We're about a month away from the opening of the new U.S. 231 William H.
Natcher Bridge between Maceo, KY and Rockport, IN. After KYTC and INDOT
re-route U.S. 231, I have it from INDOT that existing 231 from the old
Glover Cary Bridge to Reo, IN at Indiana 66 will be renumbered as Indiana
161, which currently ends 3 miles west of Reo at 66. 66 and 161 will
multiplex over that distance.

My idea, however, is to extend U.S. 431 from its current end in downtown
Owensboro, KY to Reo. That's about 9.5 more miles that would be added to
431's length. And I don't think it's a bad idea.

I welcome everyone's opinions.

I had the same idea when I first heard the plans. It's a completely natural
extension, and anyway, what will they call the part of the old road in KY?

I've been wondering what KY will call the "old" 231 as well. In fact, I
have sent an e-mail to KYTC's planning department to ask. I'll post when I
find out.

Just got an e-mail from Dawn Offerman in the KYTC planning dept. In her
e-mail, she says the following:

"At this time, it is proposed to route US 231 along the US 60 Bypass and
US 60 East and re-number existing US 231 through the City. Old US 231 will
probably be re-numbered as KY 2155 from the Bypass interchange to the
Indiana State Line.

"Please note, however, this proposal is not yet official. Official
designation must be approved and signed by numerous officials in the
Transportation Cabinet including General Counsel and the Cabinet Secretary."

Thanks, Dawn, for the info! She gave no timetable for the approval process,
but I would guess that it won't -- can't -- take too long. Sept. 25 is the
supposed opening date of the Natcher Bridge.

Wonder where they got the "2155" number? I'll have to poke around in
some of the spreadsheet route logs on the KYTC site to see if that
designation is currently in use.

I haven't been able to find 2155 in any of my searching, but that doesn't
mean it hasn't existed somewhere else. ???

I'm still pressing for the extension of US 431 from Owensboro into Indiana
... I'd route it east off of Frederica along 4th Street then north along
J.R. Miller Blvd. to the Glover Cary bridge. Coming back south, I'd have it
follow J.R. Miller to 5th Street then west on 5th back to Frederica. Hell,
the signs for the southbound routing are already there downtown!

It's just common sense, I think.

Its not in the Route Log found at
<http://www.kytc.state.ky.us/planning/his_extracts/metadata.shtm#rl>.That log was updated on the 8-21-02.

I also checked the route log... no, it's not there, but the signs are up on
a portion of the US 60 by-pass anyway. They're covered with trash bags, but
they are up as of 7:30 last night.

There is a freeware program called arcexplorer that will read GIS data.

I haven't tried that, but I usually open the .dbf file in Excel.

Back on Aug. 16 there were US 231 signs covered by trash bags all the
way from the bridge to the US 60/KY 144 interchange.

Yes, I recall the signs being there then, but now they've put them from
60/144 to the 60 bypass. I also believe that the signs at the New Hartford
Road interchange will be changed this coming week perhaps.

I just don't think they're getting in that big of a hurry.

By the way, Jeffrey, did you catch that INDOT is renumbering the old 231 as
Indiana 161? Multiplexing it with 66 from the junction south of Richland
City to Reo, then on its own south to the Cary Bridge.

I knew about that change about a year ago after contacting INDOT for info on
the 231 project from the Natcher Bridge to I-64. I can share some of that
with you later ... it's some grist for a "What might have been ..." story.

You hadn't mentioned that so I thought maybe you hadn't been over that
way. Any idea if they have changed the overhead signs on the Natcher
Parkway?

On an unrelated note, have you noticed the re-signing project on the
Audubon Parkway?

I've seen that mentioned a couple of times recently. I put a note about
it on my website: http://www.kentuckyroads.com/natcher_bridge/

I was just on the by-pass late last night and there are no 231 signs south
of the 60 intersection. That includes at the New Hartford Rd. interchange
... yet. I doubt they've changed the overheads on the Natcher, but will
check later today if I get a chance.

I haven't been on the Audubon for a while but I have to say that it's about
time they re-signed it! With few exceptions, I think many of those signs
are the 1970 originals!!! (Of course, that doesn't count the ones for the
KY 1554 and KY 1078 interchanges, which were added in the mid-80s, if memory
serves.)
