i got an indigo2 which i think has irix on it.. i try booting it up
with a vga adapter and a vga monitor but it doesnt work. the machine
plays a little tune when i boots, so i guess its working right?
anyway, i would like to run it headless for now.. i usually use
hyperterminal(i know.. :/) or whatever to access my suns, but it uses
9pin serial.. and the indigo only has the 25pin parallel.. the only
other machine i could use as a terminal is a linux box.. ive heard
that its not possible to use 25pin to 25pin with linux..

what do i need to access the indigo via console? (hardware wise)

heres what i have: a 25 to 25 pin cable i got from staples.. said it
was for pc to pc file transfer.., regular 9pin serial cable, a 9pin
serial to 25pin came from some old external modem ( could this be of
use?)

anyone have ANY suggestions about what i need to get this thing
running?
thanks alot.

If you want to run a console with Linux (using minicom) you will need a 25
pin to 25 pin null modem cable (or atleast a Null modem gender bender with a
standard serial cable). Other wise you can get the correct 13w3 to svga
adapter for your monitor off ebay. The SGI video cards I believe sync on
green which is why you have to be careful about which adapter you purchase.
I have used some adapters in the past that stated they would work on either
Sun and/or SGI machine but in fact only work on Sun machines (which I
believe sync on red). Regardless, your best bet is to get an SGI monitor
(the quality is amazing) or get an adapter from one of the companies on ebay
that promise it will work. Also though, you need to make sure your monitor
is a multisync as some older vga monitors will not work no matter what.

Again, if you want to do console, you need a null modem cable or gender
bender.

Good luck,

WTF does Linux have to do with anything?

If you want to run a console on an Indigo 2 (as the original poster
stated), you will need a "Mac high speed modem cable", or MiniDIN-8
to DB(9,25 - whatever is on the back of your Peecee for serial port).

Sync on red? Somebody was yankin' your chain when they told you that.

Sorry, Greg is right, my bad. Forgot about the miniDIN connection on the
back. The instructions I gave originally work on Sun boxes, again my
mistake, I messed up.

As for the Linux thing, the original poster wanted to use his Linux box as
the console, so I was letting him know that minicom would work just fine for
what he was wanting to do (or he could also use hyperterminal, again like he
stated).

So which color does a Sun and/or and SGI Sync on? I have always wanted to
know but could never find the answer.

Green.

Is it both Sun and SGI on green or just SGI? I have always been curious
since I have both an SGI monitor and a Sun monitor (both made by sony, both
look identical except for the case cover coloring) but the Sun monitor does
not work on my SGIs and my SGI monitor does not work on my Sun machines.

Thanks

Their 13W3 standards differ, the pin-outs aren't the same:

http://www-viz.tamu.edu/pub/sgi/hardware/monitor/13W3.pinout
http://www.monitorworld.com/Cables/video_standards.html

There are several different 'flavors' of 13W3; I guess no one ever agreed on
a industry standard.

Several people have reported that breaking off the middle 10 pins in their
13W3->HD15 converter allows their VGA multi-sync monitors to work win SGIs.

The SGI mixes the sync signals with the green signal. On a SUN, the vertical
and horizontal signals are mixed into a composite sync signal which uses a
fourth wire.

Hi,

you won´t be able to profit from Indigo´s superb graphics hardware
unless your vga monitor works on sgi 13W3 output! Do yourself a favor
and get an appropriate SGI13W3-to-VGA adaptor, They are about 30$ and
well worth the money (presumed the vga monitor is a *good* one). Try
UltraSpec Cables or do a google search. Don´t buy any SUN13W3-to-VGA
adaptors - they will *not* work with your Indigo2. What about a SGI
monitor from ebay? The Sony GDM20D11 is sold pretty often and not very
expensive. And there are some tricks to use it with a pee-cee, too! Via
modification of the monitor (all you need is built in already) or usage
of an external adaptor.

Actually, Indigo2 and Indy (at least) output composite and separate sync
as well.

I've gotten Sun adapters (which expect composite sync on pin 3) to work
with Indy and Indigo2 (which output composite sync on pin 5), simply by
mashing down pin 3 and 4 next to pin 5 and blobbing some solder in there
to connect them. This effectively takes the composite output from an SGI
and routes it to the pin a Sun adapter is expecting it on. The only
problem you will have is the monitor ID pins, so you'll need to consult a
chart to figure out which ones to clip and which to leave in; though I've
found that once IRIX is booted, it seems to ignore the monitor ID and uses
whatever resolution/refresh it was set for.

I also have an SGI adapter which is wired only for H/V separate sync, and
it works fine too.

YMMV

Nope. The two mini-din 8 pin right alongside kb/mouse are MAC-style
serial ports. See man serial on techpubs.sgi.com for pinouts.

The ancillary pins don't have the same pinout for Sun and SGI, and some Sun
monitors even expect H- and V-sync on some of these (selected according to
the Sun pinout ;) ) and do not support sync-on-green.
