I've been playing backgammon for about half a year now but it's time to
learn some strategy. Does anyone know of a simple to follow (diagrams?)
book that offers some great tips for the novice? I remember reading about
the all-time best book for backgammon in this forum but didn't write the
name of it down at the time and also that book may be a little advanced for
me. Thanks for any help you can give...

Simon.

The name of the book is "Backgammon" and it was written by Paul Magriel. I
have a copy available to sell.

Hi Leslie,

I'm interested to know how much you're asking for your copy of
Backgammon by Paul Magriel. I'm interested in purchasing it.

Hi Simon,

That book most mentioned here is Backgammon by Paul Magriel, it's excellent,
often referred to as "The Bible of Backgammon". You can get a soft-cover
copy from the GamesGrid Boutique at
http://www.straight8.com/gg.boutique for $45.00 U.S.

I recently picked up Backgammon-Winning Strategies by Robin Clay here in
Montreal at a Chapters Bookstore for $18.99 Canadian dollars. It says on the
back cover "Winning Strategies is for the player with a basic knowledge of
the game who wants to improve their skills and enjoy the taste of victory."
It has a section on every stage of the game: opening, middle and end game
race, and another on timing, semi-back and back game. There are a few other
sections as well, but I think the last one is what you're looking for:

The 100 Question Quiz.

This section has 100 illustrated position problems with multiple choice
answers for each. You take your choice and then check out the analysis of
each move on the opposite page. It's made in a fun way because you score
points for each problem along the way.

Have fun Simon and good luck to you,

Michael

As other readers have said, Magriel's book is an absolute MUST for anyone
seriously interested in backgammon. However, the one that helped me most
when I was at the stage you are now is BACKGAMMON FOR PROFIT by Joe Dwek.

This book uses a series of problems that help you define priorities and
develop your strategy accordingly. I don't know how available this book is,
but if you go to http://www.netcologne.de/~nc-bergerfr/ , you can download
a program called BGBlitz and the problems in Dwek's book, plus problems
taken from books by Tim Holland and Kit Woolsey.

These databases have updated the problems from the Dwek and Holland books by
evaluating them using Jellyfish, so you have the original plays by the
experts, plus analysis using current technology.

I believe you will find this to be a terrific tool in developing your game.

I too recommend both these books. I think Dwek is more advanced than
Magriel, and is a good stepping stone to Robertie's Advance Backgammon. I
found a 2nd hand copy of Dwek from www.abe.com
