Currently being enrolled in a course at school that utilizes FPGA's (for CPU
design) and seeing the topic come up now and then in threads I got to
wondering how many RGVACer's are playing with these. The recent post about
the pac board was pretty cool. There is also somebody trying to get the
atari 2600 coded as well. These would be great for replacing things like the
pesky mathbox boards in tempest, battlezone, and others as well as outright
replace the cursed pole position boards (I mention PP because I just sold
one to a relative and am dreading the day it dies). Just curious.

I'm currently involved with the C=1 project, http://c64upgra.de/c-one/
which is a reconfigurable computer. The default mode is a C64 compat-
ible one, but the machine just boots the FPGA from an IDE device at
power on, so it could theoretically be pretty much anything. It has a
CPU slot too, if you don't feel like implementing your own CPU core or
using the onboard 65816.

As the board comes with VGA and PS/2 ports, all you need is a J-PAC
interface and hey presto, instant arcade dev board :)

Isn't that the beauty of open source code (smirk) ??
Actually, I am lucky enough to be able to do this as a hobby, and I fully
understand Jeri's wish to keep her hard work to herself and make some cash
out of it. I hope to sell dedicated arcade fpga cards myself one day ..

cheers,

/MikeJ

Yeah I'm not exactly sure what source will be released and what won't,
but it sounds like she expects people to do their own custom mods to
the board, and that won't be possible without at least parts of it
being available. But you still have full control over what goes into
the 1k100 - anything's possible... :)

Speaking of which -- would it be hard to program the C1 board with the
pacman core?

As far as I understand the second Altera is for general use and not
necessary for running the machine, so all she need to document is the pinout
and memory locations where it can be harassed.
As long as you can provide an appropriate clock to the core (6mhz ish if you
want the game to play at the original speed - too hard for me) and some
buttons / screen i/f it will be fine. The only snag is there is some xilinx
specific stuff in my code still, but that wouldn't be a problem - I will
make it more generic one day.

b.t.w just out of curiosity are you in Stockholm ? drop me a mail.

Cheers,
MikeJ

Why did you do this to me?? I would have been just fine without seeing this
link. This is way too cool. Now I have to try it.

Chris
