I've lost my iTunes library!

Last night, I was removing a DVD when I suddenly found myself back at
the login screen. I thought it was odd, but it was late, so I just left
it there and went to bed.

This morning when I got up I logged in and started up iTunes, which came
up as if it had been freshly installed: no music library, and the window
was in a size and location I've never had it.

The actual music _files_ appear to be still there, it just seems that
iTunes has lost its knowledge of them. Is there a way to have iTunes
scan and rebuild this information without having to force it to
re-import all of the files? If not, how should I proceed?

Sure. First, look in the trash to see if there's an iTunes Music
Library file there, or go to Finder and File>Find (or command-F) enter
iTunes Music Library (using "name is") and see if there's another
one---the original one---moved somewhere else on your drive. If it's
around, you're in luck! Simply remove the "new" version (temporarily to
the desktop and later to the trash) and replace it with the "old"
version. Launch iTunes and all should be back to normal.

OR, from the iTunes Help menu comes this info:

"If you throw away the iTunes Music Library file, your songs will no
longer show in your library even though the song files are still in the
iTunes Music folder.

To make your songs appear in the library again:

* Drag your iTunes Music folder (by default, located inside the
iTunes folder in your Music folder) to your library in the Source list."
(They mean, to the open window where the songs used to appear)

"You will see the songs in your library again, but you won't see any of
your original playlists (playlist information is stored in the iTunes
Music Library file)."

Hope that helps.

There's a preference, under 'Advanced,' for directing iTunes to the old
library.

Duh. I never thought to look there, because it didn't occur to me that
they would document a situation like this. Thanks! iTunes is
rebuilding the source list as I type.

Playlists are no big deal, I only use a couple anyway and can easily
rebuild those.

Again, thanks, that seems to have done it.
