I was in a similar boat last month. My boat almost sank in yet another
"learn by destroying" exercise.
I had a perfectly good working system with an 12x cdrom and a 2x cd-rw
burner. I could copy cd's just fine, albiet slowly. Then, I got a nice
new HP 9300(?) 10x cd-rw burner. One problem: I could only copy cd's at
2X speed. Anything faster would create underflows and trash the copy.
Tinkering with cdrecord did nothing useful.
I assumed (assumption, the mother of all screwups) that a 10x burner
would not need a source drive that's faster than the destination cd-rw
drive. Wrong. This derrangement does not give the CPU enough time to do
whatever CPU's do during the copy process. If the CPU gets busy, the
destination drive gets starved for data and the cd goes in the trash.
Replacing the ancient 12x source drive with a not so ancient 32x cdrom
drive solved the problem.
Make sure the source cdrom drive, for a copy is considerably faster than
the destination burner.
