From my own[0] ISP!

Let me just reconfigure these switches so that the poster gets a few
more volts than expected...

It gets better.

Some digging by a blueyonder subscriber found:

| Think all us Blueyonder subscribers and share holders are entitled to an
| explanation and an apology.
|
| This SPAM was generated by or with the knowledge of David Docherty,Managing
| Director of Broadband Content at Telewest
|
| mun...@flextech.co.uk
|
| To spam onto the Blueyonder Usenet groups would require the use of a
| Telewest account, this is in flagrant breach of the AUP, one assumes Alex
| Brown will be suspending Mr Docherty`s account.
|
| This SPAM was also carried onto worldwide Usenet and has I have already seen
| created a very negative impression of enviromental , green , campaigners.
|
| The full story appears with a bit of digging, McLean International Mining is
| the company mentioned in the original SPAM:
|
| >>>Your gonna love this, well specially those of us that are customers of
| Teleworst, I mean Telewest Broadband:
|
| Companies house search turns up nothing, McLean International Mining is not
| incorporated as a comapny in the UK.
|
| www.samspade.org Whois? query gives domain name owner as:
| Domain Name: MCLEANINTERNATIONALMINING.COM
|
| Registrant

| Administrative Contact:
| panay, mark mun...@xclaim.co.uk
| 63 Allington rd
| bristol, Unknown BS31PT

| +4401179395590
|
| Now if we move on to a www.google.search for "McLean International Mining"
| gives:
|
| http://www.whodunitcanada.com/booklist.htm specifically this entry:
|
| Docherty, David Killing Jar 14.99
| POCUK 07/02 THRILLER HARRY YEATS MCLEAN INTERNATIONAL MINING
|
| Now using google again for: "Docherty, David Killing Jar McLean
| International" we get
|
| http://www.murderone.co.uk/acatalog/Online_Catalogue_Authors_D_37.html
| synopsis
|
| >>>David Docherty - Killing Jar (May)
| McLean International is one of the world's biggest mining companies. But
| when its policy of pursuing profit at any price backfires with devastating
| results, local residents Harry Yeats & Ingrid McLean are determined to seek
| justice & force the company to accept its responsibilities.<<<
|
| Now from:
|
| http://www.tangled-web.co.uk/crimedigests/digests02/pocketbosu02.html
|
| Apart from company name aparently changing to Rees international , the
| author is:
|
| David Docherty is an accomplished academic who has published several
| important books on the media. He is now the
|
| >>>>>>>Managing Director of broadband content at Telewest.<<<<<<<<
|
| He was previously the Director of New Media and Deputy Director of
| Television at the BBC, in London.
|
| Help stamp out SPAM, the email addresses you`ll all be wanting are:
|
| mun...@xclaim.co.uk
|
| mun...@telewest.co.uk or possibly mun...@blueyonder.co.uk or
| mun...@flextech.com
|
| remember if none of the above addresses bounces , Mr Docherty and Mr Panay
| are very keen to receive get rich quick schemes, special offers and porn in
| their email, dont disappoint them....
|
| If the mail does bounce , it is not good for investor relations so mail:
|
| Richard Williams
| Head of Investor Relations
| +44 (0)20 7299 5479
| +44 (0)20 7299 5495
| mun...@flextech.co.uk
|
| mun...@telewest.co.uk
|
| mun...@blueyonder.co.uk
|
| mun...@blueyonder.co.uk
|
| Viral marketing at it`s very very worst, someone pass this on to a
| newspaper it`s gotta make an amusing article to chuckle over, us Teleworst
| shareholders have little else to laugh about.
|
| Adam<<<
|
|
| Any doubts that Mr Docherty was unwittingly involved was quashed by the
| email I received this afternoon from Mr Docherty
|
| >>>>Sorry you felt this was spam. It's not intended to be. It's meant to be
| a drama.
| We hadn't intended anyone to link to the canadian site. Have you got a
| number I
| can talk to you on, to explain things further?
|
| PS well done.<<<<
|
| Personally I think that many more than just myself have an interest in
| hearing what exactly MrDocherty has to say, including smeared enviromental
| campaigners, Blueyonder subscribers, Telewest shareholders and Usenet
| subscribers accross the world who would feel that "accomplished academic who
| has published several
| important books on the media,
| previously the Director of New Media
| and Deputy Director of
| Television at the BBC, in London and currently
| Managing Director of broadband content at Telewest" would know what spam is
| and how it is perceived.
|
| I await the response with interest.

I have snipped the mail addresses, out of misguided pity.

Mr Docherty replied (by proxy):

| Working with a company called Yourrelease.com, we planned a drama based
| around my book, The Killing Jar. We were trying for a War of the Worlds
| effect - i.e. draw people into the story and make it as real as possible.
| Unfortunately, the volunteer poster acted irresponsibly advertising my
| book. So it looks like spam. Not that we intended that in any way shape or
| form.
|
| As someone who has spent twelve years working in television and on the Web,
| I've never ceased to be amazed by what I learn every day. (And by the
| mistakes its possible to make!) It's a pity I've been undermined by
| practices which I neither condone nor did we [Yourrelease and I] pay for.
| It may be a bit late in the day, but I ask your forgiveness and
| understanding as I/we try to sort this out.
|
| This is not in any way related to either Flextech Television or Telewest
| Broadband, and is my own personal venture.
|
| Regards
|
| David

Cool.

Our ISP never does anything like that, but then again, no-one there seems to
have even a smidgen of that much imagination and flair. *sigh* a price we
pay for "platinum" service ;-)
