrower can work wonders...) and things are back on track again!

The dogs don't really move at all. They are on invisible 4-way tracks that
move the static dogs.

Due to memory considerations, it is now a kilowatt laser.

This is true, it still crashes, it just isn't a monster anymore. They took
out the wall shooting. It adds no intrinsic value to the game play.

Actually, Apogee along with Maxis are negotiating with id on how to get in
bed with each other. This will definitely extend the time; particularly
in view of the fact that Maxis just threw out their perfectly good extender
to take advantage of the decrease in extender prices.

I did just that, but I found that it helps to pull your speaker out, and
gripping that in you neck too. That way I could *FEEL* the pop's as the
pumpkin-seeds burst. (NOTE: this feature is only available on the
PENTIUM-version.

"SPISPOPD" 2's romoured to include free bump-gloss posters of the developers,
FEWL DYAH and TRUTE WITTS.

SPISPOPD rules the game-world!

Gee. Now you know how we all feel after reading thousands of posts by teenagers
about how DOOM is going to take over the world. I haven't seen this much pointless
hype since Microsoft tried to make NT out as the next comming! And we all know how
poorly NT has been received.

Maybe DOOM will be a great game. I won't mind. Until it's released, all this hoo-ha is
pretty immature.
