At CttM 2003, held in Papendal, The Netherlands May 19th and 20th GrafXSoft
gave some valuable insight in what will be Visual Objects 2.7. Robert van
der Hulst, member of the development team presented a 90 minute session
about the new version, where things are going and gave a sneak preview into
the near future as far as Visual Objects is concerned.

The usual disclaimer should be applied, GrafX could decide to change spec's
or implement things differently according to their needs.

Very good.
Especialy because of this statment: The 3.0 version will facilitate two
development platforms: Windows 32-bit .EXE's and Microsoft .NET applications
or components.
But I found this article on DevCon CD disk VOWHITE.DOC where is word about
java where talk about:
"Some time should be spent researching the possibility of compiling
CA-Visual Objects code directly into a JAVA p-code stream. The ability for
the CA-Visual Objects compiler to produce Java p-code would directly address
the lack of multi-platform support in CA-Visual Objects."

Why java? Mybe because I read this article:
http://java.about.com/cs/technologies/a/matrix_reloaded.htm

any comments?

Hi Ed,

This seems good! Is there a forecast on how much the version updating will
co$t? Honestly, I believe the people that are still in the old version (my
case) will prefer to go directly to the new version.

Hai,

I do not know much about marketing stuff, but I can imagine that:
going from 2.5b3 to 2.6 to 2.7 will be cheaper than going from 2.5b3 to
2.7...
going from 2.0 to 2.6 to 2.7 will be cheaper than going from 2.0 to 2.7...
I think VO 2.7 will always be cheaper than a prof Delphi licence!
But hey.. I am not Brian.....

<My Opinion>
When you are a prof VO-developer, this is the change to support your
moneymaker.. And buy 2.6!
I can not believe there are people still using 2.0...... (or even 1.0)...
2.6 is so much improved compared to those!
</My Opinion>

I have to agree with Marc. I think when all the shops that actually use VO
buy a licence for every developer that's using it VO development would move
faster <g>. Nevertheless VO is cheap compared to some other options.

Brian indicated in Germany and England pricing would stay in-line with what
we are used to paying for VO, moving from 2.5b3 to 2.7 will atleast be as
much as going 2.5b3 > 2.6 > 2.7.

<MyOpnion>
If you ask me people that didn't go to 2.6 should pay double, but that's
just me ;-) (I am a distributor you know, it would be great to earn some
money in exchange for all the hours I spend Alpha testing).
</MyOpnion>

<g>Marc, maybe we should write an XML-schema for NG message NGML </g>

I'm no marketing guru, but I don't think punishing VO developers who didn't
upgrade by charging them double is a great option. There are many upgrade
schemes out there, but this is usually not one of them. There may be many
reasons why developers didn't upgrade other than just not wanting to support
for Grafx. I think "encouraging" developers to upgrade is a better approach
what ever version they are currently using.

Jamie,

On the other hand, setting a precedent that skipping versions is cheaper than
staying current, or punishing VO supporters who do upgrade each time, is not
necessarily a smart tactic either. In any case, sales of 2.6 have already funded
development of 2.7 according to Brian, so anything from now on helps fund 3.0 -
pretty sweet!

Halfway is about as far as you can get unless you go the route that Borland did.
Of course VO1 was even less than half-way because even though the horrible GUI
classes were theoretically multi-platform, nothing else was.

But it wouldn't be punishing those who buy every upgrade, since they are
getting the use of the upgrade. Those who skip aren't. Disclaimer: I'm
biased since I didn't upgrade to 2.6 <g>. If I get penalized to much I
probably won't upgrade to 2.7 either. My new work is mostly in C# .Net. My
2.5 stuff is working okay for now and I can't see a real pressing need to
upgrade other than to support VO.

I bought the 2.6 upgrade but have never used it. I have no compelling
reason to move to 2.6 or above. All my new work is in C#. I still try to
keep in touch with VO but only for supporting a legacy app. VO 2.5b-3 works
for me and my users "as is". I've already worked around the VO 2.5b-3 bugs
and I am sure as *(..U!!! not going to do that again with another upgrade.
Thanks but no thanks.

Jamie,

I love C# too (and wish VO had some of those language features), but I still
make most of my money from VO apps at the moment, so I'm very interested in the
continuing work Brian's team is doing. I intend to continue to purchase upgrades
to VO as long as I have users running VO apps - I feel I owe it to them.

Just do it - try a clean import, touching after each lib, and import
them IN ORDER: I used to have this with VO1 sometimes.

Adriano sorted all our stuff into a nice logical order, which was
great.
To get over the obvious order problem, we renames everything including
bBrowser, (GridPro before) and ReportPro. bBrowser is now
12a_bDefines, etc - sorry Joachim - but it really does make life
easier.
Makes upgrading libraries a pain in the neck...

Oh we have done that many times (and also equivalents,
we use the SDK to build up from prgs and some other custom bits).
The problem seems to be that one of our DLLs GPFs as soon as we
call any function or method in it (yet it includes the error handler
that is used to report the problem).

i do not assume.

i know:
VO:
- has no native support for handling events in Automation-Servers.
- documentation ignores(!) the existence of Events in Automation-Servers

COMSDK (the 3rd-party-solution):
- is a difficult solution with much hand-coding
- has documentation that is out-of-sync with the code
- has no updates available online

-

Other people are aware o this limitations / weaknesses.

what's up with the hostile attitude. I also know some things - like for

If you're here to cause shit and be an asshole - no thanks - we get plenty

The smart-ass attacks to legitimate replies with genuine intent do little

However, you are correct that each has their own style, and you are free to

Is a work in progress, completely written in VO and will be updated for 2.7,
At least you are in-topic.

Devcon Attendees already have a new version that support creating COMServers with events.
I understand.

'Devcon Attendees' get an updated new version.

'Non Devecon Attendees' have to wait until the release of VO 2.7

I agree i's a lot of coding, but hey, we're coders :-) and we love it.
Some coders love 'coding'.

Some coders love IDE's, OOD, usability, reusability, concentrating on the creative part of programming.
If you don't like the COMSDK, well that's your bad.
If you don't like criticism, well that's your bad.

You loose control.

This is a public forum, please take care of your vocabulary.

Thank you in advance.

In which case you get a system error.

Add to that that some other coders also love time-to-market, window-of-opportunity, cost control, return rate over investment, profits, healthy business...

Usenet,

VO does have no built in support for COM events. But, I did not buy VO for it's built in COM. I bought it because it is very stable, and I like the class syntax of the compiler. I gave you 2 specific examples of where you could find event handling. I have not personally used COMSDK yet. I started writting COM objects before VO supported COM at all. I used and still use a prodct called VOCOM.  I know the authors of VOCOM, COMSDK, and VO2ADO. All are very good in the support category!

I do use VO2ADO. The pro version includes source. All version support events.

Regards,

Willie

Pardon me for stating the obvious, but why not just move errorsys to the app
then in case it's trying to tell you something?

Thank you for confirming my initial post.

You(!). I'm happy you(!) found your solution.

I will ask for VOCOM in a new thread.

I can talk only for the COMSDK.

It has new versions, which are still unpublished.

There is simply no website where a user can see what bugfixes are available.

That is definitely not "very good" in the support category!

ok.
