Section I: About XENA: WARRIOR PRINCESS
-----------------------------------------------------------------

QUESTION I.1
~~~~~~~~~~~~
How did the show get its start?
ANSWER I.1
~~~~~~~~~~
Xena was introduced as a character in an episode of HERCULES: THE
LEGENDARY JOURNEYS in the 1994-5 season (the first season). Lucy
Lawless played an evil warlord who decided she needed to take out
Hercules before she could conquer the territories he normally
protected. So she pretended to be a maiden in distress, seduced
Iolaus into joining her army, and nearly tricked him into killing
Herc (and Iolaus had a good shot at killing his friend).

The name of this episode was "The Warrior Princess".

Although there was nothing redeemable about Xena's character, the
fans loved her and demanded to see her again. The show's
producers brought Xena back for two more (back-to-back) episodes
that season. Hercules and Xena were brought together as allies
by Salmoneus to fight Darphus, Xena's former lieutenant who had
taken over her army. They destroyed the army and Xena decided to
reform herself.

These episodes, forming a two-part story, were called "The
Gauntlet" and "Unchained Heart"
-----------------------------------------------------------------

QUESTION I.2
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Where and when is the show available?
ANSWER I.2
~~~~~~~~~~
Xena is now available in most (but possibly not all) cities in
the US and Canada via broadcast stations. It is now being
broadcast in New Zealand and over 85 other countries.

The USA Cable Network also shows episodes of the series on
Sundays.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

QUESTION I.3
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Okay, so what can you tell me about the main character, Xena?
ANSWER I.3
~~~~~~~~~~
The following is a composite description based on two documents
at the official MCA website (http://www.mca.com/tv/xena/). It
also contains other information gathered from assorted sources
including the show itself.

Xena was a peasant girl from Amphipolis, a village in Thrace. Her
parents are named Atrius (we think) and Cyrene. She has an older
brother, Toris, and a younger brother, Lyceus. Atrius was
impersonated by Ares in the episode "Ties That Bind" when he
tried to get Xena to serve him again.

Raiders attacked her village, killing her younger brother,
Lyceus. Since no one else would stand up to the raiders, she
learned the arts of war, built an army, and defeated the raiders.
To make sure no one would be able to attack her village again,
she conquered the surrounding lands. Eventually, she began
fighting for no more than love of power, and her ruthless army
caused her name to be held in fear by the known world.

Then she ran across Hercules. See Question #1 above.

Xena is capable of amazing skills in the arts of combat and
warfare. It is not clear where and how she received this
training, but to defeat her foes, she uses strategy, agility,
acrobatics, martial arts, and several weapons. Most often we see
her with her sword and chakram, a razor sharp discus-like weapon.
She is skilled in the use of pressure points and has been known
to carry a whip. All in all not a woman to be trifled with!

Xena also has a son named Solan. Solan's father was named
Borias. Dagnine, one of Xena's warriors, murdered Borias. Xena
gave the infant Solan to a centaur named Kaleipus to raise as his
own son.

Many of the answers to Xena's origins are answered, at least in
terms of how she became an evil warlord in the second season's
two-part episode "Destiny" and "The Quest".
-----------------------------------------------------------------

QUESTION I.4
~~~~~~~~~~~~
What can you tell me about Gabrielle?
ANSWER I.4
~~~~~~~~~~
Gabrielle comes from a walled village of simple people,
Poteidaia. Gabrielle's parents are both alive, as well as Lilla,
her sister.

Xena saved Poteidaia from destruction by the forces of Draco. It
was one of Xena's first "village" rescues after her conversion to
good. Gabrielle wanted to go with Xena to lead a "more exciting
life" and gradually insinuated her way into Xena's company.

Gabrielle is a talker. She has turned this into a skill and is
quite a storyteller. She has earned money as a bard and even won
the right to study at the Academy for Performing Bards. She
turned it down to "live the stories" with Xena. Originally
Gabrielle had no fighting skills, but in the "Hooves and Harlots"
episode she became an "Amazon princess" and chose to learn the
staff as her primary weapon.

Gabrielle and Xena are now "the best of friends" in the highest
and best ways that we can understand this phrase. Gabrielle also
plays an increasing role in helping Xena to see the good and the
light in all they encounter.

Gabrielle was engaged to a farmer named Perdicas when she met
Xena. He showed up later in the "Beware Greeks Bearing Gifts"
episode as an officer in the Trojan Army.

In "The Return of Callisto", Perdicas tracked down Xena and
Gabrielle. He asked Gabrielle to marry him and when she saw how
sickened he was by killing she consented. Callisto killed
Perdicas in an attempt to draw Xena into a final confrontation.

Perdicas was played by Anotn Bentley in "Sins of the Past", but
he was played by Scott Garrison in "Beware Greeks Bearing Gifts"
and "The Return Of Callisto".
-----------------------------------------------------------------

QUESTION I.5
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Are there any other reoccurring characters?
ANSWER I.5
~~~~~~~~~~
Marcus (Bobby Hosea):
A mercenary companion from her dark days, Marcus encounters
Xena (this is the first time the fans meet him) in "The Path
Not Taken". He obviously feels strongly for Xena. At the
end of this episode Marcus is turning to the "good" -- but
is killed. We meet up again with Marcus in "Mortal
Beloved". Xena travels to the underworld to help Hades get
things in order again. Marcus is temporarily brought back
to life to help.

It is in this episode that Xena and Marcus express their
love for each other. The end of this episode is VERY
powerful.

Salmoneus (Robert Trebor):
Salmoneus is everyone's favorite travelling salesman. He is
always looking for a quick way to turn a buck -- or in this
case, a dinar. He is not very strong or very brave, but has
proven trustworthy when it counted. Salmoneus considers
himself a good friend to both Xena and Hercules (especially
when he's in trouble!) and they find it hard to stay
irritated with him for long. He went from being strictly
comic relief, to being many viewers' favorite reoccurring
character.

Robert Trebor reprised his role as Salmoneus on X:WP in the
second season despite rumors to the contrary. He was in,
"Here She Comes ... Miss Amphipolis." Meanwhile, the
character of Joxer has been added to fill the comic relief
role the character of Salmoneus performed.

Ares (Kevin Smith):
Ares is the God of War, a major hunk. Ares wants nothing
more than for Xena to lead his armies and go back to her
good old villainous warlord days. He posed as her father in
"Ties That Bind" trying to manipulate her. Watch out. Ares
shows up again in "The Xena Scrolls," wherein the God of War
finds himself locked in a tomb in 1942 with a descendent of
Xena's. Ares later persuaded the Furies to punish Xena for
the death of her father in the episode "The Furies". Ares
might (or might not) be Xena's father.

Kevin Smith also plays Hercules' brother, Iphicles, in
HERCULES: THE LEGENDARY JOURNEYS.

Charon (Michael Hurst):
Under all that make-up it is Michael Hurst (whom we all know
as Iolaus in H:TLJ) playing this hilarious role. Charon's
job is to carry the dead across the River Styx, but Xena and
Hercules have both crossed when they were still alive and
didn't even pay the customary coin! Listen to Charon's
constant muttering and occasional song -- he is wonderfully
funny!

Autolycus (Bruce Campbell):
The wily, the charming, the borderline egomaniac...yes...the
one, the only, King of Thieves. Autolycus is basically a
good guy. He is always trying to look out for number one,
but has shown himself to be a valuable ally to both Xena and
Hercules on separate occasions. He might even have a light
crush on Xena. A skilled thief and fighter Autolycus
succeeds in being both charming and humorous.

Autolycus appears on XENA: WARRIOR PRINCESS in "A Royal
Couple of Thieves", "The Quest", "King of Assassins",
"Tsunami", "Vanishing Act", "A Key To The Kingdom" and
"Takes One To Know One".

Hades (Erik Thomson):
Hades is the God of the Underworld. The character comes off
as being pretty wimpy for a god. Both Xena and Herc have
had to help him out. The best thing about Hades (other than
the actor playing this role) is that he seems to
admire/appreciate Xena.

Joxer (Ted Raimi):
A wanna-be warrior who first appeared in "Callisto," this
character reappears most often in the series. Appearing in
about 30+ episodes so far. For more information about Ted
Raimi, visit (http://www.tedraimifan.com)

Cyrene (Darien Takle):
Cyrene is Xena's mother. She appeared in "Sins of the
Past", the series opener, and now also has appeared in
"Intimate Stranger", "The Furies", "It Takes One To Know
One" and "Lyre, Lyre".

Aphrodite (Alexandra Tydings):
The Goddess of Love, last made an appearance in X:WP in the
episode "Punch Lines" (she was a popular regular on H:TLJ).
Aphrodite is a self centered and somewhat spoiled and vain
god, who has been known to turn the head of every man who
sees her.

Cupid (Karl Urban):
Unlike the valentine's day version of Cupid, the Cupid that
appears in both X:WP and H:TLJ is an adult with a bad five
o'clock shadow (he needs a shave). Cupid is married to a
mortal who was made into a god by Aphrodite in a H:TLJ
episode. Cupid also has a son called Bliss, who caused all
sorts of love problems in "A Comedy of Eros". Karl Urban
also plays Julius Caesar in "Destiny", "The Deliverer",
"When in Rome", "A Good Day" and "Ides Of March". Karl also
played the character Mael in "Altared States".

Eli (Timothy Odmunson)
We first saw Eli, as a street magician in "Devi", but he's
more than a magician. He's actually the Avatar (a
manifestation of a god), whose main goal was to spread a
message of love to the world.

Some of the villains have recurring roles, although they may not
appear in more than two episodes. Myzantius was an arms merchant
in "The Path Not Taken". He was brought back for an "alternate
reality" check in "Remember Nothing" along with "Krykus", the
evil warlord from "Hooves And Harlots". "Mortal Beloved" had
several men whom Xena had killed in previous episodes.

Callisto (Hudson Leick):
Callisto has appeared the most often of Xena's villains
(except for Ares): "Callisto", "The Return of Callisto",
"Intimate Stranger", "Ten Little Warlords". Hudson really
played Xena-in-Callisto's body in most of "Intimate
Stranger" and all of "Ten Little Warlords". Lucy played
Callisto-in-Xena's body in "Intimate Stranger". We think a
body double for Lucy played
Callisto-in-Xena's-body-in-Tartarus and
Xena-with-Gabrielle-on-the-beach in "Ten Little Warlords".

Callisto also makes an appearance on H:TLJ during it's third
and fourth season. Callisto has since been several episodes
of Xena including "The Furies" (briefly), "Maternal
Instinct", "Bitter Suite", "Sacrifice I", "Sacrifice II",
"Ides Of March", "Fallen Angel" and "Seeds Of Faith". And
the H:TLJ episodes "Surprise", "Armageddon Now : Part 1" and
"Armageddon Now : Part 2". Hudson also plays the part of
Liz Friedman, in the H:TLJ episodes "Yes Virginia, There Is
A Hercules", and "For Those Of You Just Joining Us". For
more information on Hudson visit
(http://www.hudsonleickfan.com)

Hope (Renee O'Connor):
Hope is Gabrielle's daughter. Hope was conceived when
Gabrielle was impregnated whilst she was on the altar of
Dahok in "Deliverer". After a very short pregnancy and
birth, a 'Knight of the Pierced Heart' died under suspicious
circumstances. Xena suspecting Hope wanted to kill her, but
Gabrielle set her free (al la Moses).

Hope was alleged to be a force for evil in the world and has
appeared in "Gabrielle's Hope" and "Maternal Instincts".
She's also appeared in the H:TLJ episodes "Armageddon Now :
Part 1" and "Armageddon Now : Part 2". She was last seen in
"Sacrifice I", "Sacrifice II" and "A Family Affair", in all
of which, she had taken on the appearance of her mother,
Gabrielle.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

QUESTION I.6
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Where does XENA: WARRIOR PRINCESS take place?
ANSWER I.6
~~~~~~~~~~
The official MCA website (http://www.mca.com/tv/xena) says that
X:WP is: "...set in the 'Golden Age' of myth, long before ancient
Greece or Rome, on the distant frontier of known civilization far
away from the land of mighty Hercules".

**BUT** there is also this information that was taken directly
from Arbiter's original FAQ. (Special thanks to
rca...@indirect.com for the following information):

X:WP is set in Ancient Greece - but they do move around...

Lacking graphics for a map, think of the ancient Greek world as
an upside-down "U". The left leg represents the Greek peninsula,
and the right leg represents Asia Minor (currently Turkey) --
number and letters are included as very rough guides.

For reference:
Athens is a little north of (1)
Sparta is a bit southwest of (1)
Troy is in the neighborhood of (7)
Xena was born in Amphipolis (5)

What happened to her between her leaving Amphipolis, and her
resurfacing in the Hercules episode "The Warrior Princess" is a
little vague. We do know that she fought many wars in or around
Corinth (1-inland) which is in Arcadia (A/1) -- including one
against the Centaurs ("Hooves and Harlots"). This placing of the
centaurs is a little odd being that the centaurs are from the
state of Thessaly (3).

We first meet Xena somewhere around Hercules' hometown of
Thebes(2), and from there she takes Iolaus to Arcadia before
Hercules ruins her plans.

Soon after she turns to good, Xena returns to Amphipolis. Since
Gabrielle followed her, presumably mostly on foot, Gabrielle's
home village can't be too far away from Amphipolis. It is
certainly no farther away than Thessaly (3/4).

In "Death in Chains", X & G are once again in Corinth (1-inland),
where Sisyphus is King. In the next episode shown, X & G are in
the realm of the Amazons (east of G).

However, since Centaurs are nearby, it implies they are still
near Corinth, or possibly now somewhere in Thessaly -- maybe this
is a rogue group of Amazons....

Other observations include:

In "Orphan of War" we learn that Xena's army fought a second
group of Centaurs led by Kaleipus. On that occasion she had been
seeking the Ixion stone, a Centaur relic which possessed all the
evil of their race.

In "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" we learned that Xena's army fought
Bacchus and was apparently almost wiped out (and yet she seems to
have won the battle).

For an extensive examination of Xena's history, review the
"History of Xena", available on the web
(http://www.xenite.org/xenahist.htm).
-----------------------------------------------------------------

QUESTION I.7
~~~~~~~~~~~~
When (in history) does X:WP take place?
ANSWER I.7
~~~~~~~~~~
The official MCA website (http://www.mca.com/tv/xena/) says that
X:WP is: "...set in the 'Golden Age' of myth, long before ancient
Greece or Rome..."

**BUT** there is also this information that was taken directly
from Arbiter's original FAQ. (Special thanks to
rca...@indirect.com for the following information)

The time frame is difficult to pin down since the series presents
contradictory material.

Since so much iron is used in weapons (we'll assume it's iron and
not steel), the time can't be significantly earlier than about
150BC -- as that is the time when iron started being produced in
quantity.

The latest historical reference made in the series so far (Dec.
1995) was in the episode "Death in Chains", where there is
mention of Sophokles (496-406 BC). This places the series
probably no later than about 380 BC

There are several mentions of heroes of the Trojan War (e.g. in
"The Reckoning"), and this places things sometime after c.1184 BC
(the traditional date of the end of the Trojan War).

We could be comfortable with this except for one thing: Herakles
(Hercules) is computed as dying some 79 years before the start of
the Trojan War -- and obviously Xena and Gabrielle are
contemporaries of the legendary hero. This places the time
period somewhere between 1300-1250 BC

At of this writing, if we ignore the Sophokles reference, the
series probably takes place sometime between 1300-850 BC

Other observations include:

Not to get to technical, but the writers of X:WP have now thrown
in Julius Caesar and a holiday episode which appears to portend
the birth of Christ. Suffice it to say, Xena goes where Xena
wants to, and it doesn't matter what time line we go by.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

QUESTION I.8
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Does X:WP jibe with "traditional" mythology and actual history?
ANSWER I.8
~~~~~~~~~~
In some cases yes and in many cases no. Read the two answers
above this (I.6 and I.7), and you will understand. The show
plays around with actual places, events, people, and myths, but
the producers, writers, etc., choose to be bound to or by them.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

QUESTION I.9
~~~~~~~~~~~~
How is X:WP like HERCULES: THE LEGENDARY JOURNEYS, and how is it
different?
ANSWER I.9
~~~~~~~~~~
This is VERY rudimentary -- any helpful rephrasing, comments,
suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

How the shows are alike....
1. The characters know each other and "exist" in the same time
frame.
2. Each show incorporates mythological tales/concepts. Both
have a primary star/character who roams the countryside
righting wrongs with their best friend, who usually travels
with them. Xena and Herc are both capable and accomplished
fighters who are brave and true.
3. By the way have you noticed that both Iolaus and Gabrielle
are shorter, more light-hearted/carefree, and of lighter
complexion than Herc and Xena?

How the shows are different...
1. Let's get the obvious out of the way: Hercules and Iolaus
are very male. Xena and Gabrielle are unquestionably
female!
2. Hercules is half god. Xena (as far as we know) is not.
3. Xena is much more the warrior -- complete with armor and
weapons.
4. Herc is in lots of fights, but he doesn't seem to
"enjoy"/revel in it as much as Xena does. (Although more
and more it seems Xena is trying to avoid unnecessary
confrontations.)
5. Xena usually kills or maims a minimum of 2-3 people per
show. (Note: There is an apparent decrease in this kind of
behavior in the 2nd season.) Hercules will knock a half
dozen heads together but seldom actually kills or seriously
wounds anyone.
6. Xena rarely takes on monsters. She focuses on warlords.
Hercules usually takes out the monsters, gets embroiled with
the gods, and generally deals with situations where mortals
(except for Xena) are outclassed. Xena DID defeat a very
nasty Titan, and she and Herc together helped to free
Prometheus. As noted above, she has also gotten involved
with Ares and Hades a few times.
7. She definitely has a dark and horrible past/side that she is
trying to live down and deal with. Herc has had some bad
things happen, but *he* has always been a good guy. I think
that it is this darkness, their very different pasts, that
helps the writers to create the distinct
tones/moods/environments that makes the two shows more
different than I have been able to put into words here.
8. Finally, the sidekicks differ tremendously. Iolaus is a
warrior and hunter. Gabrielle is just learning to find her
way through the world but is trying NOT to become a warrior.
The Gods took Iolaus down a notch on a couple of occasions
because of his tremendous ego. Gabrielle has not developed
that problem.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

QUESTION I.10
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Where is X:WP filmed?
ANSWER I.10
~~~~~~~~~~~
It is filmed on location in and around Auckland, New Zealand.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

QUESTION I.11
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Do X:WP and H:TLJ share the same writers and production team?
ANSWER I.11
~~~~~~~~~~~
No. There is very little crossover, same company with different
staffs.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

QUESTION I.12
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Was there ever a real Xena?
ANSWER I.12
~~~~~~~~~~~
Do you mean a person who actually lived "way back when" with the
name Xena? Who knows? Do you mean a female warrior whose life
resembles *our* T.V. Xena in some way? No. The T.V. Xena is not
based on historical accounts and/or myth.

"Xena" resounds in the souls of her fans. There is something
there we recognize and gravitate toward. The strength, the
courage, the beauty, the challenge of righting your past
misdeeds, the struggle to trust and care, Lucy Lawless and the
whole production team bring to us these things, and it appeals to
us in a way that goes beyond the sum of the parts.

So yes, we like to "pretend" that Xena existed and still does in
many of us.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

QUESTION II.1
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What is the purpose of alt.tv.xena?
ANSWER II.1
~~~~~~~~~~~
This is a news group dedicated to the discussion of the
television show XENA: WARRIOR PRINCESS and related topics.

XENA: WARRIOR PRINCESS is an hour-long action-adventure series
exclusively distributed in syndication in the United States by
MCA TV and internationally by MCA TV International. It premiered
the week of September 4, 1995 as a spin-off of the successful
HERCULES: THE LEGENDARY JOURNEYS series.

"...[it] combines mythology with martial arts action, big-screen
special effects and spectacular New Zealand scenery..." -- from
the official MCA Web site (http://www.mca.com/tv/xena/)

"Surrounded by enemies, barbaric tribes, slave traders, and a
host of other evils, Xena is on a mission to help people free
themselves from tyranny and injustice." -- from the official MCA
Web site (http://www.mca.com/tv/xena/)

QUESTION II.2
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What sort of stuff should I post to this news group?
ANSWER II.2
~~~~~~~~~~~
You are welcome to post any article dealing with any aspect of
the show, its characters, its actors or the production company,
related topics (such as ancient history and mythology), books,
magazines, newspapers that concern the show or its actors, and
information about the production company, fan activities and
interests, and things like that. Such articles should be in
plain text whenever possible, as not all readers can read content
rich (or HTML) articles.

Although you'll see disagreements here (and the occasional flame
war), people sometimes will try to calm things down by quoting
Xena: "Be Niiice!" It's good advice. There's no reason to go
ballistic just because someone else doesn't share your opinion.
But that's your choice to make.

Posts about the "Jack Of All Trades", and "Cleo 2525" shows are
also allowed here, until they get newsgroups of their own.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

QUESTION II.3
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What sort of stuff should I NOT post to this news group?
ANSWER II.3
~~~~~~~~~~~
Most articles are forgivable unless they are :-

1. Multi-Level Marketing (MLM) posts of any kind. Also known
as Make Money Fast posts (MMF).
2. Advertising or Spam, of any kind, unless it relates to
either X:WP, or it's actors. Such adverts should be as
short as possible, and posted once per vendor per week.
3. Binaries, (which can be either pictures, programs, sounds,
or compressed archive files) of any kind.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

QUESTION II.4
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What happens if I post something I shouldn't?
ANSWER II.4
~~~~~~~~~~~
You may get flamed. But in general people at ATX are friendly
people. However, you are bound to catch someone who is having a
bad day.

But if you post the pyramid scheme, people may complain to your
ISP, even if you try to fake your account, and you may lose your
account for that reason (but that's between you and your
provider).

Some unscrupulous people may mail-bomb you by sending your
article right back at you 1000 or 10,000 times. Or they may
subscribe you to many mailing lists, rendering your account
unusable. THESE ARE NOT PROPER RESPONSES TO USENET ABUSE, but
they can happen and we cannot prevent people from declaring war
on you.

If you've read this far into the FAQ and you post one of the
above articles anyway, you're on your own and you'll get no
sympathy from the rest of us.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

QUESTION II.5
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Okay, but what if I want to post binary files SOMEPLACE?
ANSWER II.5
~~~~~~~~~~~
Hey, binary files are welcome on the Usenet! Just make sure you
post to one of the "alt.binaries..." news groups. Then post an
announcement here in alt.tv.xena telling us where to look. The
news group alt.binaries.multimedia.xena-herc exists specifically
for X:WP and H:TLJ binary posts. However, some ISPs do not carry
the newsgroup.

It is okay to cross-post to several binary groups, especially if
their names are in the alt.* hierarchy, since no alt.* group is
guaranteed to be carried by all servers (in fact, NO news group
is guaranteed to be carried by all servers). In practice, it's
better to cross post than to post to individual groups because
cross posting saves space. Posting the same article to many
different groups is called "spamming" and is frowned upon.
However, do not cross post binary files between binary and
non-binary news groups.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

QUESTION II.6
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Why is posting a binary file to a non-binary news group such a
problem?
ANSWER II.6
~~~~~~~~~~~
Some sites have limited resources and carry only a limited
selection of binary news groups. If binary files are posted to
non-binary news groups, the only ultimate recourse the system
administrators have is to stop carrying non-binary news groups
with excessive binary file postings.

Other reasons include :- That not every person who reads ATX, has
unlimited toll-free time to download 50k+ binary posts. Most
people outside of the US (for example those in the UK and
Europe), are charged for net usage by the second. Some ISP's
also automatically block binary posts in non-binary groups, so a
lot of readers won't see your picture anyway.

There is a much better option available for sharing your Xena
pictures: the World Wide Web! Binary news groups have short
expiration periods because their articles take up so much disk
space. Web pages that you design and own on the other hand, have
NO expiration periods.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

QUESTION II.7
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What if I accidentally post something I don't want to?
ANSWER II.7
~~~~~~~~~~~
Don't panic. Your newsreader should have a CANCEL POST option
somewhere. Just RELOAD OLD ARTICLES or CHECK NEW ARTICLES
without leaving the news group in your reader. You should see
the article come up. Just select the article and then pick
CANCEL POST. Your newsreader will send out a cancellation
advisory that may prevent your server from sending the article
out. Your server will propagate the cancellation advisory if
your article has already been sent out, so chances are no one
will ever see the article if you cancel it quickly. It should be
noted however, that many ISP's no longer honour cancel requests,
due to wide scale abuse.

CompuServe and AOL users don't presently have the option to
cancel their posts.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

QUESTION II.8
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What are "spoilers" and "spoiler space"?
ANSWER II.8
~~~~~~~~~~~
A "spoiler" is an article posted by someone about an episode they
have seen or know about. X:WP is shown world-wide, at different
times in the various national and international markets,
sometimes upto 18 months after the episode was originally shown
in the US. Also, some people with satellite dishes pick up the
feed to the affiliates as much as two weeks in advance of the
first airdate in the US.

Out of consideration and respect, for other Xenites who want to
see the episodes before they read about them, those people who
have seen them should not put plot points in the subject of their
articles. They should add <Spoiler:Episode Name> to the
article's subject line, and then fill the first 20 to 25 lines
(called "Spoiler Space") of the article with either carriage
returns or some message warning inattentive readers that details
concerning a potential spoiled episode follow. It's also, not a
good idea to remove "spoiler space", if your post still contains
"spoilers".

These guidelines are not rules, but it is considered good
netiquette to follow them. You'll probably get reminded to use
'spoiler space', by other posters if you don't follow these
guidelines.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

QUESTION II.9
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What is a "Xenite"?
ANSWER II.9
~~~~~~~~~~~
If you love and watch the show, you are a Xenite. When the fans
were debating what to call themselves, "Xenite" had some close
competition from "Xenaphile", but Xenite won out.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

QUESTION II.10
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I'm a new poster/reader of ATX, Is there anywhere where I can
aquaint myself with the conventions of the newsgroup"?
ANSWER II.10
~~~~~~~~~~~~
There is a webpage called ATX Central, devoted to most things
Alt.tv.xena related. It has links to some posters homepages,
Abbreviations and terms used in the group. And there is also a
bulletin board. The webpage,
(http://www.lavhouse.com/atxcentral_ontheweb), also has a link to
the web version of this FAQ.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

QUESTION II.11
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What is the deal with the "6. There is no number 6"?
ANSWER II.11
~~~~~~~~~~~~
If we're all sitting comfortably then I'll begin: once upon a
time the BBC used to broadcast a series called 'Monty Python's
Flying Circus' (a comedy) and in one program a short sketch was
performed in which an Englishman was introduced to his new
professorial colleagues in the Philosophy Department at the
'University of Wollomoloo' in Australia. At one point the
departmental rules were read to the group, including "Rule Six:
There is NO rule Six!".

Since lots of people posting to ATX are either fans of MPFC or
are familiar with it, the 'no rule six' rule is often used in
lists.

Videos of MPFC can be checked out of some public libraries, and
rented. Plus, there are the full-length videos: 'MP and the Holy
Grail' (there's a CD game based on this too) and 'Life of Brian'.

Any websearch utility will find huge numbers of Python sites with
scripts, .WAVs, pictures and words of the many songs. The most
interesting sites, to me, are in England, Australia and Iceland.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

QUESTION II.12
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What's this <OT> <P> and <SP> all about?
ANSWER II.12
~~~~~~~~~~~~
We like to think that we talk about Xena, all the time. However
from time to time various posters to the newsgroup, will post
articles that are not entirely to do with Xena. Out of courtesy
to those people who do not want to read these types of articles,
the subject of the article is usually 'tagged' with <OT> for Off
Topic, <P> for Pirate (A role-playing group based in Alt.tv.xena)
and <SP> for Space Pirate. <P> and <SP> are not so often used
nowadays. But you can still read about their exploits on Deja
News (http://www.deja.com)

Articles flagged with these 'tags' are likely to have almost
anything going on in them. The article's subject should be an
indicator of what the article is about, and should be changed if
the content varies from the subject. You are still advised to
proceed at your peril :D
-----------------------------------------------------------------

QUESTION II.14
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What do "Flaming" and "Flame War" mean? What can I do about it?
ANSWER II.14
~~~~~~~~~~~~
From time to time, some of the posters to ATX might have a
disagreement with what another poster has written, and will post
a strongly worded reply, which appears to be attacking that
poster personally. This is called "Flaming". When several
people are engaged in this practice, it is commonly referred to
as a "Flame War".

The best thing to do, if a "Flame War" breaks out, is to ignore
the posters concerned. You can do this by using your newsreader
to set a 'Killfile' or 'Newsgroup Filter' on the posters
concerned, or by marking "Flame" threads as read.

What you should not do, is reply to a "Flame" post, as this will
escalate the problem further out of control. If you *have* to
say something to one of the posters, it is far better if you
e-mail them personally, to save wasting newsgroup bandwidth. It
is not recommended to continue the "Flaming" on ATX or to
re-direct the "Flames" to *ANY* other newsgroup. By doing so,
you will be encouraging more newsgroup readers to get involved in
the "Flaming", which is not what readers of ATX would like to
see.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

QUESTION II.15
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I just read a post I thought was abusive, either towards me or
another person. What can I do about it?
ANSWER II.15
~~~~~~~~~~~~
You do have a couple of options here. You can attempt to reason
with the poster concerned, in the hope of their changing the tone
of their posts. You are better off doing this via e-mail. You
can also do this via the newsgroup. But if you do, you might be
risking a "Flame War" breaking out, or making one in progress
worse.

Another option is to forward the entire post, complete with it's
headers to the abuse department of the posters ISP. You should
point out what you feel is abusive about the post, but NOT
recommend a course of action. You can be accused of attempting
to commit a 'Denial of Service' attack otherwise.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

QUESTION II.16
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What is Net Abuse and where can I learn more about it?
ANSWER II.16
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Net Abuse refers to any of several generally disapproved
practices. The practices include the use of fake addresses (not
screen names -- as long as email can reach you, screen names are
okay), posting the same article to multiple news groups (this is
called "spam"), cross-posting off-topic articles to multiple news
groups, posting crude and malicious articles (such as defaming
Jesus in a Christian news group, or telling C programmers that
BASIC rules -- these are called "trolls"), or posting the same
article dozens of times, etc.

It is common to see "fake" addresses on articles. As long as the
people posting the articles mind their manners otherwise, no one
really cares what they call themselves. But using a fake address
may be a violation of your ISP's guidelines and service
agreement. And if you try to hide behind a faked address in
order to flame someone, there are usually people who can track
you down from the information contained in the headers of your
articles, so you aren't likely to get away with anything.

The worst offenders are the trolls, the illegal pyramid schemes,
and heavily cross-posted off-topic articles. In some cases you
can complain to an offender's ISP and that service provider will
send out a cancellation message that kills the thread on all the
machines where it's propagated (well, most of them).

There is also a group of volunteer system administrators who
regularly browse news groups on a random basis and send out
cancellation advisories, usually just to remove binary files, but
also to get rid of "spam" articles. These folks will post an
advisory article telling the appropriate news groups what they
are doing and why. Their activities are accepted Usenet practice
and they come as close as anyone to being monitors for Usenet
traffic.

There is a FAQ on net abuse that discusses many aspects of good
and bad Usenet behavior. It also outlines accepted responses
used in handling abusive articles, and explains why other
practices (such as posting follow-up articles) are discouraged.

The Net Abuse FAQ is posted regularly to
news.admin.net-abuse.misc and to news.answers. The Net Abuse FAQ
explains where and how to report net abuse or suspected abuse.

The net abuse newsgroup maintains several FAQs. The ATX FAQ is
not guaranteed to reflect the current views and information
provided in the net abuse FAQs. The reader is therefore advised
to retrieve the current Net Abuse FAQs for more current and
detailed information about net abuse.

A master HTML version of the net abuse FAQ may be useful
(http://www.cybernothing.org/faqs/net-abuse-faq.html).
-----------------------------------------------------------------

QUESTION II.17
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Is Alt.Tv.Xena moderated or censored in anyway?
ANSWER II.17
~~~~~~~~~~~~
ATX is an unmoderated forum. This means that if you post to ATX,
your post isn't read by someone who can say whether or not it's
allowed to be posted. *Anyone* is free to post about whatever
they want, (provided what they post isn't a spam, abusive in
someway to another person, or a binary post), however the poster,
should expect follow-ups from other posters, who might not share
their opinion. If you post a 'spam' or binary to ATX, it will
most probably be cancelled, and abusive posts will probably be
reported. But other than this, no posts are actually cancelled
because of their content.

QUESTION IV.1
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Where did the title Warrior Princess come from?
ANSWER IV.1
~~~~~~~~~~~
According to one of the producers who posted on the mailing list
(Chakram), it was a name given to her by her troops, having been
a woman successful in battle, but not quite the equal of Ares,
God of War. People still refer to her that way because that is
the way she was always referred to. It's almost like part of her
name now. When asked if she was Xena the Warrior Princess, Xena
herself responded that some people call her that. The upshot is
that it is a title accorded her by her deeds, not an inherited
familial title. At least as far as we know at this point!

An additional comment from Lucia... "Warrior Princess?... I loved
what someone once said: 'Well, Warrior Village Girl just isn't
very impressive!'"

In the episode "The Debt Part I" however, it is revealed that she
was given the title Warrior Princess by her mentor Lao Ma. It is
speculated that Borias brought news of the title from China with
him, and so Xena became known as the Warrior Princess.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

QUESTION IV.2
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Wait a minute: is Gabrielle an Amazon Princess, Amazon Queen, or
a bard?
ANSWER IV.2
~~~~~~~~~~~
She has gone from Princess to Queen and will always be a bard.
Gabrielle is a bard by nature -- a talker, a storyteller, and she
became an Amazon Princess when she tried to save the life of a
true (born with that title) Amazon Princess in the episode
"Hooves and Harlots". The character bestowed her rank, and all
that went with it, on Gabrielle just before she died. So...
Gabrielle, agreed to the girl's last wish, not realizing what the
girl's title/rank was until it was too late.

From this point on, we see Gabrielle in "amazon clothes", with an
"Amazon necklace" -- sometimes, and carrying a staff given to her
by Ephiny. She learned the art of wielding a staff during her
stay with the Amazons.

In "The Quest" and "A Necessary Evil," Gabrielle became the
official Amazon Queen, but she left Ephiny as Queen in her
absence, while she continues to travel with Xena.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

QUESTION IV.3
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Where did Gabrielle's Amazon stuff go?
ANSWER IV.3
~~~~~~~~~~~
That's a good question. Since even the new shows have not always
been shot in the order they were released, there have been some
inconsistencies. The staff (with the eagle/bird head) that
Ephiny gave to Gabby is most noticeably absent. She carries a
different staff now and doesn't even always have that around.
(Unless of course, you subscribe to the theory that the
eagle/bird head is removable -- and so it *IS* in fact the same
staff...) Where she keeps her staff was partially resolved in
the episode called "The Greater Good". It seems that the staff
is collapsible and is carried in Argo's (Xena's horse's)
saddlebags. The necklace must be somewhere in safe keeping along
with the eagle/bird head.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

QUESTION IV.4
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What can you tell me about Xena's horse, Argo?
ANSWER IV.4
~~~~~~~~~~~
Earlier in the show there seemed to be some confusion as to
whether Argo was male or female. After a post to the mailing list
from Avicus (a person who works on the show) *and* with the
episode "The Greater Good", it was made clear that Argo is a
mare, in the show as well as real life. Somewhere along the line
someone said that her real name was Daisy, but no, that is Lucy's
daughter's name. Argo's real name is Tilly.

Now is that clear? Yes -- clear as mud -- because as another fan
(Penthesilea) pointed out..."In Sins of the Past", "Dreamworker",
and "Death Mask", Argo is referred to as "he" *AND* seems to be a
lighter color!

So! We know that a mare named Tilly (not Daisy) plays Argo. But,
is there another horse (a male) that also plays Argo from time to
time?

Yes. To add just a bit more confusion, at the (Jan 99) Burbank
convention, when the producers were asked why Gabrielle doesn't
ride a horse, the response was 'because of the cost'. In
actuality, it takes three horses just for Xena. To give
Gabrielle her own horse, it would require another three horses.

After Lucy's accident, she had been a little gun shy about
getting back on a horse. In many of the late Season 2 episodes,
Argo is missing or it's a stunt double that is riding Argo.

QUESTION IV.5
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Why doesn't Gabrielle have a horse?
ANSWER IV.5
~~~~~~~~~~~
Well, it probably had to do with the fact that it is the XENA:
WARRIOR PRINCESS show not the X & G show. Gabrielle started out
as Xena's tag-along, not an equal. They even made it clear that
Gabby didn't like horses. There have also been several fan
discussions regarding Gabby's apparent fear of heights. The
thought being that it may not be so much that Gabby doesn't like
horses, as much as the fact that she doesn't like tall horses.
Remember the comment Gab made that went (something) like this?
"When they make them [horses] closer to the ground..."

Things are changing though. In "The Greater Good", Gabrielle and
Argo "make friends". Gabrielle finally confesses to Xena that
she had once had a pony, which died, and after that time she was
uncomfortable around horses and ponies.

In "A Solstice Carol" Gabrielle acquires a donkey, but she ends
up giving the animal away to a couple with a child.

In "For Him The Bell Tolls," Gabrielle is forced to dismount Argo
(she was riding behind Xena) and stay behind when Xena goes off
on some mysterious mission, giving Gabrielle and Joxer a show of
their own.

For the reality-based reason why Gabrielle didn't have a horse,
see Question IV.4.

In an online chat RJ Stewart (One of Xena executive producers)
said that they were looking to give Gabrielle a horse in Season
5, and we see this coming to pass in the Season 5 episode "Animal
Attraction".

QUESTION IV.6
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Is the chakram -- Xena's round killing thing -- a real weapon?
ANSWER IV.6
~~~~~~~~~~~
Kind of. It is derived from an item found in India.

From Jessica:
The chakram was indeed a weapon used by the Sikhs of northwest
India.

And from Linda Gaunt:
"Chakram or war-quoit, a thin, razor-sharp steel ring, once the
characteristic weapon of the Sikhs. The chakram is said to have
been thrown by being whirled around the index finger before
release." WEAPONS, New York, St Martin's Press, 1990, p. 81

Other information:

A long and wonderful article about chakrams was posted to
alt.tv.xena in early 1996. Check Deja News if you're spinning in
circles because you need to know more.

An alternative method of using the chakram was to whirl it around
a pole. This would give it greater spin than whirling it around
a finger (and would hurt less).

In theory, a chakram could be bounced off walls, but in practice
it was not used in any way like Xena uses her weapon. Xena's
chakram exploits are pretty much fantasy.

In "The Xena Scrolls" we learn that the chakram, broken in half,
is the key to releasing Ares from his tomb. The chakram must
bounce off the eye of Hephaestus to allow Ares to leave. When
the chakram is "made whole" with a "Shazaam" from Mel (Xena's
descendent), the spirit of Xena enters her descendent and Xena
appears in 1942. In the episode "Chakram", we learn that Xena
has been using the 'Dark' Chakram all these years after Ares (or
even Xena) grabs it from a temple. Xena has now also got the
'Light' Chakram, and has combined the two to make a stronger more
powerful weapon.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

QUESTION IV.7
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What is up with the opening scene with Xena and Poseidon? Did I
miss this episode?
ANSWER IV.7
~~~~~~~~~~~
No. This was shot for the opening sequence only. Poseidon has
appeared in two episodes so far, "Ulysses" and "The Lost
Mariner." The footage used in both those episodes is new
footage, but the general look of the god has remained the same.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

QUESTION IV.8
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Who is that long-haired person Xena approaches in the opening
credits?
ANSWER IV.8
~~~~~~~~~~~
The shot referred to here, is shown just after the shot where
Xena rises sensuously from a bed, and the narration is saying,
"...The PASSION..."

The person whom Xena is approaching is Draco, a warlord she had
known in her earlier days. The scene is taken from "Sins of the
Past".

Not asked as frequently is the question about whom Gabrielle hugs
a little later on. This is also a scene from "Sins of the Past"
where Gabrielle bids her sister Lila farewell before setting out
in pursuit of Xena.

QUESTION IV.10
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Where can I find episodes summaries?
ANSWER IV.10
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Commonly regarded as *the* best website for episode summaries,
cast information, airdates, ratings info, etc. is the WHOOSH! web
site (http://whoosh.org/epguide/index.html).

A.J. (aka Blue...@aol.com) and Xorys are guest writers for the
episode guides at WHOOSH!, complete with misspelled words and
incorrect guesses as to producers' intentions. You can also find
spoilers for most episodes on Deja News (http://www.deja.com) and
in ATX also.

You can also check out Buumzer's XENA: Warrior's Princess Vault
(http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/Hills/4958/xena.htm).

QUESTION IV.11
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What are the "disclaimers" in the credits at the end of the show?
ANSWER IV.11
~~~~~~~~~~~~
People with really good eyesight will have noticed some funny
stuff in the closing credits. This 'disclaimer' usually appears
just after Alex Beaton's (the Supervising Producer for Action
Pack) name.

All of the disclaimers are available at either
(http://www.bigfoot.com/~p.hilling/atx-faq-6.htm) or
(http://members.xoom.com/AtxFAQ/atx-faq-6.htm). They can also be
found, alongside the episode summaries on the Whoosh website
(http://whoosh.org/epguide/).
-----------------------------------------------------------------

QUESTION IV.12
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Why were there so many Joxer episodes early in the second season?
ANSWER IV.12
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Because Lucy Lawless (Xena) had an accident that kept her from
filming, shows which were not supposed to air until later in the
year were shown ahead of schedule. See also Question IV.14.

Joxer, played by Ted Raimi, was selected to replace Salmoneus,
played by Robert Trebor, as the comic relief character for the
second season. Because it is so expensive to fly people to New
Zealand from the United States, Ted Raimi and Hudson Leick were
flown to New Zealand to film all their episodes in a block.
Joxer was scheduled to be shown in 1/3 of the second season
episodes (8 of 24).

Because of Lucy's hip injury, the airdate schedule had to be
altered while she recovered. Hence, Joxer dominates guest
appearances for the first part of the second season.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

QUESTION IV.13
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Did Xena really murder Callisto?
ANSWER IV.13
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Yes. She admitted to this while in Tartarus, in "Intimate
Stranger". Xena did not give her reasons for committing the
murder.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

QUESTION IV.14
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Why was Hudson Leick playing Xena in "Intimate Strangers" and
"Ten Little Warlords"?
ANSWER IV.14
~~~~~~~~~~~~
As previously noted, Lucy Lawless was seriously injured while
performing for a skit on "The Tonight Show" on October 8, 1996.
At the time of her injury, Lucy had already completed filming for
ten episodes:

"Orphan of War"
"Remember Nothing"
"The Giant Killer",

"Girls Just Wanna Have Fun"

"The Return of Callisto"
"Warrior...Princess...Tramp"
"Intimate Stranger"
"A Solstice Carol"
"The Xena Scrolls"
"The Execution"
"The Price"

Although there has been no official confirmation from MCA about
how the shuffling was handled, consensus among the fans, based on
comments made by MCA/Universal and some of the show's staff, is
that "Ten Little Warlords", already written, was altered to be a
"sequel" for "Intimate Stranger". Hudson and Renee were
immediately flown back to New Zealand to re-film the end of
"Intimate Stranger" to provide a "bridge" to the new episode.

"Ten Little Warlords" was then inserted into the airdate schedule
and reruns of earlier episodes were scheduled. Bruce Campbell
was also flown to New Zealand to reprise the role of Autolycus,
the King of Thieves, in at least two episodes.

QUESTION IV.15
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What are the words to Joxer's song.
ANSWER IV.15
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Here are the words to just one of the versions of Joxer's song.
Joxer sang this version of the song in "For Him the Bell Tolls".

Joxer the Mighty,
He roams through the countryside;
He never needs a place to hide.
With Gabby as his sidekick
Fighting with her little stick,
Righting wrongs and singing songs,
Being mighty all day long,
He's Joxer...he's Joxer the Mighty!
Ohhhh..... He's Joxer the Mighty,
He's really tidy.
Everybody likes him
Because he has a funny grin.
Joxer the Mighty,
He's very tidy.
Everyone admires him.
He's so handsome it's a sin.
If you're in jeopardy
Don't call the cavalry.
There's a better remedy
(Although he doesn't work for free).
He's every man's trusty,
He's every woman's fantasy,
Plus he's good company.
He's Joxer...
I'm Joxer the Mighty!
Blood...valor...and victory!
Ha-ha! Joxer the Mighty,
He's very tidy.
Everyone admires him.
He's so handsome it's a sin.
When things get grim
He'll take it on the chin.
If you're in jeopardy
Caused by the enemy
Don't call the cavalry.
There's a better remedy
(Although he doesn't work for free).
He's every man's trusty,
He's every woman's fantasy,
Plus he's good company.
Look out!
He's Joxer...
Joxer the Mighty!

Depending on your definition of characters, Lucy also played 2 of
the "3 Faces of Fate" in the episode "Solstice Carol"
-----------------------------------------------------------------

QUESTION IV.17
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I've just seen this musical episode called "Bitter Suite". What
was going on?
ANSWER IV.17
~~~~~~~~~~~~
This episode is part of the resolution of the "Rift" arc of
stories. The "Rift" started with "Deliverer" and include
"Gabrielle's Hope", "Debt Part 1", "Debt Part 2", "Maternal
Instinct" and "Bitter Suite".

"Bitter Suite" has a lot of symbolism in it. Mostly to do with
imagery from the Rider-White set of Tarot cards. A more in depth
article on this imagery is available
(http://www.heckman.net/erin/bstarot.htm).

The lyrics to "Bitter Suite" also help in understanding the
episode. (http://www.heckman.net/erin/bslyrics.htm).

QUESTION IV.18
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I just saw "Sacrifice Part 2", or "Ides Of March", and I'm
worried if there's a next season?
ANSWER IV.18
~~~~~~~~~~~~
As is traditional in other television shows at the end of a
season's run, TPTB at X:WP, have decided to end Season 3 and
Season 4, on what is called 'a cliffhanger'. Whilst it is true
that something happened to a couple of the major characters, in
both the episodes mentioned. Be rest assured both Lucy and Renee
*ARE* continuing filming the next season.

QUESTION III.1
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What can you tell me about Lucy Lawless, the actress who plays
Xena? (Info, Bio, and Fan Clubs)
ANSWER III.1
~~~~~~~~~~~~
A more detailed biography is available at the MCA website
(http://www.mca.com/tv/xena).

Birthday: March 29, 1968
Birthplace: Mt. Albert, Auckland, New Zealand
Eye Color: Blue
Hair Color: Honey Blonde
Height: 5'10 1/2" (According to Lucy)
Significant Other: Married to Robert Tapert. Exec Producer of
Xena

I know there is more info out there, but here is some to get you
started...

Lucy Lawless is the fifth of seven children and is the oldest
girl. Lucy got involved in acting and singing early on in school
musical and plays in what was mostly a convent education. She
graduated at the age of 17 and attended Auckland University
briefly, but soon left for Europe and went grape picking on the
Rhine. Following that Lucy even worked in a gold mining camp, in
Australia! In Australia she married and then returned to
Auckland.

Lucy has one daughter, Daisy, born in 1988-9. And a son, Julius
Robert Bay Tapert born on the 16th Oct 1999.

For those of you who haven't heard Lucy speak in interviews, her
natural voice doesn't sound very much like Xena. She definitely
has a New Zealand accent, and her voice is not nearly so deep.

Lucy has a natural aptitude for languages and accents that
enables her to sound southern Californian. Check out her David
Letterman interview, or see other interviews at Tom's Xena Page
(http://www.xenafan.com).

You'll find lots more info and get to actually hear her speak!

Yes, Lucy dyes her hair black for the show. You can see her
natural hair in "Hercules and the Amazon Women". Look for an
Amazon on a horse. She's also the one who horses around with Zeus
(played by Anthony Quinn).

QUESTION III.3
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Has Lucy Lawless always been a martial artist and/or naturally
athletic?
ANSWER III.3
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Lucy learned some basic kung fu moves, sword, and staff work from
Douglas Wong in a brief visit to Los Angeles in 1995. MCA says
"Though she had practised yoga for some time, Lucy had no special
training in martial arts, sword play, or stunt work when she
landed the role of Xena." The MCA site goes on to say that she
did have some experience riding horses as a teenager. Lucy
herself though is quoted in the Starlog Yearbook (1996) as being
bemused at landing such a physical role. That in school her
nickname was Unco -- short for uncoordinated! She says that she
is warming up to that aspect of the role and really enjoying it.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

QUESTION III.4
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Do the actresses do their own stunts?
ANSWER III.4
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Lucy herself has said "If you don't see my face, there's a good
chance it isn't me doing the stunt". Stunt double are used for
the gymnastic and more difficult horseback riding scenes. Lucy
in particular is doing more and more these days. Enough, as one
of the people involved with the show said, to be quite impressive
and make one occasionally a little nervous.

Lucy was injured on October 8, 1996 while filming a skit for THE
TONIGHT SHOW. She was riding a horse across a parking lot in
full Xena gear. The horse, though shod for pavements, slipped
and fell. So, Lucy HAS been doing some of her stunts, but that
changed a bit after her accident. Lucy had said on ENTERTAINMENT
TONIGHT (in January 1997) that she would return to doing her own
stunts, but at her own pace.

The show was changed due to Lucy's accident. The ending for
"Intimate Stranger" was re-written so that "Ten Little Warlords"
could immediately follow that show, even though it was not
scheduled for filming. Another obvious change is "The Quest,"
which features Bruce Campbell as the King of Thieves. In "The
Quest," Xena invades The King of Thieves mind. Lucy has only a
very small role in "The Quest."

It's also noticeable in some already-aired episodes, such as
"Intimate Stranger" that the actresses are sometimes placed in
wire harnesses which enable them to do some of the terrific flips
and rotations the show is so famous for. In other cases stunt
doubles appear to be doing the work.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

QUESTION III.5
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What can you tell me about Hudson Leick? (Callisto)
ANSWER III.5
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Xenites have generally fallen in love with Hudson. Although most
prefer to keep Lucy in the title role, many hope to see Hudson
again in future episodes of XENA: WARRIOR PRINCESS, and some hope
she eventually gets her own show.

Her "real" name is Heidi Leick (pronounced Like). She changed her
stage name to Hudson. As Hudson said in an interview, Heidi
Leick sounded too much like the name of a porn star.

She is really a brunette.

Xenites have reported seeing Hudson episodes of "Law and Order",
"Melrose Place", and "University Hospital". She was on a couple
of episodes of "Touched By An Angel" in February, 1996.

Check XENA ONLINE RESOURCES for a list of web sites that are
either devoted to Callisto/Hudson or at least include her. You
can find XENA ONLINE RESOURCES
(http://www.xenite.org/xenaonln.htm). Hudson's fan club also
maintains a popular website (http://www.hudsonleickfan.com).
-----------------------------------------------------------------

QUESTION III.6
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What about Kevin Smith? (Ares)
ANSWER III.6
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Kevin Tod Smith is a native New Zealander, born March 16, 1963 in
Auckland.

He was in a band named "Say Yes to Apes" from 1983-1986, playing
the only guitar in the band and singing lead. The band made 3
albums and had a loyal following, but he qualifies his music as
being "very underground".

Kevin also played rugby for a period of time for various teams.
However, he suffered an unfortunate head injury which ended his
rugby career. He has held a great variety of jobs.

He met his lovely wife Suzanne in 1979 when he was just 16 years
old. They were married in 1986 and have three handsome young
sons, Oscar (born in 1991), Tyrone (born 1993) and Willard (born
Oct 97).

Suzanne is largely responsible for getting Kevin started in
acting. She signed him up for an Elvis impersonator contest in
1987. "It was actually a touring musical play about Elvis called
'Are You Lonesome Tonight'," he says. "I auditioned for the
'young Elvis' role. I got to be his understudy (I played JoJo the
bodyguard). The play collapsed in financial and artistic ignominy
in my hometown of Christchurch....excellent!!!" After this Kevin
went on to play several roles in New Zealand television, stage
and film, including Othello, Arsenic and Old Lace, Desperate
Remedies, City Life, and Marlin Bay, for which he was awarded a
New Zealand Film and Television Award for Best Supporting Actor
in 1995.

Thanks to Suzanne's efforts and Kevin's hard work and talent, we
now get to see him on a regular basis as "Ares" in Xena: Warrior
Princess and as "Iphicles", Hercules' half-brother in Hercules:
the Legendary Journeys.

QUESTION V.1
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Are there other online resources for Xenites?
ANSWER V.1
~~~~~~~~~~
Check out the XENA ONLINE RESOURCES website
(http://www.xenite.org/xenaonln.htm). This site offers one of
the most complete listings of all online resources. XOR lists
web pages, news groups, mailing lists and other assorted online
resources, organized by subject and with short descriptions.

For immediate online gratification, good places to start are
(http://www.xenafan.com). (http://whoosh.org),
(http://www.xenamedia.com) and also (http://www.ausxip.com).
-----------------------------------------------------------------

QUESTION V.2
~~~~~~~~~~~~
I am an aspiring actor/actress -- how can I get on the show?
ANSWER V.2
~~~~~~~~~~
Sorry, there are no shortcuts. Xena: Warrior Princess is a show
like any other in this regard. Get an agent (if you don't
already have one), and have your agent contact Renaissance
Pictures at Universal Studios.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

QUESTION V.3
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Are any of the episodes available for purchase on tape?
ANSWER V.3
~~~~~~~~~~
The Xena Trilogy from Hercules ("Warrior Princess", "The
Gauntlet" and "Unchained Heart") was released to shops early in
1998. Tapes of Season 1, and also Season 2 episodes, were
available from GetXena. Rights have since passed to Davis/Panzer
(http://www.adarastore.com/cgi-bin/xena-herc/) But it should be
mentioned that Davis/Panzer will probably only ship tapes to
US/Canadian addresses. You can also ring Davis/Panzer to get a
catalog by calling 1-800-382-6074 and order other merchandise by
calling 1-800-835-9689.

TV movies of Hercules are also available on tape with Xena stars
in them. They include "Hercules & The Lost Kingdom", in which
Renee O'Connor co-stars. And "Hercules and the Amazon Women", in
which Lucy Lawless plays one of the Amazon women. "Hercules and
the Maze Of the Minotaur" (which features clips of both Lucy and
Renee), has been released in the UK on tape.

There are rumours of Hercules and Xena episodes appearing on DVD,
but none have been appeared as yet. UK readers should have DVD's
of Season 2 episodes from April 2000.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

QUESTION V.4
~~~~~~~~~~~~
"The Xena Scrolls": where can I find them and are they real?
ANSWER V.4
~~~~~~~~~~
You used to get the Xena Scrolls from the MCA website
(http://www.mca.com/tv/xena). They were not real in the sense
that they are not true historical documents. They were created
in conjunction with the show, and they were a blast to read.
Definitely go check them out, if they are still there.

The Xena Scrolls will make much more sense to you after you've
seen "The Xena Scrolls," in which Lucy and Renee act as the
descendants of Xena and Gabrielle, respectively.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

QUESTION V.5
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Can I get copies of any of the scripts from past episodes?
ANSWER V.5
~~~~~~~~~~
At one time scripts were being sold by a store in Hollywood, CA,
but it has reportedly stopped such sales at MCA's direction.

Now though, several scripts from Season's 1, 2, 3 and 4, have now
been officially released. These scripts include those from the
episodes "Dreamworker", "Promethius", "A Day In The Life",
"Destiny" and "The Quest". The newer scripts also contain an
exclusive photo from the episode concerned. There are now nearly
2 dozen scripts available now, and more are going to be
forthcoming in the near future.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

QUESTION V.6
~~~~~~~~~~~~
I have an idea/script for the show -- where should I send it?
ANSWER V.6
~~~~~~~~~~
Sorry, even for us die-hard Xena fans there are no shortcuts.
XENA: WARRIOR PRINCES is a show like any other in this regard.
Get an agent (if you don't already have one), and have your agent
contact Renaissance Pictures at Universal Studios.

A *real* agent will know how to submit a script or script idea to
the right people. However, if you're serious about trying to
become a Hollywood writer, go to your local library and check out
the reference section's books on writing and getting published.
Look at WRITER'S MARKET. Heed their advice. Don't hope for
miracles.

If you try to get an agent, you should at least have some idea
how to put together a script (and WRITER'S MARKET really is not
an adequate tool for learning the appropriate skills, but it's
better than nothing).
-----------------------------------------------------------------

QUESTION V.7
~~~~~~~~~~~~
What is the deal with all the sound *WHOOSH* effects?
(Additional Information -- pay close attention the next time Lucy
or Renee whips their head around while looking for bad guys --
especially in first season episodes; also, when Xena and Cinteres
face off in "The Royal Couple Of Thieves")
ANSWER V.7
~~~~~~~~~~
They are part of the special sound effects that are used to
emphasise certain actions. It seems that they are used way too
much in some episodes, but hey that's just my opinion. (Original
FAQ.) The sound effects and the basically bloodless fight scenes
have caused some people to describe the production as a
"mythology meets Hong Kong" mix.

The sound effects are sometimes used to enhance the campiness of
the show. The "Imperial Tie Fighter" sound is often used when an
arrow is fired at one of the main actors.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

QUESTION V.8
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Is there a Xena soundtrack CD?
ANSWER V.8
~~~~~~~~~~
There are currently 4 Xena soundtrack CD's. CD#1 was Released
November 19, 1996. CD#2 was Released November 19, 1997. A 3rd CD
with the music from the musical episode in Season 3 "Bitter
Suite" was released on March 24 1998. This was followed on June
1st 1999, with CD#4. All 4 titles are available on CD only.

There is also a Hercules/Xena CD-ROM by Software Sculptors. You
may see references to this product. It is NOT one of the
soundtracks.

It's been reported that a CD by the Bulgarian Women's Choir has
chants which sound very much like the Xena chants. Joseph Lo
Duca (the musical director for H:TLJ and X:WP) has reportedly
denied any direct connection with that collection.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

QUESTION V.9
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Can you give me more information about the first CD?
ANSWER V.9
~~~~~~~~~~

mailing list by Pat Casciano <pcas...@niagara.rivier.edu>:

that:

First, the Bulgarian:

Jenata iazdi samotna

Napraite put na voina!

The Warrior Princess rides alone
Her past drives her from shame
Against the forces of a dark world
She fights for good, not for fame.

"Make way the Warrior! Cheer!"
Drums beat a rhythm
Let villains beware
The Warrior Princess is here!

QUESTION V.13
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Why weren't "M'lila's Song" and "Bacchae Rap" on the Xena CD #2?
ANSWER V.13
~~~~~~~~~~~
The problem with both of these songs is that Jo LoDuca DIDN'T
write them. And therefore he didn't have the copyright on them.
So when it came to preparing the CD. Varesse Sarabande used
songs/tracks that were not to difficult for them to use, or
obtain permission to use.

As all the tracks on the 2nd CD are written by Jo himself
obtaining permission from him is easy. When you attempt to get
permission from a third party band, you get into contract
negotiations, and this would have delayed the 2nd CD's arrival.
So rather than this Varesse Sarabande dropped those two songs.

For those people disappointed that the M'lila song wasn't on the
CD it has been reported that M'lila's song is actually on another
CD.

Kaboom <kab...@wwnet.com>, writes "The CD in question, is called
Mouth Music by the group, Mouth Music. It's apparently on the
Rykodisc label. Catalogue # RCD 10196. M'lila's song is track
#10, and is actually called Fraoch a Ronaigh. And on the CD is
sung by Talitha Mackensie."

"Fraoch a Ronaigh"'s English title is "Heather of Rona". And is
3:15 minutes long. It says this on the inside by the song: The
song describes several points on the island of North Uist, which
could be used as landmarks by sailors passing along the west
coast.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

QUESTION V.14
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Who sung for each character in the musical episode "Bitter
Suite"?
ANSWER V.14
~~~~~~~~~~~
Most people will have noticed that not all the actors did their
own singing during the episode "Bitter Suite". Lucy Lawless,
Kevin Smith, and Ted Raimi all sung their own parts. However
Renee's part was sung by Susan Wood. And Hudson's parts was sung
by Michelle Nicastro. Not so widely known is that the part of
Hatred in "Hate Is The Star" was sung by Phil Marcus Esser.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

QUESTION V.15
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What can you tell me about the music that is used in the various
episodes?
QUESTION V.18
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I can't find any Xena trading cards... what's up?

QUESTION V.20
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What about other Xena merchandise?
ANSWER V.20
~~~~~~~~~~~
Due to the ever increasing popularity of the show, it has become
impossible for the FAQ to remain current with all of the
merchandise. If you are looking for merchandise, try the XENA
ONLINE RESOURCES website (http://www.xenite.org/xenaonln.htm) for
more information. There is an entire section of XOR devoted to
connecting Xena fans with merchants.

QUESTION V.21
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What time is Xena on?
ANSWER V.21
~~~~~~~~~~~
Without telling us where you are, it's a little difficult, to
tell you when local stations are showing Xena. If you are in the
US/Canada, you are far better off going to
(http://www.clicktv.com) or (http://www.tvguide.com) Both sites
enable you to enter your Zipcode (US/Canada only). And then tell
you when Xena is on locally. If you don't live in the US/Canada,
please tell us where you are, and someone should be able to
answer you.
