-------------------------------------

Subject: SECTION ONE : General Information

-------------------------------------

Subject: (1.1) What movie newsgroups are there?

There are a number of movie related newsgroups and they can be roughly
categorized into three main groups :
Group A : rec.arts.movies.*
Group B : Other movie groups in the Usenet rec.* hierarchy
Group C : Movie groups outside the Usenet rec.* hierarchy

This FAQ is primarily oriented toward the newsgroups in Group A. A short
summary of each of these groups is below, followed by a listing of those
newsgroups that fall under Groups B and C.

-------------------------------------

Subject: Group A :

rec.arts.movies.announce [moderated]

This moderated newsgroup contains information on up-to-date events in
the world of movies. For example: new movie announcements,
celebrity news, award ceremony news, award ceremony results, film
festival news, film festival reports, official blockbuster charts
and anything that is newsworthy. What is newsworthy will be up to
the moderator's judgment.

Moderators: This newsgroup is being moderated by a team of moderators,
with Colin Needham <c...@ibmpcug.co.uk> as the coordinator.

For article submission, send email to <ra...@ibmpcug.co.uk>.
For questions about articles submitted, clarification of the
guidelines and other group related messages, send email to
<rama-r...@ibmpcug.co.uk>.

rec.arts.movies.current-films

This newsgroup is for discussing the contents (plots, quality,
meanings, goofs etc.) of movies that have been released recently
and also for discussing upcoming movies (movies in production or
not released yet for other reasons). Any films that are currently
showing at a first-run theater somewhere in the world should be
considered to be current films.

This would mean that Americans who have just rented a US film from
the "New Releases" section in a video store should post their comments
to rec.arts.movies.current-films because the film may still be
in-release in Europe and Asia.

The rule of thumb to use is : "A film is still current if it is within
1.5 to 2 years after its world premiere."

rec.arts.movies.past-films

This newsgroup is for discussing the contents (plots, quality,
meanings, goofs etc.) of movies that are more than a couple of
years old. This means all the old classics, all the old non-classics,
from Casablanca to Blade Runner, from His Girl Friday to Die Hard,
from Back to the Future :), from Psycho to The Godfather. In
other words any movie that hasn't been released in the last couple
of years.

rec.arts.movies.reviews [moderated]

This is a low volume newsgroup where formal reviews of movies are
regularly posted. Submission of reviews of both current films and
older films are welcome.

Moderator: Evelyn Leeper <evelyn...@att.com>

rec.arts.movies.people

This newsgroup contains discussions of actors, actresses, directors,
writers, composers, film critics etc. with focus on their skills, styles
and other characteristics of the person(s) discussed. It also contains
celebrity gossip.

rec.arts.movies.lists+surveys

Lots of us love to try to name and discuss films with various specific
qualities: movies with toilet scenes, movies featuring 30's big band
music, movies with funky opening credits, actors/actresses with the
best/worst quality. This newsgroup encompasses all of these discussions,
as well as top ten, top twenty, & top (pick a number) lists; surveys
asking readers about their favorite comedy/horror/mystery/science
fiction film ever or actors/actresses; and other threads in which
the intent is to get a lot of people to name a lot of movies or
actors/actresses.

rec.arts.movies.movie-going

This newsgroup is about the movie-going culture and theater experiences,
and is the place for questions like : "Where do you sit in the theatres?",
"Why do you watch the credits?", "The cinematic experience has died",
"How come men are afraid to cry when they watch movies?"

rec.arts.movies.tech

This newsgroup is for movie fans interested in the technical aspects of
movies and movie-making but are not actually interested in producing
movies themselves. Topics in this group includes all technical issues
which are approached from the point of view of the film-goer (aspect
ratios, sound systems, etc.) and also some topics on how movies
(special effects) are made.

rec.arts.movies.production

This is a special newsgroup for people who are interested in
making films. Topics that are discussed here include finding
proper site locations, filming contracts and budgets, where
to get film equipments, what consititute a good film school, etc.
This newsgroup is primarily oriented towards people actually producing
films themselves.

rec.arts.movies.erotica

This is a moderated USENET newsgroup dedicated to the intelligent
and mature discussion of erotic films and videos -- hardcore,
softcore or mainstream, gay or heterosexual. Discussion should be
limited to reviews of current and not-so-current releases, gossip,
behind the scenes stories, social, economic and legal issues
surrounding erotic films, and discussion of actors and actresses
(and directors and producers and...). Unacceptable submissions
include spams, commercials and binaries.

Moderators: Jeff Knapp <dire...@gti.net>
Imperator <i...@primus.paranoia.com>

Peter Van Aarle <aa...@bart.nl>
Tim Evanson <teva...@netcom.com>
Article submission address: ra...@paranoia.com
Administrative contact address: rame-r...@paranoia.com

rec.arts.movies.misc

This newsgroup serves as a catch-all group in the rec.arts.movies.*
hierarchy. Any topics that do not fit well into any other rec.arts.movies.*
groups should be posted here.

rec.arts.movies.local.indian

The rec.arts.movies.local.indian newsgroup is open to discussion of
all subjects related to Indian movies and the Indian film industry. The
newsgroup is restricted to any specific language or region. This
newsgroup has been created exclusively for fans of Indian movies.
Readers who wish to discuss internationally distributed Indian
films may wish to use rec.arts.movies.current-flilms or
rec.arts.movies.past-films instead.

Subject: (1.3) What is the standard Netiquette ?

Although there is no authority controlling Usenet, there are generally
accepted traditions called Netiquette. Users may wish to refer to other
appropriate FAQs for details. They are available by anonymous FTP in
rtfm.mit.edu/pub/usenet/news.announce.newusers/* or check out :

Rules_for_posting_to_Usenet

When posting, please remember that people all over the world are reading
your words, so, carefully consider your postings ahead of time.

Specifically,

1) There is no need to repeat similar information in similar
subgroups of the same hierarchy (i.e. multiple groups in the
rec.arts.movies.* hierarchy). ** DO NOT CROSSPOST **.
Doing so will only increase the volume of traffic on the net and
increase the amount of scaning that other users have to do.
There are also costs associated with article transmission and
storage. Unecessary crossposting will only increase those costs.
Follow the general rules of Netiquette (Usenet etiquette) described in
the news.announce.newusers postings above.

2) Always post your articles to the most appropriate subgroups in the
hierarchy.

3) Use a meaningful subject line.

4) If for some reason, you must crosspost your article, divert all
follow-ups to the most appropriate subgroup (choose ONE group)
instead of to all groups that you are crossposting to.
For example :

Newsgroups: rec.arts.movies.current-films,rec.arts.movies.people
Follouwup-To: rec.arts.movies.people
Subject: Is Cruise any good in Vampire ?

(You should also mention in your post in which group that the
followups will appear so that people can follow your thread.)

-------------------------------------

Subject: (1.4) If I have something to tell all movie fans, should I
crosspost ?

If you think your post is "newsworthy", you may want to submit
it to rec.arts.movies.announce only. If the post is not accepted by the
moderator, he will probably inform you the best place to post the article.

If there is a comment that you want to make and want everybody
to know about it, you should choose the group that fits your topic
the best.
[If you think your post fits into two(or more) groups,
refer to Section one, Question 5 on how to use the
"follow-up" function when posting.]
[Please also refer to the standard Netiquette described in
Section One, Question 3.]

If there isn't one that fits your post at all, your post should
be discussed in rec.arts.movies.misc.

DO NOT CROSSPOST IT TO MULTIPLE GROUPS IN the rec.arts.movies.* HIERARCHY.
It is unnecessary as most people read more than one group. With
as many newsgroups as there are, nearly no postings belong in more
than one!

-------------------------------------

Subject: (1.5) What do I do when the thread has evolved into a topic that is
no longer appropriate for the newsgroup ?

When that happens, you should move the discussion to the most appropriate
newsgroup and maybe even change the subject line as well. There are several
ways to execute this transition :

1) Do one last response of this thread in the original newsgroup.
Somewhere in the post, mention that you think the discussion should
be moved to a new newsgroup.
Set the follow-up of the post to this new newsgroup.
(i.e. in header, put, Followup-To:new_newsgroup)

2) If only a few people are involved in this particular thread, email to
inform the several individuals about the change of the forum for future
discussion.

Better yet, do both (1) and (2).

, if the thread is "dying", don't bother to followup on it to
get it into another newsgroup. Your post will only keep the thread
alive a bit longer.

-------------------------------------

Subject: (1.6) My post fits into two groups ? Where should I post it to ?
[intelligent use of the "follow-up" function when posting]

This should rarely happen. If it does happen and that there is no way you
can identify one particular newsgroup, you may wish to do the following :

1) Decide which newsgroup is subscribed by the audience to whom
you want to target your post.
2) Then, send the post to both newsgroups.
Mention in which newsgroup you wish to discuss this thread
in the future.
Set all follow-ups of the post to the newsgroup in which you
want to discuss this thread.

For example :

Subject: Is Cruise any good in Vampire ?

Content : The poster could possibly be a fan of Tom Cruise
and would like to know if he was good in the
film _An_interview_with_the_Vampire_. The main
interest is Tom Cruise. IF the time of the post
happens to be when the film has just been released,
only people who have seen the film will be able to
answer that.

Solution : Post to rec.arts.movies.current-films
and rec.arts.movies.people

set follow-up to rec.arts.movies.people
(i.e. in header, put, Followup-To:rec.arts.movies.people)

NOTE : If the film involved in a similar example has been out
for quite sometime (i.e. if it is a past film), many
people would have seen the film and you would
only need to post it to rec.arts.movies.people.

The bottom line is :
Post it to the most appropriate newsgroup.
There is NO NEED to crosspost it to both groups. With
as many newsgroups as there are, nearly no postings belong in more
than one!

-------------------------------------

Subject: (1.7) What should I do if I don't have all the
groups in the hierarchy ?

If your site does not carry some of the subgroups in the hierarchy
that you wish to read, you can send email to the Usenet newsgroups
mainatainer at your site and request them to start carrying the
those subgroup(s) at your site. If you do not know how to contact
that person, you can try sending email to :
news@name_of_your_domain
usenet@name_of_your_domain
ne...@news.name_of_your_domain or other similar variations.

If all these fail, you can try sending a bug report from your
newsreader.

Good luck.

-------------------------------------

Subject: SECTION TWO : Specific guide for posting some common
rec.arts.movies.* topics

-------------------------------------

Subject: (2.1) Where should I ask which movies actor <X> starred in?

You shouldn't. Check The Internet Movie Database which can be accessed
via a World Wide Web "browser" :

< http://uk.imdb.com/ > (European users preferred)
< http://us.imdb.com/ > (USA/rest of world preferred)
< http://it.imdb.com/ > (Italian users preferred)
< http://ballet.cit.gu.edu.au/Movies/ > (Australian users *only*)

or via email to <mo...@ibmpcug.co.uk> with subject "HELP"

The "Movie Database: Frequently Asked Questions List" is posted to the
movie newsgroups regularly. Copies of the Movie Database FAQ may be
obtained by anonymous ftp to rtfm.mit.edu under
< ftp://rtfm.mit.edu/pub/usenet/news.answers/movies/movie-database-faq >,
or by sending e-mail to <mo...@ibmpcug.co.uk> with the subject "HELP FAQ"

If you are interested in adult video performers, there is a web based
searchable database at:
This database is maitained by Peter van Aarle, one of our moderators of
rec.arts.movies.erotica.
Dan "The Bio Keeper" Abend also maintains adult performer biographies at
< http://www.cris.com/~Abend/biokeeper >

-------------------------------------

Subject: (2.2) Where should I talk about Oscars, Cannes, Sundance or
other movie award ceremonies (such as adult-oriented ones)?

TYPE A: All movie award ceremonies except those that belong to type B.
TYPE B: Adult-oriented movie award ceremonies

TYPE A: All movie award ceremonies except those that belong to type B
^^^^^^
Predictions and comments on Oscars or other movie award ceremonies
are popular topics. These topics are mostly related to current
movies and actors/actresses/directors of the films invovled.
Depending on the subject of your post, the most appropriate groups
should be either rec.arts.movies.current-films or rec.arts.movies.people.
Choose one of these to post.

If you think your comments are related to both the actor(s) and
the film(s), you may wish to just send it to rec.arts.movies.current-films.
There is no need to crosspost to both groups as most readers
subscribe to more than one subgroup in the hierarchy. Please also
refer to the standard Netiquette described in Section One, Q3.

If you want to make general comments on the award show (like if the
Oscars show was entertaining) or talk about your opinion of the Academy
of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences in general, rec.arts.movies.misc
could be a better place.

Many readers also like to ask for various lists of past Oscar winners.
These posts should be directed to rec.arts.movies.lists+surveys.

The main idea is that, choose the most appropriate group to post
your article. If none of the newsgroups fit the article, the article
should probably belong to .misc. There is no need to crosspost
your article to several groups in the same hierarchy.

TYPE B: Adult-oriented movie award ceremonies
^^^^^^
The Adult Video News and gay Video Guide magazines each have their own
award ceremony. It would best be discussed these events in
rec.arts.movies.erotica .

-------------------------------------

Subject: (2.3) When I want to talk about actor <X> in movie <Y>, to where
should I post it ?

The decision of where to post this type of articles requires a
judgement call. The poster will have to decide the focus of this
thread.

* If your main interests are about the acting ability of actor <X>
as illustrated in movie <Y>, and possibly other movies that
actor <X> has been in as well, you should post it to rec.arts.
movie.people.

* If your main interests are about how actor <X> has influenced
the quality of movie <Y> and would like to discuss things
specific to movie <Y>, you should post it to rec.arts.movies.
current-films or .past-films.

* If you cannot decide on the focus of your post, maybe you
should just post it to one of the *-films group.

There is no need to crosspost. Most people subscribe to more
than one group so they will see your post. Please also refer
to the standard Netiquette described in Section One, Question 3.

-------------------------------------

Subject: (2.4) How do I decide if a film is current or past ?

As stated in the charters of the newsgroups, a film is
current if it is being shown in a first-run theater somewhere
in the world. Since it takes approximately 1 to 2 years for
films to travel around the world. The rule of thumb to use is :

"A film is still current if it is within 1.5 to 2 years after its
world premiere."

This would mean that Americans who have just rented a US film from
the "New Releases" section in a video store should post their comments
to rec.arts.movies.current-films because the film may still be
in-release in Europe and Asia.

-------------------------------------

Subject: (2.5) To which group should I post my personal N Best/Worst films
of the year ?

The newsgroup rec.arts.movies.lists+surveys is the group for this type
of threads. Rec.arts.movies.lists+surveys is a group where people post
surveys of movies/people over a variety of topics like : "best car chases?",
"The latest 50 movies I saw", "5 Fav Actors & Actresses", "Top 10 all-time
movies", "Name your most underrated movie".

However, if you are interested in making lists or surveys on adult-
oriented movies, they should probably be posted to rec.arts.movies.erotica.

-------------------------------------

Subject: (2.6) I just saw movie <Y> in a theater and I want to make
comments about this movie, so that's movie-going, right ?
Answer : NO

If you would like to make comments on films that you just saw in
first-run theaters, rec.arts.movies.current-films is the place for that.
That group is where people engage in dicussion and analysis of the plots,
contents, meanings of films that they have seen.

In rec.arts.movies.movie-going, you talk about the movie-going culture.
Why people sit at the back of the theaters, why people talk in theaters
and any "more casual" conversation related to movie-going but not specific
to any particular films.

------------------------------------

Subject: (2.7) Where do I ask what is a good "first-date" or "Nth-date"
movie ?

This is a survey of good "first-date" or "Nth-date" movies and
the best place is to post it to rec.arts.movies.lists+surveys.

But, if you want to talk about your movie-going experience during your first
date (or Nth date) you discuss that in rec.arts.movies.movie-going.

-------------------------------------

Subject: (2.8) Where do I advertise "Movie Posters For Sale" ?

At present, we do not have a rec.arts.movies.marketplace or
rec.arts.movies.collectibles. So this type of posts belongs to
rec.arts.movies.misc.

-------------------------------------

Subject: (2.9) I want to ask about how the special effects of a film was
produced. Should I post it to .tech or .production ?

Threads on special effects of films should be posted to .tech.
This is where the technical aspects of movies are being discussed.
In rec.arts.movies.production, the emphasis is on how to get a
film produced, from getting contracts to finding site locations.
Dicussions are generally not about any specific films.

-------------------------------------

Subject: (2.10) What are some of the topics being discussed in .misc ?

Newsgroup rec.arts.movies.misc is the catch-all group of the hierarchy.
This doesn't mean that things there are unimportant, they just cannot
be classified to any specific subjects at this time. You may want to
subscribe to it in case something of your interest is posted there.
Possible topics include :

"Movie posters for sale"
"Who's in the new Columbia logo?"
"Where can I ftp scripts from?"
"RFD: rec.arts.movies.people split"
"Best WWW site for movies?"
"CD-ROM Movie Database 'Cinemania' - any good?"
"What is a 'Cult-movie' anyway?"
"Starting an Arts Film Series"
"Movie Database Programs for MS-DOS/Windows"
"Latin coversation in Tombstone"
"Rare & Cult Videos *Updated*"
"Cinema Indonesia in Chicago"
"Where can I find the script for Blade Runner ?"
"E-mail zines list update"
"Info on US film distribution needed"
"What do you know about 70's Culture???"
"Movie Posters FS"
"FS:Laser Discs for Sale "Updated"10-11-95"

If you think your thread belongs in .misc, then it automatically
means that it doesn't belong in anywhere else. So, there is no need
to crosspost a misc-post to someother groups.

Similarly, threads that belong to elsewhere need not be crossposted
to .misc either.

Please remember to minimize bandwidth.

-----------------------------------

Subject: (2.11) Where should I compare films of all times ?

Rec.arts.movies.lists+surveys is the newsgroup that is devoted to doing
surveys of this kind.

Eventhough the charter of rec.arts.movies.past-films encompasses
many films that have not been released in recent time, it is intended
for the discussion of the contents plots and meaings of individual
films. Extensive comparison of _many_ films in threads like "your
most under/overrated film" should be discussed in rec.arts.movies
.lists+surveys.

-----------------------------------

Subject: (2.12) Where do I ask about availability of movies
on video and questions specific to the video versions
of movies ?

Newsgroup rec.video.releases is devoted to such topics.
This group covers availability of movies on video and questions
specific to the video versions of movies. This is the place to
ask "When is Pulp Fiction coming out on video?", "Is Evil Dead
available on LaserDisc?", or "Is there a letterboxed transfer
of Phantom of The Paradise around anywhere?"

Note that availability of hardcore films (such as those produced by
Wet Video, Venus 99 or Evil Angel) should be brought up in
rec.arts.movies.erotica. Mainstream erotic movies (for example:
Henry & June, Animal Instincts, etc.) should be brought up
in rec.video.releases.

The charter of rec.video.releases is limited to topics on video
releases, so please don't post _general_ threads about movies,
regardless of age.

-----------------------------------

Subject: (2.13) Where do movie quote quizzes, trivia contests,
etc., belong?

These topics are within the domain of lists and surveys so you should
post them to rec.arts.movies.lists+surveys.

-----------------------------------

Subject: (2.14) Where does discussion of the rec.arts.movies.* heirarchy
itself belong, such as comments/debate on any of the topics
in this FAQ, or discussion of splits or new newsgroups within
the hierarchy ?

Issues related to the organization of the rec.arts.movies.* hierarchy,
or questions/comments of this FAQ (e.g. posting frequency, contents,
definitions of charters, etc. ) should be discussed in
rec.arts.movies.misc. The follow-up of this FAQ has been set to
rec.arts.movies.misc.

Initiation of further organization in the rec.arts.movies.* hierarhcy
(splitting of a rec.arts.movies.* groups or creation of new subgroups)
should be discussed in the affect newsgroup(s) and in
rec.arts.movies.misc as well. If you are interested
in such activity, please also refer to SECTION FIVE of this FAQ.

-----------------------------------

Subject: SECTION THREE : Other movie-related resources outside the Usenet
arena

-------------------------------------

Subject: (3.1) Where are some of the movie-related WWW sites ?

As new movie-related WWW sites are created every minute, a complete
list of all WWW sites that have appeared in the newsgroups cannot
be provided here. The best place to start is probably the
list of alternative WWW access from the Internet Movie Database at :

For more info on the Internet Movie Database, refer to (2.1) of this
FAQ.

Also, if you are interested in adult-oriented movies, the adult
movie web site maintained by Dan Abend at
< http://www.cris.com/~abend/biokeeper > should provide a good
starting point. There is also another good site maintained by
Jeff Knapp at < http://w3.gti.net/director/links >.

--------------------------------------

Subject: (3.2) What movie mailing-lists are there?

A collection of movie related mailing lists can be viewed from
a WWW browser at :

----------------------------------------

Subject: SECTION FOUR : Hints on how to present your article

Here are some hints to help you to make your post more attractive :

1. While doing a follow-up on a post, you may want to edit the content of
the pervious post. There is no need to quote ALL of the content of
ALL previous messages in a thread when creating a short reply. Doing
so will force readers to scroll through about two pages of the same
text quoted over and over again in subsequent replies, which often
include only 1 or 2 lines of new comment. For those that have the
capability, please try to quote just the passages to which you are
responding, not the entire long message or thread.

2. Some newsreaders are limited to 80 columns. So, if someone types
very lone lines (132 to 255 characters), readers may have to press
End/Home or scroll horizontally to read each line. If your software
doesn't word-wrap when you type, you could help us out by putting a
carriage return before the 80th character.

3. Some people put the name of the newsgroup to which they are posting
in the subject line. This could be annoying since readers cannot tell
what is the content of that post. Please try to use a meaningful
subject line that describes the content of your post.

-----------------------------------

Subject: SECTION FIVE: Further reorganization of the rec.arts.movies.*
hierarchy ?

(5.1) When is the earliest day a subsequent split can be considered ?

The earliest subsequent split of newsgroups in the rec.arts.movies.*
hierarchy is Dec, 1995.

(5.2) In what newsgroups should the initiation of such proposals be
discussed ?

When there are demonstrated needs of additional newsgroups or
further divisions in rec.arts.movies.*, interested individuals should
discuss/debate such activities in the affected subgroups within the
rec.arts.movies.* and to rec.arts.movies.misc as well to
generate discussions among readers.

Examples :

Splitting an existing subgroup :

If you are interested in further division of rec.arts.movies.people
into rec.arts.movies.people.actors and rec.arts.movies.people.directors,
you should post your threads to rec.arts.movies.misc and
rec.arts.movies.people.

If you are interested in creation of forums for art films or
independent films within the hierarchy, you should post your
threads to rec.arts.movies.misc, rec.arts.movies.current-films and
rec.arts.movies.past-films.

Creation of new subgroups :

If you are interested in creation of rec.arts.movies.marketplace, etc,
you should post your thread to rec.arts.movies.misc only.

Once a feasible and acceptable proposal for further reorganization
has been worked out among readers, you should then proceed to
take the official steps involved in the creation of Usenet newsgroups.
This will involve moving the discussion to news.groups. Please
read (5.3) for further info.

(5.3) Where can I obtain more info on creation of Usenet newsgroups ?

Individuals who wish to propose changes in the hierarchy
should read the official Usenet newsgroup creation guidelines :

"How to Create a New Usenet Newsgroup" at :
< ftp://rtfm.mit.edu/pub/usenet/news.answers/creating-newsgroups/part1 >

or at :

Guidelines for Usenet group creation
