LyX-0.10.7 has been uploaded to sunsite. It is also available from
ftp://ftp.via.ecp.fr/pub/lyx and from my home page:
http://www.lehigh.edu/~dlj0/LyriX.html

LyX is a WYSIWYG front-end to LaTeX. It is used much like a
word-processor, but LaTeX produces the final document. Figures, tables,
mathematical formulas, fonts, headers, etc., are all drawn on-screen
essentially as they appear on the final document. Figures (postscript)
are placed in the document using a simple menu, as are tables. General
text formatting is accomplished by "high-level" menu choices that
automatically set fonts, indentation, spacing, etc., according to
general LaTeX rules, and display (essentially) these settings on the
screen. Direct choices of fonts, etc., are of course available also.
You have a choice, for mathematical formulas, of typing the standard
LaTeX strings in "math mode", or choosing from menus of (most) symbols.
Typing the strings in math-mode is interpreted on-the-fly, and WYSIWYG
symbols are drawn as each string is typed. So, in math-mode (entered
via a menu or a keyboard macro), if you type "\alpha ", as you type that
space on the end, the Greek letter alpha will appear.

The document will not print precisely as it appears on the screen, since
LaTeX formats the document, making line and page breaks, etc, as it
processes the document. The screen appearance is an approximation of
the final document, which helps in editing -- especially for
mathematical formulas, which are much faster in LyX, and which result in
far fewer errors since LyX controls the LaTeX commands.

None of the power of LaTeX is lost, since you can embed any LaTeX
command within a LyX document.

New in this release: Improved mathed, improved cut&paste (now supports
pasting of selected text/formaulas using Button-2), background color
support, improved configure script, and many, many bugfixes.

This is a public beta release. We believe that this version will prove
to be stable and usable for real work. LyX is not yet "done", though;
many features need still to be added. Please consider joining the
development effort if you feel you can help.

>From the *.lsm file:
