Kevin Susman's PAPAL CAB is an exhilarating and zany short film. Since New
Yorkers are both busy and religious, what would be more natural than a
confessional cab? Father Carlos (Carlos Alazraqui) runs just such a vehicle. A
van with religious icons, a cross on top and holy water on tap, it offers an
efficient confession and a fast ride.
"I don't know how to say this," Richard (Eric Lutes), the passenger admits to
his confessor. "Meter's running, pal," the good father reminds him. Father
Carlos, normally a mild mannered man, or as mild mannered as a NYC cabbie ever
gets, does sometimes lose his cool. When some older folks amble through the
crosswalks, he yells at them, "Hey, what are you waiting for -- the second
coming?"
A fast-paced and good-spirited comedy, PAPAL CAB keeps the audience in stitches
right through the ending credits which poke fun at those silly celebrity
announcements popular in NYC cabs.
PAPAL CAB runs 0:12. It is not rated but might be PG for some language and
would be acceptable for kids around 9 and up.
The film is being shown now as part of San Jose's Cinequest film festival
(www.Cinequest.org).
