ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

My sincerest thanks to Computer Specialist Steve Langford at King Hall

share with me his extensive knowledge about the geography,
history, and demographics of Yolo County.

* Russ Hersch, author of FAQs about FAQs, who inspired me to write
my own FAQs (even though he probably has no idea who I am).

* My father, David F. Prenatt (1931-1984), commonly known as Dave
Prenatt (one of the most brilliant systems analysts of all time),
and my mother, Shirley Prenatt, who helped both my father and me

The Yolo County, California USENET FAQ Part 1 of 3
Frequently Asked Questions about Yolo County, California
(c) Copyright 1995 & 1996 by David F. Prenatt, Jr.

1) ABOUT THIS FAQ.

1.1) Who wrote this FAQ and how can I reach him? [Rev]

This FAQ was written by me, David F. Prenatt, Jr. Until further
notice, you can reach me by my e-mail at the Davis Community Network

Net...@dcn.davis.ca.us (<mailto:Net...@dcn.davis.ca.us >)

or by snail-mail (i.e., U.S. Mail) at my Davis P.O. Box:

David F. Prenatt, Jr.
Internet Esquire(SM)
P.O. Box 74632
Davis, CA 95617-5632

or on the World Wide Web (<http://www.dcn.davis.ca.us/~netesq/ >).

1.2) What information is contained in this FAQ?

Anything that I, as the author of this FAQ, decided would be of
interest to people who are interested in the community of Yolo County,
California. See PREFATORY QUESTIONS (Section 0) for more information.

1.3) How is this FAQ organized?

This FAQ may be arbitrarily divided into unequal parts where I felt it
was convenient to do so. I did this for two reasons. The first
reason is that some readers of this FAQ may have specific questions
and may not want to read the entire FAQ. If this version of this FAQ
is comprised of more than one part, the first part will contain the
complete TABLE OF CONTENTS. Thus, readers may refer to the TABLE OF
CONTENTS to find out which part of the FAQ contains the specific
questions that they want answered. Second, some computer services and
applications are unable to handle extremely large computer files. If
this version of this FAQ is comprised of more than one part, no one
part will exceed 32k. See the TABLE OF CONTENTS in this FAQ for more
detailed information about how the contents of this version of this
FAQ are organized.
This FAQ uses standard Uniform Resource Locator (URL) protocol
references to accomodate readers with a web browser:

<ftp://[ftp site][directory][archive] > = file transfer protocol

<gopher://[gopher address] > = gopher protocol

<http://[World Wide Web address] > = hypertext transfer protocol

<mailto:[e-mail account]@[domain] > = SMTP e-mail protocol

<news:[newsgroup or article reference] > = USENET protocol

<telnet:[telnet site] > = IP telnet protocol

These URL references will act as hyptertext links for those using
Netscape to read this FAQ on the USENET newsgroups or are reading a
hypertext version of this FAQ.

1.4) How can I obtain this FAQ? [Rev]

This FAQ is archived at rtfm.mit.edu in the pub/usenet/news.answers
directory under the archive name yolo/faq/part* (where * = 1 through
6) and is available by anonymous ftp and e-mail request. See Section
5.2.3.1 for more information on ftp and e-mail request. This FAQ is
updated monthly and the most current version is posted to news.answers
(<news:news.answers >) and yolo.general (news:yolo.general); a
hypertext version of this FAQ is available at the USENET FAQ project:

<http://www.dcn.davis.ca.us/~netesq/USENET-FAQs/davis/faq.html >

Snail-mail requests for the most recent offline version of this
FAQ (Version 21Jun96) will be honored within the United States (U.S.),
if those requests are accompanied by $5.00 in U.S. funds, in the form
of a check or money order for each copy of this FAQ requested to cover
the cost of printing, shipping, and handling; volume discounts and
licensing agreements are available. At my discretion, I may ship a
more recent offline version of this FAQ unless you specify otherwise.

The Yolo County, California USENET FAQ Part 2 of 3

Frequently Asked Questions about Yolo County, California
(c) Copyright 1995 & 1996 by David F. Prenatt, Jr.

2) FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT VISITING YOLO COUNTY. [Rev]

Those visitors to Yolo County who intend to visit the City of Davis or
U.C. Davis should refer to the Davis USENET FAQ and/or the U.C. Davis
USENET FAQ (see Section 1.5 for more information on how to obtain
these FAQs). Readers with a web browser may wish to visit the Yolo
Online Home Page on the World Wide Web:

<http://www.mother.com/yo/yolo1.htm >

2.1) What reasons would someone have for visiting Yolo County?

Most people who visit Yolo County have friends, family, or business in
the area, as Yolo County is a fairly obscure and sparsely populated
region of Northern California, best known as the home of U.C. Davis.
However, Yolo County also contains a number of other small communities
and is the center of the multi-billion dollar California tomato
industry. See Section 2.6 for more information about Yolo County
commerce.

2.2) Where is Yolo County and how do I get there?

Yolo County borders Sacramento County, which lies east of Yolo County.
Depending upon where you begin your trip and what part of Yolo County
you are trying to reach, you could take one of a number of highways.
Interstates 5 (I-5), 80 (I-80), and 505 (I-505) form a triangle that
bisects the borders of Yolo County, and Hwy 113 runs north and south
connecting I-5 (which runs northwest and southeast) with I-80 (which
runs east and west).

2.3) Where can I get something to eat in Yolo County?

See Section 3.6.2 for a list of restaurants in Yolo County.

2.4) Where can I find lodging in Yolo County?

Depending upon what part of Yolo County you plan to visit, you have a
number of options for temporary lodging. If you are visiting Davis,
you may wish to refer to the Davis USENET FAQ (see Section 1.5 for
information on how to obtain the Davis USENET FAQ).

2.5) What sort of recreation and entertainment is available for visitors
to Yolo County?

[See Section 3.6.1 for more information about recreation and
entertainment in Yolo County.] According to the erudite Robert
Schulz, the Cache Creek Casino in Capay Valley is operated by the
Wintun tribe, one of the all but extinct groups of "California
Indians". According to my resource books, however, the Wintun is not
properly considered a tribe, but rather a dialect group of the
Penutian language family of aboriginal California. Speakers of the
Wintun dialect include the closely related Wintu, Nomlaki, and Patwin.
The Patwin were the most recent aboriginal inhabitants of Yolo
County prior to the Gold Rush, but many of the remaining "California
Indians" such as the Patwin have organized with other Native Americans
and organized into larger political groups to preserve their sundry
cultures and obtain greater influence (e.g., the aforementioned
"Wintun tribe"). Gaming is one of the most profitable industries for
groups on Indian reservations in California, as casino style gambling
is not legal anywhere else in the state. To reach the Cache Creek
Casino, drive west on Highway 16, which runs through the city of
Woodland as Main Street and intersects I-5, Hwy 113, and I-505:

Drive until you're sure you've hit the end of the world.
Drive further still. There, you will find Cashe[sic] Creek.
Can't miss it. Big, funky building in the middle of nowhere.

Mike Lewis (<mailto:mi...@larry.utah.com > posting on ucd.life
(<news:ucd.life > Message-ID: <461k13$b...@larry.utah.com>).
Driving along Hwy 16 West from Woodland, you will pass the towns
of Madison, Esparto, and Capay west of I-505. On the outskirts of
Capay, you will find the Cache Creek Casino. A Las Vegas casino it is
not. It has bingo, slot machines, blackjack and other card games; it
does not have craps, roulette, or complimentary cocktails. A quaint
place to gamble in the middle of nowhere.

2.6) What sort of commerce is there in Yolo County?

The multi-billion dollar California tomato industry, an agribusiness
that dominates 90% of the national tomato market, is centered in Yolo
County. There are also a number of small businesses that operate out
of store front malls and a smattering of other larger commercial
enterprises. Readers with a web browser may visit the Woodland
Chamber of Commerce Home Page on the World Wide Web:

<http://www.mother.com/yo/wcham/wcham1.htm >

2.7) What sort of transportation services are available to and in Yolo
County?

Yolobus provides bus service to and in Yolo County from the
neighboring county of Sacramento and Citylink provides bus service

Greyhound and Amtrak also maintain stations in Yolo County. Ten
commercial airlines also service the Sacramento Metropolitan Airport
which borders Yolo County to the east.

2.7.1) How far is the Sacramento Metropolitan Airport from Yolo County and
how do I get there?

The Sacramento Metropolitan Airport is located about a mile from the
border of Yolo County, on the outskirts of Sacramento County. Most of
the populated regions of Yolo County are closer to the airport than
are the populated regions of Sacramento County. Take I-5 South (which
is actually eastbound) to the airport. You can't possibly miss the
airport.

2.7.1.1) Where should I park at the Sacramento Metropolitan Airport?

Short term parking is usually available near the terminal of your
airline for 75 cent for the first half hour, $1.50 per hour to a
maximum daily rate of $10; long term parking is $1.50 per hour up to a
maximum daily rate of $5. Circle around the airport once before
parking to make sure that you know where you are going once you park.

2.7.1.2) Is there an airport shuttle service from Yolo County to the
Sacramento Metropolitan Airport?

Yes. The Davis Airporter has 24 hour service to the Sacramento
Airport from all areas in and around Yolo County (reservations are
required). Contact the Davis Airporter at (916)756-6715 for more
information. [Note: Other companies provide shuttle service to the
Sacramento Airport, but I have not had occasion to use them.]

2.7.1.3) Where can I get more information about the Sacramento
Metropolitan Airport?

Call the Metro's BeeLine at (916)552-5252 or write:

Department of Airports
6900 Airport Blvd
Sacramento, CA 95837

3.6.2) What kinds of restaurants are there in Yolo County? [Rev]

For such an obscure rural county, Yolo has a surprisingly large number
of very good restaurants. I have included a partial list here of the
ones that I and/or my friends frequent and enjoy, but this list is far
from exhaustive. See the phone book for a complete list or visit the
following URL on the World Wide Web:

<http://www.bizline.com/restauratns/area/area5.html >

3.6.2.1) Davis.

See the Davis USENET FAQ for a list of restaurants located in Davis

3.6.2.2) West Sacramento.

I have received the following recommendations via e-mail for

Brooks, Capay, Esparto, Madison, Dunnigan, Zamora, Yolo, Knights
Landing, El Macero, and Clarksburg.]

3.6.2.6) Recommendations from the Yolo County USENET.

On November 24, 1994, Steve Cantrell began the thread, "Good Eats in
Yolo County," on the yolo.life newsgroup (<news:yolo.life >),
recommending (among others) two restaurants that I have not had a
chance to sample (Message-ID: <3bfr27$i...@mark.ucdavis.edu)>:

* Best Mexican Food: Jody's (in Woodland)
* Best French Food: The Crepe Bistro (Davis)

On November 29, 1994, Cyndie Alvarez Necoechea stated, "You should
also try Vincents on Main Street. Great Margaritas!!!" (Message-ID:
<Pine.SOL.3.91.941129151455.28922A-100000@dale>). On December 2,
1994, Lisa Nishikawa recommended Osaka Sushi as the Best Japanese
(Message-ID: <3bmkip$7...@mark.ucdavis.edu>). On December 11, 1994,
Frank Digenova recommended Noodle Express for Chinese food. And on
December 25, 1994 Lois Richter offered (Message-ID:
<3dkf71$n...@pa.mother.com>):

the only other place to come close to [Morrison's Upstairs]
recently was the 'St Pauli Hotel' restaurant on Hiway50
(before Kyburz), which serves extremely good German-style
food.

In a separate post on the same day, Ms. Richter also offered the
following recommendation (Message-ID: <3dkj40$n...@pa.mother.com>):

[A]dd CHINA HOUSE (F st, near 3rd, Davis) for good
all-around Chinese dishes and several great house
specialties (my favorite is "China House Lettuce Chicken" --
sort of like mushu pork with lettuce instead of crepes and
chicken instead of pork and a FINE plum sauce!)

Please note that I have edited the information above so that it
should only include recommendations that I have not personally sampled
and/or from people for whose taste I cannot vouch. Also note that
this information does not include cumulative recommendations or a
tally of votes; noticeably missing from most of these recommendations
are the addresses and phone numbers of the establishments.
