3D Rage XL w/ flat-panel

I've got a sun blade 100 w/ what atyfb reports as a 3D Rage XL. it's
attached to flat-panel (ViewSonic VG800). it works fine in console,
but in X gives a blank screen w/ absolutely _no_ error messages.
check logs, everything. fwiw, xf86cfg can't even get a picture up.

a regular crt works fine. is this a known problem? what is happening
(or not happening)?
i'm running debian unstable, 2.4.19-sun4u w/ XFree86 4.2.1.
