hello,
I recently installed sco os5.0.4. I must have missed the part of the install
that partitions the filesystem. now I have one huge / partition.
I tried to use divvy to divide this partition. it appears that I was
successful in creating a /u filesystem. however it does not show up when I
type df or mount
/dev/u. I still see the large / filesystem.

any suggestions?
thank you.

First, you WERE NOT successful in using divvy in that mannner- even though it
appears that you were. What you've done is royally screwed up your root file
system.

Put it back as it was, and then read
http://pcunix.com/SCOFAQ/scotec1.html#rootfssize

And BTW, I didn't mean to imply that anything there was going to give you a
method to do this- quite the opposite. *Increasing* the size of a root file
system is possible- decreasing it is a horse of another color entirely on
this OS.

Do you have /dev/u and /dev/ru ??
Do you have an entry in /etc/default/filesys for your /u filesystem ??

Hang on a minute. You are trying to resize the root filesystem aren't you?
Forget it - you can't do it. You'll have to re-install if you want to add a
/u

You must have missed that he DECREASED his root file system to do this.

He can't do that- first, there's no guarantee that active data blocks are not
in the area he stole from, and secondly the root still thinks it is just as
big as it ever was- which is going to REALLY screw things up sooner or later
if this hasn't already.

BTW, "putting it back" isn't going to fix the damage that could have taken
place- your safest bet at this point is to reinstall.

Yes I read his post again after writing and hitting the send button. I
realised I had spouted utter crap and corrected myself! You responded quick
to my post I have to say!
