THE NEW GUY
A film review by Steve Rhodes
Copyright 2003 Steve Rhodes
RATING (0 TO ****): ** 1/2

Bilge Ebiri's THE NEW GUY is an intriguing black comedy of the OFFICE SPACE
genre that rapidly descends into a Kafkaesque thriller. Although its sagging
middle spoils the story some, don't make the mistake of giving up on it before
the ending. With its last minute twist within a twist, it will have you and
your companions arguing for hours afterwards on what it means. The director,
who was at our screening, offered his own interpretation and mentioned the
Russian movie that influenced the conclusion.

Gregg (Kelly Miller) -- "That's with three 'g's." -- is a shy guy who tries his
best to get everything right. A new guy at a company about to go through
another round of layoffs, he isn't sure why he was hired in the first place.
When he finds out the answer, he wishes that he hadn't asked. Frank, the last
guy who had Gregg's clerical position, is in jail. It seems that he killed
somebody in the office with his stapler. After hearing this, Gregg notices that
the big stapler in his cubicle, which is Frank's old cubicle, has blood on it.
Certain other events that first day on the job convince him that strange things
may be happening in his office during the night.

Gregg accidentally gets himself locked in after his first day on the job.
Suffice it to say that, after seeing THE NEW GUY, the next time you need to work
late at the office, you may choose to take your work home instead. It's safer.
It's a lot safer.

THE NEW GUY runs 1:24. It is not rated but would be an R for some violence and
would be acceptable for teenagers.

The film is being shown as part of San Jose's Cinequest Film Festival
(www.Cinequest.org), which runs February 27 to March 9, 2003.
