I'm pleased to announce that Leon Brocard has volunteered to be the
latest victim^Wgenerous remover of entropy for maintenance of 5.5.
He can speak for himself on his plans, but I know he'll at least be
taking care of those pesky errors that befall anyone who tries to
compile 5.5 with modern gcc....

Please join me in piling on the, uh, congratulations. :-)

Thank you for the wonderful introduction.

My plan is to release a 5.5.4 soonish which builds under modern
operating systems and with modern libraries.

I really believe in Nicholas' view that it is a moral imperative to
maintain old releases of Perl. I don't plan on changing much at
all. Bug fixes will not be part of 5.5.4. Security fixes won't be part
of 5.5.4. This is much like 5.6.2.

Suggestions and offers of help welcome.

[Unfortunately, I won't have much time to work on this before
christmas, but I'll get the hacking started and then have a better
idea of how long till the release].

Many thanks to the previous pumpkins for getting us on this road, Leon

And good luck in this new maze of twisty little hackery

Start with the hint files, and Makfile.SH
when you think you're ready, ask^Wtell Abe what you need for 5.5.4 smokes
make 5.5.4 rsync'able (which I think it already is) and go for white

Upgrading MakeMaker might help. Also maybe h2ph and xsubpp. And if you
upgrade MakeMaker you've got to pull in Test::More.

Muhahaha! Better than a time machine that is. :)

That's a slightly non-trivial task, because you will need other changes
to the perl core to make it happy. Look at change #20984 to see how I
did it for 5.6.2. And before doing this you'll need to upgrade Test::*
and t/harness / t/TEST.

And from me too! Thank you for taking this task upon you, Leon.

Asking will do :-)

Here is the current state of affairs:

Automated smoke report for 5.00503 patch 18681 on linux - 2.4.18-4gb (i686/1

Report by Test::Smoke v1.18.11 (perl 5.6.1) [23 minutes 26 seconds]

O = OK F = Failure(s), extended report at the bottom
X = test(s) failed under TEST but not under harness
? = still running or test results not (yet) available
Build failures during: - = unknown or N/A
c = Configure, m = make, M = make (after miniperl), t = make test-prep

18681 Configuration (common) -Ui_db
------------ ----------------------------------------------------------------
O O
O O -Duse64bitint
O O -Duselongdouble
O O -Dusemorebits
| +--------- -DDEBUGGING
+----------- no debugging

Summary: PASS

If you want, I'll try to update my smoke-farm this weekend and run this
5.005xx smoke on them to get an impression.

Good luck,

Abe
