The Waste subscription list is proposed to provide a forum for
scientific discussion on the one hand by people who are interested
in the effects which their wastes can take on our natural
environment (soil, water, air and the seas) and on the other hand
by people who try to reduce wastes, which are involved with
collecting, fractioning, dumping, conditioning and recycling
wastes or people which treat them, so that they can reused for
a different purpose.

Specific topics may include but are not limited to:
+ the many different types of wastes and their effection on the
ecosystems in the soil, the rivers, the atmosphere and the seas
and
oceans
+ industrial and municipal solid waste (domestic refuse)
+ dumping (nowadays or in the past) of toxic wastes in landfill
sites
+ sealing and watertighten of landfill sites and underground dumping
sites
+ different world-wide skills and techniques of waste reduction in
the
production-process, of processing, treating, recycling and
reusing wastes
and other waste management methods
+ environmental impact of waste treating plants and landfill sites
+ pros and cons of waste incineration and the rank of its spent air
+ waste-to-energy
+ specific problems of transport of hazardous wastes on land, air
and sea
+ pacticable collection systems
+ wastewater and sludges use, composting
+ reuse of tyres, waste-paper, packings, etc.
+ hazards of waste batteries, neon tubes, refrigerator-liquid,
synthetics, etc.

This list provides a discussion forum for those working in all
aspects low-cost sewerage in both industrialised and developing
countries. The aim is to facilitate information sharing and
to promote collaborative working, joint problem solving and
mutual support.

Low-cost sewerage covers two main sewerage technologies. These are:

(1)"Settled sewerage", which describes the system in which wastewater
from one or more households is discharged into a single-comparment
septic tank (usually termed in this context a solids interceptor
tank), the settled (or solids-free) effluent from which is discharged
into shallow, small-bore gravity sewers. Settled sewerage is now the
preferred name for small-bore sewerage, small diameter gravity
sewerage, and septic tank (or common) effluent drainage.

(2) "Simplified sewerage", which describes what has been called
shallow sewerage and its in-block variant sometimes referred to as
backyard or condominial sewerage. This system does not convey
presettled sewage, but is essentially conventional sewerage without
any of its conservative design requirements that have accrued over
the past century or so; it can be considered as the latter stripped
down to its hydraulic basics.

Further details are given in "Low-cost Urban Sanitation" and
"Low-cost Sewerage", both published by John Wiley & Sons in 1996.

Integrated Biosystems - General Forum

The general objectives of UNU/ZERI series of mailing lists on
integrated bio-systems are:
(a) to provide the electronic platform for a global exchange of
information and experiences on integrated bio-systems
(b) to promote research and application of ecologically sound and
technologies to achieve complete utilization and recycling of
wastes
(c) to discuss how traditional self-reliant technologies and
frontier high technologies can be combined and be used in
integrated manner
(d) to stimulate research on problems related to their applications,
integration and economic sustainability.

Through the utilization of by-products and wastes, these bio-systems
should contribute to sustainable development by using the zero
emissions approach, i.e. production and manufacturing "without
wastes" through the clustering of industries. The application of
integrated bio-systems will also provide opportunities for
increasing employment, the income of practitioners and small
entrepreneurships development.

This listserv has been implemented to facilitate the distribution of
Enviro-Newsbrief, the daily update produced by the U.S. EPA
Headquarters Library.
Enviro-Newsbrief provides a summary of the news that affects EPA,
especially:
Appointments to EPA and other environment-related appointments;
the Council on Environmental Quality; changes to OMB's process of
regulatory review; regulatory reform; "reinventing government";
environmental legislation, especially reauthorization of key
legislation; federal employee issues; and interagency work on
environmental issues.

As the principal purpose of the list is the distribution of
Enviro-Newsbrief, the list will not function as a discussion group.

The list is particularly meant for environmental scientists.
It will distribute recent information about publications
(abstract and source), courses, educational programmes,
resource information, workhops and conferences. The emphasis
of this list is on the supply of information in stead of being
a forum for discussions. However, requests of members for
information on these matters to others are welcome too.
We have deliberately chosen for a open distribution list and

The BioGroup was established to provide
a global forum for the technical community to discuss
intrinsic/enhanced bioremediation topics.
GZA hopes this forum provides a medium to transfer
technology, standardize biotreatability protocols, and advance the
science and engineering of bioremediation technologies.
GZA recognizes bioremediation is not a panacea for soil/groundwater
contamination; however, we feel it is an under-utilized remediation
technology, its limitations notwithstanding.

BioGroup postings are archived as a collaborative effort of the
Department of Environmental Biology (University of Guelph),
the Groundwater Remediation Project
(National Water Research Institute, Environment Canada), and GZA.
You can visit the archive at
http://gwrp.cciw.ca/internet/bioremediation/biorem-archive.html

To subscribe to the mailing list, please visit the BioGroup home
page at http://biogroup.gzea.com, select "Join Us", and follow the
directions therein.
Members may choose to participate in either a non-digest mode (i.e.,
receive each message at the time it is posted) or a digest mode
(i.e., receive one message each day summarizing all the postings of
that day).
Bioremediation Discussion Group (BioGroup), an Internet mailing
list serving nearly 1,000 environmental scientists/engineeers
worldwide which also maintain a searchable archive at their web

QS-9000 is a series of mandatory quality system standards written by
a team from the 'big three', other car makers, and the truck
manufacturers.
It applies to all suppliers of PRODUCTION parts and materials to the
auto industry. Each car maker has its own requirements as to when
first-tier, second-tier, etc. suppliers will be required to conform.

QS-9000 is a superset of ISO 9001. All ISO requirements are
included, plus much, much more, so they will represent a lot
of work for companies that are not already well along the ISO road..
QS is prescriptive to a large degree.
There are seven QS-9000 documents and all of them must be
referenced in order to gain a complete understanding of what is
required.

Since most stakeholders who are concerned about these issues do not
have access to electronic mail, we are setting up a consultative
process that will also include face-to-face local interviews and
national roundtable discussions in 15-20 countries in Asia, Africa,
and Latin America where short-term demand for livestock products is
in conflict with longer-term concern for environmental degradation,
such as deforestation, loss of biodiversity, land degradation,
nutrient depletion, pollution from excessive nutrients, etc.

The electronic conference will begin with an overview of the issues
related to livestock and environment interactions and the types of
environmental degradation that can be associated with: (a) grazing
systems, (b) mixed crop/livestock systems, and (c) industrial
(land-detached) livestock systems. Conferees will then have the
option of dividing into groups organized by types of system to
discuss and identify possible future policy and technology options
and research and development strategies. Throughout the 12 week
conference, the emphasis will be on sharing experiences and
discussing issues of common interests that could lead to future
cooperation among institutions with different perspectives but a
common concern for human welfare and the design of policies and
technologies that provide people with both environmental services
(such as clean water and air, biodiversity, etc.) and important
livestock products and services (such as meat, dairy products,
manure, animal traction, and recycling wastes, etc.).

Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report

CDC's official MMWR electronic copy of record is the MMWR in Adobe
Acrobat portable document format (.pdf). The .pdf MMWR is identical
in content to the paper copy of record. The MMWR text that follows
is in ASCII text file format and has not been proofread. An
adequate ASCII translation does not exist for each character
possibly present in the .pdf file, and there may be other
significant character translation errors. Also, the ASCII text that
follows lacks the figures and tables of the electronic .pdf and
paper format of MMWR. Therefore, CDC does not consider this ASCII
text file to represent a copy of record of the MMWR.

Global Directory of Marine Science Institutions & Scientists.

The purpose of the Marine Biology list-server is to provide
a forum on all issues of interest to marine scientists throughout
the world.
Appropriate topics for discussion will include (among others):
-- marine ecology (invertebrates, fish, plants, etc.)
-- evolution and the origin of life
-- systematics
-- chemical oceanography
-- physical oceanography
-- seagrass and algal biology, systematics, and ecology
-- habitat restoration
-- estuarine ecology
-- mangrove biology
-- funding opportunities
-- job openings in marine science
-- new and historical data availability
-- abstracts for new and recent publications
-- new research in progress
-- course announcements from marine labs and universities
-- threats to the marine environment
-- anything else that is of interest to the marine science community
-- meeting and conference announcements
-- the availability of unpublished documents (grey literature) that
might be of interest to many
-- web page announcements of interest to marine scientists
-- marine parks and preserve news

The last directory of scientists working in marine and freshwater
science was published by Unesco in 1983. As part of my work in
marine information management with the Intergovernmental
Oceanographic Commission, we would like to compile a new
directory. The most obvious way is online and so we have set up
a Directory database.
We are making this request to scientists worldwide, so that
eventually it will become THE online finding tool for those
working in marine and freshwater science and those seeking
contract partners, co-authors, reviewers, specialists etc.

The International Traffic in Hazardous Waste

The Center for Investigative Reporting's (CIR) first story on the
export of hazardous waste broke in The Nation in 1987. Now, three
years later, CIR and Bill Moyers bring their complete tale of the
shadowy waste trade to the public's attention in this expaned

authors' full and unprecedented coverage of one of the most important
environmental issues of the decade. paper, $11.95

"CIR's reporters have accomplished the ultimate in muckraking by
showing how we're mucking up the entire planet with our toxic waste.
Global Dumping Ground serves not only to expose the problem, but to
correct it." -- Jessica Mitford

==========================
The Cytochrome P-450 Proteins:
Environmental and General Aspects
==========================

ISBN: 955-552-029-9

These proteins are
components of the "mixed-function oxidases" which are involved in the
metabolism of pesticides, pollutants, drugs, steroid hormones etc and
whose functioning in adrenal cortex mitochondria are influenced by the
dielectric constant. We give relevant information below.

The book was first published (in West Germany) in 1979 and subsequently
reprinted in 1990. While it needs updating, it still provides a most
valuable introduction to the field with its very comprehensive
bibliography upto the time of preparation. It can therefore, with
citation analysis of earlier articles, also provide the means of
identifying more recent publications in the research area of interest.

The book has xi + 295 pages and covers earlier work on the biochemistry
and biophysics of the proteins. It discusses the roles played by the
proteins in the metabolism of a host of important substances such as
carcinogens, pesticides, pollutants, drugs of various types, steroid
hormones, other steroids etc. Aspects of genetic consideration have also
been noted. A role of cytochrome P-450 in the biochemistry and evolution
of primitive life forms has been proposed. The book therefore has a
place
in medical, environmental, agricultural, chemical, biochemical and
biophysical libraries, among others. It was favourably reviewed in the
specialist journal " Xenobiotica " when it was first published.

The book is priced at twenty US dollars (US $20) plus postage and
packing. Please write to the address given below to request a proforma
invoice stating if the book is required to be sent by registered airmail
or registered surface mail.

Journal of Industrial Ecology
=====================

ISSN:

Editors: David Allen, John Ehrenfeld, Reid Lifset (Editor-in-Chief)
First Issue: Spring 1997

The MIT Press is pleased to announce the publication of the Journal of
Industrial Ecology, an international, multi-disciplinary quarterly
designed to foster both understanding and practice in the emerging field
of industrial ecology. The Journal will be owned by Yale University,
edited at the Yale University School of Forestry and Environmental
Studies, and
published by The MIT Press.

Premiering with its first issue in spring 1997, Journal of Industrial
Ecology is open to and encourages submissions that are interdisciplinary
in approach. In addition to more formal academic papers, the journal
seeks to
provide a forum for continuing exchange of information and opinions
through contributions from scholars, environmental managers,
policymakers,
advocates and others involved in environmental science, management and
policy.
Topics addressed by the journal include:

* material and energy flows studies ("industrial metabolism")
* technological change
* dematerialization and decarbonization
* life cycle planning, design and assessment
* design for the environment
* extended producer responsibility ("product stewardship")
* eco-industrial parks ("industrial symbiosis")
* product-oriented environmental policy
* eco-efficiency.

For complete instructions for authors, as well as additional information
on the journal, consult the Journal of Industrial Ecology page at the

ABOUT:
======

This is a list of waste mailing lists or environmental and nature science
mailing lists which discuss waste topics or related materia and are
available primarily through the Internet.
A mailing list is different from a newsgroup because you do not receive
anything unless you specifically request it.

My role in this publication is solely in its maintenance, ranking and
upkeep. I cannot help you subscribe to a mailing list, find lists not listed
in this FAQ, nor can I help you find addresses for ones that are
outdated. If you wish to bring an invalid contact address to my
attention, please email me the full bounce header of your failed
attempt.

Note to ranking:
NR Not Recommended
* useful
** good
*** valuable
**** of high value
- (not yet ranked)
The ranking is the value of participating the mailing list in
respect of waste topics or waste management issues.

Note to subscription:
In the case of most listserver you have to add your Name:
SUBSCRIBE list-name Firstname Lastname
Replace list-name by the given list name and
Firstname by your first name and
Lastname by your last name.

In the case of MAJORDOMO listserver you have to add your
email address instead of your name:
SUBSCRIBE list-name yo...@email.address
Replace list-name by the given list name and

yo...@email.address by your email address.

This document is posted to the following Usenet newsgroups:
sci.environment.waste
alt.wastewater
sci.answers,alt.answers,news.answers
news.lists.misc
bionet.announce

It's posted around the beginning of each month.
The new version supersedes any previous versions.
If the copy you have is more than one month old, then it is obsolete.

REQUEST FOR CHANGING, DELETING OR ADDING:
=======================================

If you have a list that you want added to the list of Waste Mailing
Lists and Neswgroups, send a request to

Wolfgang...@bmu.gv.at

Include this information (in plain text - *not* in html):

The name of the list and the name you want the list to be listed under
if different from the actual listname.

A contact address. **This must be an email address - not a WWW URL**
This should be something that gives back a positive response, such as
an auto-responder or an address aliased to a human (i.e. an address
in the form of listname-request or owner-listname). It should not be
an address that's aliased directly to the server, unless the server
gives back a help file in response to a text message and not an error
message.

A brief description of the list. Please make this brief, saving the
detailed descriptions for your list subscribers.

An ftp and/or http URL, esp. about an archive, if applicable.

Instructions on how to subscribe.

The list owner's actual email address and full name.

unmoderated mailing list WASTE
unmoderated newsgroup SCI.ENVIRONMENT.WASTE
#############################################

1. Aim and discussion topics

=====================

Member statistics:
WASTE: 412 members
WASTE-Digest: 43 members

Short List Description: Effects or impacts of Wastes and Waste
Management Methods.

Keywords: waste management, hazardous waste, garbage, refuse,
industrial waste, municipal solid waste, domestic refuse, source
reduction, collecting and fractioning of wastes, waste processing,
reuse, recycling, incineration, waste treatment, conditioning to inert
them, waste disposal, composting, hazard potential for subsequent
generations, greenhouse gases

The increasing quantity and the hazards of human wastes evolved to a
very serious environmental problem. They can impair the general
well-being of man, animals, vegetation, their basis of existence or
their natural environment.

Tthis topic needs an integrated approch by environmentalists,
biologists, ecologists, chemists, technicians and lawyers.

This mailing list and newsgroup is proposed to provide a forum for

scientific discussion on the one hand by people who are interested in
the effects which their wastes can take on our natural environment
(soil, water, air and the seas) and on the other hand by people

involved in collecting, fractioning, processing, treating, recycling
or dumping wastes or other waste management methods.

This group is proposed as unmoderated group. A moderation should be
the last precaution against off-topic posts, spam, or repetitive
flaming (attacks). As this mailing list and newsgroup has the aim to
bring together very differnent groups of people it wouldn't be easy
for a moderator to filter the postings to serve all.

I've chosen the label waste instead of a more specific description
(such as recycling or dumping) since this is the usual description for
departements of administrations, non governmental organisations and
enterprises.

An unmoderated mailing list and newsgroup which would provide a world
wide forum for a serious discussion by people who try to reduce
wastes, which are involved with collecting, fractioning, processing,
treating, recycling or dumping wastes or with other waste management
methods or people which treat them, so that they can reused for a
different purpose, as well as by people, who are cronfronted with the
dangers of wastes in everyday life.

To assist governments, NGOs, environmentalists and scientists in the
acquisition of scientific and legal waste-related information as well
as an informative arena on the many different world wide techniques of
conditioning, recycling and reusing wastes.

Specific topics may include but are not limited to:

+ the many different types of wastes and their effection on the
ecosystems in the soil, the rivers, the atmosphere and the seas and
oceans
+ industrial and municipal solid waste (domestic refuse)
+ dumping (nowadays or in the past) of toxic wastes in landfill sites
+ sealing and watertighten of landfill sites and underground dumping
sites
+ different world-wide skills and techniques of waste reduction in the
production-process, of processing, treating, recycling and reusing
wastes and other waste management methods
+ environmental impact of waste treating plants and landfill sites
+ pros and cons of waste incineration and the rank of its spent air

+ waste-to-energy mechanism

+ specific problems of transport of hazardous wastes on land, air and
sea
+ pacticable collection systems
+ wastewater and sludges use, composting
+ reuse of tyres, waste-paper, packings, etc.
+ hazards of waste batteries, neon tubes, refrigerator-liquid,
synthetics, etc.
+ greenhouse gases

2. General information about the Mailing List WASTE & Digest Form

=================================================

If you (unsubscribe WASTE and) subscribe WASTE-Digest you don't get
every posting on the mailing list by email. The server stores all
postings till a certain level (50 kilobytes) is reached and then mails
you one long email with all the postings of the last few days. The
interval time depends on, how many and how long the postings have been.
This can be in a few days or last perhaps a week.
This is a service for those list members who don't want to get many
emails.

You can get information about the list and subscribe to the list on the
follwoing URL:
http://www.cedar.univie.ac.at/arch/waste/about.html

or

(1) Send an e-mail to majo...@cedar.univie.ac.at

(2) Subject line does not matter

(3) Type the following command on the first line of your mail:

subscribe waste yo...@email.address

or to the digested version:

subscribe waste-digest yo...@email.address
Replace yo...@email.address with your email-address.

Examples: subscribe waste fin...@cedar.univie.ac.at or
subscribe waste-digest fin...@cedar.univie.ac.at

To unsubscribe from the list:

(1) Send an e-mail to majo...@cedar.univie.ac.at

(2) Subject line does not matter

(3) Type the following command on the first line of your mail:

unsubscribe waste yo...@email.address
or from the digested version:
unsubscribe waste-digest yo...@email.address
Replace yo...@email.address with your email-address.

Examples: unsubscribe waste fin...@cedar.univie.ac.at or
unsubscribe waste-digest fin...@cedar.univie.ac.at

To post a message to the entire waste list (no difference if you
receive the digested or the non-digested version)

send your mail to wa...@cedar.univie.ac.at

3. Nettiqette
=========

The general "netiquette" FAQs posted in the newsgroup
news.announce.newusers and news.answers apply to the proposed group
and mailing list. Participants are encouraged to use descriptive
Subjects (e.g., "Burning PCBs" rather than just "Help" or "Question").
A fine nettiqette and service to the list-members is also to post a
summary of all answers to the list you got to your personal email
adress to a specific question. You should use English language.

Due to telephone rates, speed of modem, download delays and additional
rates for the provider the cost of downloading lage files maybe a
noticable ammount (i.e. 20 min.download for 1.500 members about US$
1.000).
So the WASTE policy on exchange large (binary) files (i.e. pictures
and simulations, etc.) has always been as follows:
(a) Anyone willing to share a binary file should contact
bernhar...@cedar.univie.ac.at
(b) The file will be put into the WASTE repository on the WWW
where those who want could see it.

When you reply to someone's posting, snip out the bit you want to
comment on - don't simply hit `Reply' on your mailer and send the
whole thing back (especially the long ones!) - it costs money.

You putting in links to other sites. However, being quite lazy,
could you enter them with the http:// before the www.etc such as
http://www.cedar.univie.ac.at/waste/ When you do this it becomes
a clickable link and the reader doesn't have to copy and paste
it into his browser.
Also, if you put mailto:XXXXX (where "XXXXX" is an e-mail address)
this makes the e-mail link "clickable" and does not have to be cut
and pasted either.
If you want to add a newsgroup put news: without slashes before
the name of the newsgroup (as news:sci.environment.waste).
The current versions of the most popular email programs recognize
these conventions.

On-topic advertising and e mployment (help and/or position wanted)
noticesis are limited to once per week. Please send such post only on
fridays.

Discussions about saving the nature without context to wastes should
better take place on the newsgroups sci.environment and
sci.bio.conservation or appropriate mailing list like Wind Energy
Weekly from Tom Gray, and the talk about energy-production
(with the only exception of waste-to-energy discussion)
and production techniques (with the only exception of
waste reduction in the production-process) should better take place on
the newsgroup sci.energy or on the sci.engr hierarchy or appropriate
mailing lists.

The following types of posts are strictly PROHIBITED in this mailing
list:
* Material and advertisments unrelated to conditioning, recycling, and
impact of wastes (off-topic)
* Spam (defined as articles posted to more than 5 newsgroups)
* Make-money-fast or other chain or fraudulent schemes
* Forged posts (anonymous posts are allowed)
* Personal insults or repetitive flaming (attacks)

The use of e-mail addresses from articles posted to this group for the
purpose of sending junk (mass unsolicited) e-mail or for compiling a
list so that others may do so is specifically PROHIBITED.

In the absence of moderation, prohibitions can, of course, only be
enforced by the collective will of the group and/or by after-the-fact
complaints to the offender's service provider. If anyone feels
offended by other party's action, please, contact the offending
service provider and/or the listowner at <Wolfgang...@bmu.gv.at>
PRIVATELY, never through the list.

To set tighter rules to avoid such abusers would, probably, harm
the WASTE environment for easy scientific exchange: Our policy is
to keep WASTE as open as possible and not-to go moderated.
Finally, we have the techical capacity to set up any arrangement of
filters whatsoever. However, for transparency, it may rather be a
better solution not to start to set filters in a
'tit-for-tat' pattern: It would definitely end up in a kind of
'Alcatraz-set-of-rules'.
