Problem with editing text.

annoying. Whenever I try to add or edit text, my cursor "eats" the
text. For example:
this that
Suppose I want to insert the word "and" in between the "this that".
Instead of coming out:
this and that
It will look like:
this andt
The text doesn't scroll forward to make room for the new text.
Instead, the old text is deleted and replaced with the new text. The
only way I can counteract this is by editing my text on a separate
line and then backspacing it to the correct place. Needless to say,
this is time consuming and very frustrating.
Does anyone have any idea why it's doing this, or what I can do to
correct the problem? Forgive me if this is an FAQ; I haven't been
reading this group for over a month. Thanks in advance.

It is happening because you have pressed the Ins(ert) key. Press it
again. Its state is shown in the rightmost box in the Status bar if
you have that enabled in Options | Display preferences | Main window.

It's a bug in Agent. Sometimes it toggles between INS & OVR without
you ever pressing the Insert key. Obviously you just need to press the
key to toggle back.

I think, before you blame it on a bug, that you would have to be
absolutely certain that the Insert key was not being operated
inadvertently. It is adjacent to the Backspace key on most keyboards,
and the Backspace key is an oft used key when entering text, so the
chance of hitting the Ins key by mistake is a fair possibility.

Er, no.
It has existed in all versions since the beginning.

My guess is a keyboard driver issue. The same thing happens in other
editors on my system and seems to require that a specific sequence of
keys be pressed at a high typing rate.
