I have a server side application that generates an HTML table with content
type ""application/vnd.ms-excel".
(I'm testing with Office/97.)

The browser displays it correctly within the browser window (as an add-in)
on some machines but opens a separate full-function excel application
(window) to display the speadsheet on other machines.

I would like to know why it behaves differently. I like the "add-in"
version because it looks great but the excel menu bar is missing and that
sucks because we can't save the speadsheet as a .xls or access any other
formating options to modify the data.

Can I get the menu bar to show inside the browser like adobe acrobat (.pdf)
does?
Can I force the browser to open the excel application instead of the add-in.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Please e-mail me.

Thanks,

This is a registry setting applicable to the browser, ie you can tell the browser
whether or not to open apps inside it. So it's not really in your control.

Here is the "fix" for Internet Explorer

* Double-click My Computer.
* On the View menu, click Options (or Folder Options).
* Click the File Types tab.
* In the Registered File Types box, click the specific Office document type (for
example, Microsoft Excel Worksheet), and then click Edit.
* In Internet Explorer 3.01, 3.02, or 3.02a, click the Open Web Documents In
Place check box to clear it. In Internet Explorer 4.0, 4.01, or 5, click the
Browse In Same Window check box to clear it.

Great, thanks!

I wish Microsoft would make the add-in fully functional: include its menu
bar, etc., in the browser so that we could "save as" a .xls etc.
