Yes, it is time for some new Enya releases, but I would rather wait and
get an album that wasn't rushed to the stores. I have had to content
myself with CD maxi-singles and Suzanne Cianni CDs.
I read in "Parade" a sunday supplement that Enya was named after a Celtic
goddess. Enya? Goddess? Definitely.
(sorry KIBO)

My apology. I forgot that Enya's real name is Eithne. While no references
to Enya ever popped up in Irish tales or mythology, but Eithne has several
times. As to what role she played, you better check it yourself, since it
has nothing to do with alt.music.enya.

Rubbish.
Enya is the media'ised version of the Irish name Aine (acute accent on A) for Ann.
Her name in English is just plain old Ann Brennan. Sorry to destroy the myth.

Strange, then, that Enya herself thinks her real name is Eithne which she or
her label (who knows which) decided (correctly) that most of us wouldn't be
able to pronounce.

The Goddess thing is possible, I suppose. Lots of names have religious
significance. Never heard this goddess thing anywhere else though.

My my, she's sure pulled one over on lots of people. Just think, we've all
been fooled into believing her name was 'Eithne'. Even her sister, brother,
and uncles were fooled. I'm so glad we had someone like you to clarify for
us - heaven forbid Eithne Ni Bhraonain should be allowed to claim her name
was such.

A few days ago i went to my library and found the dictionary of celtic
mythology.
I looked up Eithne and found Ethne..... this is a condensation of what
was listed...

Ethne was an immortal. She was attacked, and survived it, but lost her
cloak/cape/cloth of invisibility. this made her become mortal,
and she was doomed to walk the earth forever, listening to her fellow
immortals searching for her in vain.

i think that was kinda how it goes.

what _I_ get out of this is that she is a Goddess who came to Earth and
derives her inspiration for her music from listening to other Gods.
hehehehehe IMHO.

...and, just so my prior flame is not the only perception those who are
new here (relatively speaking) get about me, I'm about to flame using
facts ;). According to _An Encyclopedia of Faeries_ by Katherine Briggs
(Pantheon: 1976), Aine was a fairy queen kidnapped by a human Earl. She
eventually gave birth to Earl Fitzgerald, famous in his own right in
folklore. Thus, the name is *not* 'just plain Ann', had LC been correct
about Eithne's real name in the first place.

On another note, I could not find 'Eithne' in the book, but it only deals
with deities related to the Fey folk, so unless Eithne had been some sort
of protector of fairies, she wouldn't be in there. However I *did* find
an entry for 'Ethna', a beautiful mortal queen who became the object of the
fairy king of the dead's affections. The story deals with how she was
rescued eventually by her husband. Given the vaguries of naming (you need
just look up all the names which trace back to Mary to know what I mean),
this might be the equivelent of 'Eithne' where our Eithne comes from. Then
again, it might not :).

And, OB Enya reference for those who are in a flaming mood: A friend and I
decided to have a race to see who could wear out a CD by playing it. We both,
without the other knowing, picked Shepherd Moons for the experiment.

Strange paradox; if she's mortal, she has a finite life span, and will die.
Yet, the text [above] says she's doomed to walk the earth _forever_. How can
both these statements be true?

Not that this has ANYTHING at all to do with the real person, we're talking
about ;-) ;-)

Well...I just thought it was my civic duty to tell you that you cannot wear out
a CD just by playing it. A CD works due to (laser) light bouncing off it,
nothing actually touches the CD (but the light) while it's playing.
So either you'll wear out your CD player first, or you'll go insane trying to
wear the disk out...

This has been a public service announcement...you may now return to your
regularly scheduled programming...

Donna (:

OBEnya: I love her work; I think she has one of the most beautiful voices I
have ever heard. And her music is extremely well thought out. I hope
she releases a new album SOON, I grow impatient...

A slight of topic post..

Hey Tony... I'm a manga & Anime fan my self (about 300 mangas) I'm on
RIME/FIDO anime echos...

SO when is the release date for Enya's 4th CD?

PS: I prefer "ENYA" to her LOOOONG last name... I don't even KNOW how to
say that! besides it would take up most of a CD cover to spell.. ;)
